Actually the on line images are not included in the basic subscription. They cost extra - which about doubles the basic membership. Some are indexed, and others are not. I have spent hours looking through page after page, and getting tired before I found my ancestor, so just giving up. But, those that are indexed are much easier to access. I don't have DSL, and they are all Very slow to load. Helen Benter

    1. [PABUCKS-L] ancestry.com info
    2. Hodgin
    3. I just got back in town and saw that there is interest in how I use the census and make prints. Remember, I do have DSL which makes everything quicker, but here is how you do it with any access. You can use the "Search Your Ancestors Now" block on the ancestry.com home page. Enter the individual you are looking for, it should give you census records matches. Click on that area and it tells you the township, page, etc. where possible hits are. If you don't have access to other indexes, this might be your best best. Go to the specific census section. You will need to download the Plug-In (information is on the far left). I don't know if you can get it on a trial membership, but it is available for free if you are a member. Once you get to the township you need (and perhaps the page number if you know that), you click on VIEW FULL SCREEN. That will enlarge the page (although not enough for those of us with less-than-perfect vision). If you need to enlarge the section further, click on the icon in the upper left hand corner of the census screen that shows a circle with a + in it. Put your cursor on the section you want to see and click - the section will enlarge; click again and it will magnify more. Of course, then you will want to see other parts of the page so then you go back to the icons in the upper left hand corner of the census screen (3 to the right of the +), look for a picture of a hand. Click on the hand. Then go back to the census screen. Click on the screen, move your cursor around to wherever you need to see. This is a great help. When you want to print, you just go back to the icon section again (2 to the right of the hand) look for a page. Click and it will give you many options, choose print image. There you have it! Hope this is helpful.

    3. Good Morning The update mailing list for the county had to be stopped as it seems a spammer got in the pa-roots site where the coordinator of the Lehigh Co Pa site was hosting it for me. They sent out a bunch of spam mail to her update list. But I will be looking for another site to try to host it. Rootsweb where I have the Bucks Site does not let you use cgi script on it. I know I can set one up at yahoo but the problem is you have to register to subscribe to it. So will keep looking. Until I can get something different I guess I'll put the updates on the Bucks County Mailing his. I hate it where someone had to screw things up for others. Judy ===== Bucks Co. 3. The following is taken from a book by Nora Belle Thompson about her GF Atwood Thompson. If anyone can help me find info on this CHARLES THOMPSON, I would be in your debt. "......Charles Thompson a shipwright of Gloucester County NJ moved to Bucks County Pa. where on April 1, 1836 he bought land from Bernard and Mahlon K. Taylor. Charles and Rebecca Thompson sold land to William C. Coates on April 16, 1855 This establishes the fact that a wife Rebecca was in Bristol with him! It is certain that the children whose names we know were by this wife nee Rebecca Reeves because of the dates we have established and because of the recurrence of the names Reeve and Rebecca. According to Mary Hillborn, nee Burke, a granddaughter who lived in the same house as Charles Thompson in his later years he had extensive land holdings in Bristol. Doron Green in THE HISTORY OF BRISTOL BOROUGH and Mary Hillborn did not agree always as to where Charles Thompson lived. Mrs. Hillborn stated that her grandfather built a row of Brickhouses. He owned or lived in what came to be known as the Iredell House a small apartment building when I saw it. Mrs. Thompson died in the Dorrance Street House. Both agreed that Charles Thompson owned a shipyard on Adams Hollow Creek. The property extended to the "low water mark of river Delaware" It had been established in 1785 and had paased through several owners before Charles Thompson acquired it!""" It goes on to say that he lived to be 100 and on his gravestone , it has all three of his wives on it!! 3. Barbara, I've just installed my updated Brother's Keeper software and am having trouble getting my text files added. But this source is still listed where I can reach for Abner's marriage info :( AGLL V237-6 Microfilm - Bucks Co. Intelligencer Vol III 1832-1834 I pulled the document and only states: Oct. 20: Abner Heaton to Miss Elizabeth Heaton, both of Lower Makefield Twp. (above and below are other marriages, some mentioning "At Friend's Meetinghouse", or "by Rev. Nassau", etc.. Abner's marriage didn't include such. But I remember a Allen Lippincott, Esq. in another source who married other Heatons - Mrs. Deborah Heaton, & Amos Heaton to Sarah Heaton. Amos was a brother-in-law to Abner and they and their families traveled together and settled in OH 1838 where they stayed until their deaths. No idea where Esq. LIppincott's office was located in Bucks Co., PA. Abner's Heaton's children in birth order were Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Lucy, Samuel H., Amanda M., John Cornelius, and Jane M. Catherines!!! That name runs in the Heaton families around Bucks and Philly. Can't sort them out. Just look at this alphabetical list of Heatons and the number of Catherines: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/6664/names3.htm#HEATON There is an interesting Catherine Heaton 22 July 1802, Bucks Co., PA Will Book 6, pg. 418 #3079 where she mentions her sons, William Adare, Charles; and daughters, Mary, Sarah, Rebecca. And a 1787 will of Jos. McIlvaine and his natural son born of Catherine Swan, now Catherine Heaton. Phila Wills Bk5, pg. 8. list Catherine Heaton's will #3079 dtd. 1802 of Bristol Boro; pg. 3, her lott of land bounded by Wood, Mulberry, and Pond and the Methodist Lott. Additional 10 entries of Grantor Index and land, & Dower Release. Is she your ancestor? Julia At 08:05 PM 10/29/01 -0500, you wrote: > >>>> married by a JP in Lower Makefield Twp. 3. Hi Jack, Still trying to find a documented link to my "one" branch of Heatons. Have the other documented back to the late 1500s in Lanc. Co., England. Heatons are like Smiths, just too many. Not all the Heatons of Bucks Co., PA are descended from that Robert. My 3rd great grandfather, Abner Heaton married in Lower Makefield Twp., Bucks Co., PA where the infamous Robert Heaton lived. But the name Robert does not run in my Heaton line. The names Joseph, George, & Samuel seem to repeat as the early Jonathan Heaton line of Philadelphia. I have a large data base of Heatons, but very little info on the Philly Heatons. But Robert seems to take importance in eastern PA histories. Going to have to make time and visit the area - when I get my last one out of the nest and Hubby retires. Thanks for the message. Have a good week. Julia A. 3. Hi family researchers, Don't forget to visit the US Gen Web's Free On-Line Census and see if any of your counties are included in the growing list: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/cen_img.htm Remember the Gen Web original plan was to make genealogy sources free and easily available. I find it questionable as to why this important site is often overlooked and forgotten on genealogy sites - no doubt due the fact that Ancestry.com owns Rootsweb & charges for the same service. And if you belong with a local genealogy society, encourage them to donate some of their treasury to this worthy cause rather than publishing books. This avenue is less expensive and helps a wider area of researchers. And those broadband Internet connections load these census images immediately. Julia

