    3. Thank you so much! I didn't know whether or not Mr. Brink had anything to do with Richard Thomas, the book just says the names of people who applied for tavern licenses from Warrington Township. So they were both from Warrington, and both just happened to apply. OK, works for me. http://books.google.co<http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC01727483&id=bwtNS1C8ljwC&pg=PA836&lpg=PA836&dq=%2522richard+thomas%2522+bucks> m/books?vid=OCLC01727483&id=bwtN<http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC01727483&id=bwtNS1C8ljwC&pg=PA836&lpg=PA836&dq=%2522richard+thomas%2522+bucks> S1C8ljwC&pg=PA836&lpg=PA836&dq=%22<http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC01727483&id=bwtNS1C8ljwC&pg=PA836&lpg=PA836&dq=%2522richard+thomas%2522+bucks> richard+thomas%22+bucks<http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC01727483&id=bwtNS1C8ljwC&pg=PA836&lpg=PA836&dq=%2522richard+thomas%2522+bucks> is the link to the Google book - it's the Davis book - pg. 836. I have heard of those taverns, too, btw. Now all I have to do is find out where he lived. :) It's really hard to find the right Thomas link as it is - this is the first little clue we've had outside of his son's marriage license. Lynn

    3. Very often these were "ordinaries" which were more like hotels that were operated in the person's home. They provided a place to sleep out of the cold and rain/snow (sometimes just a space on the floor to throw their blanket), food, water and a safe place for horses, liquor, and hot meals. The state would dictate what could be charged for each service. These were not taverns as we think of them--and they were not hotels with private rooms, either. The clients would sleep in the same room as the others, sometimes including the owner and his family. I have read of as many as 20-30 people sleeping and eating/drinking in a one room cabin that was probably smaller than your living room. 3. Alan; Thanks again for scanning all of the great Bucks County resources that you do! I didn't realize the Vansants were one of your families. One of my brick walls is Jannetje (or Jane) Vansant b. 1736 d. 1813 and married Nicholas Vanartsdalen 1759 at North and Southampton Reformed Church (aka Churchville Presbyterian at that time). Can not seem to find who her parents were. Just thought it was worth running by you in case you have come across her in your research. Thanks again; Marion Kane [email protected]