    2. I have memberships in both Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com and like them both. Each has unique collections and services that I access constantly -- at least on a daily basis. However, I do like the Ancestry.com census records much, much better. Much faster to load, easier to scan page by page for an entire township or by name in the index. OTOH, Ancestry.com now offers "wildcard" searching, which you cannot do at Genealogy.com. However .... it is now necessary because of money constraints for me to cancel both memberships. I had no problem getting through to both of the 800 numbers during regular business hours. And they were both very courteous, understanding and helpful. One even advised me to call back on a certain day to cancel because, he said, I had already paid for the month, and he wanted me to get full use of it before I have to cancel. Both of these companies still have extensive free services available to me. Rootsweb, the sponsors of these wonderful mailing lists, is the best, but Genealogy.com's family forums come close. Also, the L.D.S. site, Familysearch.org has some other unique things that are very helpful. Priscilla

    3. I have belonged to Ancestry.com for at least a couple years now. Perhaps it is that I'm not a professional, but I really like the service. While the census options were slow previously, I have just bought into a dsl service (I'm an internet junky so it is well worth the cost), and the census is easy to access, scan, and print. I don't have the time to go to libraries across the country so this is an absolutely necessary service. I also subscribe to genealogy.com and it has many collections; however, I still like ancestry.com the best. > > > ==== PABUCKS Mailing List ==== > Contact Listowner ar judjack@rocketmail.com > Bucks Co Surnames http://www.rootsweb.com/~pabucks/surnamepageA.html > List Rules http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~myplace/mailing.html > Bucks Co. 3. Felt I had to add my comments though I have no interest in Ancesty except that I have been a subscriber for a couple of years. First of all- Ancestry has added all those census sheets in the past year (Little more- little less). They are completing indexes of each year as fast as they can. The 1860 census is really new and will be indexed eventually. I also hate how slowly the pages load but tried it on a better computer at work and found that it is mostly my computer that is the problem- and the type of download system and amount of memory I have available. I now know to click on a page- go read some email or do some editing on my FTM files, etc. Then go back to the page. To copy a whole page- I click on print and then "print Full page". If that doesn't work for you- try saving the page and then printing from another program. You can enlarge it on a scanner program, etc. to fill the whole page. I use my MGI Photo to enlarge sections that are hard to read. Ancestry's prices are reasonable compared to Genealogy.com which provides census access to only the 1900 for more than ancestry charges for all they have available. Lastly- I find it impossible to get to a Mormon library or to travel to California, New Mexico, Massachusetts, etc. to look at census records. The expense and time would be out of reach for me. Ancestry allows me to see and print copies of the originals much cheaper and at my own speed without worrying that my time at the microfilm reader is over, the microfilm printer won't work, etc. That's my opinion- for what it's worth : ) I guess everyone should just try for themselves. (I do agree that their customer service could be improved but I have worse problems with Genealogy.com which tells me I can write for help and get a response in 5 days. After a month, I'm still waiting for a response.) Lots of luck, Donna

    3. I have taken the Ancestry membership for one yr mainly to look up Census records. Yes it is not the same as rolling a microfilm and it would be greatly improved if they would get some indexes up to use. It has been a help to read the ancestry newsletters. There was a suggestion to view them in detail mode instead of browse mode. It does improve the time to load the images. Hope this helps. I have so much to look up in Bucks county, I will never get them all done in one year at the speed these things load.

    3. Nancy, I have been on this same trial for 4 out of the 7 days now. I should tell you that I will cancel tomorrow before they start charging me. First off, they have no indexing available for any of the more valuable censuses I was mainly interested in 1860). Second, the process of changing from one image page to the next is EXTREMELY slow, so if you want to scan all pages for a particular township or ward, you are in for hours in front of the computer. And, third, printing of a page portion to fill a standard size printer sheet has so far eluded me. I'm not yet saying it's impossible, but the method certainly isn't obvious; so far I've only gotten half of my printer page filled. Good luck.
