    3. Unfortunately, while Davis's book is a big help, he could not include all of the family members by the 1800's that each family had. I have searched all three books about Bucks county and realize that many members of my own family existed that were not mentioned, or he had incomplete information on. ( After all, he did not have a computer in those days or access to all the information highways we have today). I find a trip to the Mercer Museum and the court house records and the Daily Intelligencer micro-film, helps to locate many more family members. It is well worth the time and money and the "Best Western Hotel" in Peddler's Village is a reasonable, clean place to stay if you have no relatives in the area. I have many relatives in the area, but on occasion I too have stayed there. Linda The no1rosemom http://www.no1rosemom.net --------------------------------- 8:00? 8:25? 8:40? 3. Valerie; I have "A Genealogical & Personal History of Bucks Co., PA" by WWH Davis on a CD. Not sure if it is his first or second book; but it is all biographical sketches of families. I checked the index and there are 28 Girton's listed and unfortunately there is no Joseph included in the book. Just because there were 28 listings mentioned does not mean there were 28 sketches of Girton's. Many would have been mentioned because they married into other families that were being sketched. Sorry there doesn't seem to be any help there; however, there is a sketch of Garrett B. Girton who was about 75 at the writing which, I believe was about 1890. It states that his ancestors had been residents of N. J. for several generations. I cannot e-mail from the CD; but if you are interested in seeing this bio, I can print it out and send it to you through snail mail, if you send me that address. Marion Kane

    1. [PABUCKS] History of Bucks Co., PA book - GIRTON - Lookup Please
    2. Does anyone have either the 1st or 2nd editions of the History of Bucks Co., PA. I am researching my Joseph H(?) GIRTON. I know he was born about 1813 in PA from late 1800's census records, but he had all his children in Stephenson Co., IL and then moved the whole family to Page Co., IA where they lived out their lives. He married someone named Mary _____ who was almost 20 years younger than him. I have no marriage date. They didn't have their first child until he was 44. His 5 children were, Julia Elizabeth, Sarah Amanda, Thomas L.E., Lydia C. and Catherine. I have never been able to find who his parents are and recently found out that the History of Bucks Co., PA includes bios on a Girton. I would like to find out if anyone who has that book might look up the GIRTON in there and let me know their names/dates and other info so I can again have a lead to follow up on to locate more info on my Joseph. I thank anyone in advance for their help! Valerie in KS

    2. Bench and bar of Michigan : a volume of history and biography BENCH AND BAR OF MICHIGAN Pages 499. & 500. CHARLES FLOWERS, Detroit. MR. FLOWERS was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, December 14, 1845. His parents were JOSEPH and SARAH (PICKERING) FLOWERS. His mother was a descendant of TIMOTHY FLOWERS, Secretary of State under WASHINGTON, and of Revolutionary fame. His parents were both natives of Pennsylvania, and of the Quaker faith. His father was of old English and Dutch descent, and his ancestors emigrated to Pennsylvania very early in the history of the colony. His parents, now both deceased, lived on a farm in Bucks County, on which CHARLES remained until about eighteen years of age, helping his father with the farm work and attending the public schools during the winter season. He left home at this period of his life for the first time, and made his way to New York City, where he was given employment as a stenographer in the offices of the Grand Trunk Railway. He then attended the Collegiate Institute at Fort Edwards for two years. He was employed by the government for a time to report military commissions in Raleigh, North Carolina. Leaving this service he returned to New York and took up the study of law with BANGS, SEDGWICK and NORTH. He was with them a year and in 1886 came to Detroit. In that city he secured a position as reporter in the Wayne Circuit and United States Courts, which he held for thirteen years. During this time he reported the proceedings of the constitutional conventions of Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio. He also continued the study of law while engaged in reportorial work, and had JUDGE BROWN as his preceptor. This eminent gentleman was presiding over the United States District Court of Detroit, but now is on the Bench of the Supreme Court. He was admitted to the Bar in 1878, but continued reporting until 1880. He was then elected Circuit Court Commissioner, and served a term of four years. In 1884 he was nominated as a candidate for prosecuting attorney but was defeated. He then took up the practice of his profession in which he has been engaged to the present time. He was appointed member of the Fire Commission in April, 1895, which position he still holds. He is now Corporation Counsel for Detroit, having received his appointment in July, 1896 from MAYOR PINGREE. He has always taken an active part in politics, and is an earnest worker for the Republican Party. He made the nominating speech presenting GOVENOR PINGREE before the Grand Rapids Convention, and was complimented for its manifest ability and oratorical power. In the practice of law, he has won a place for himself that is both honorable and prominent. Capable men in the profession who know him willingly accord to him the possession of brilliant parts and demonstrated ability. He was married to MISS MARY E. DE NORMANDIE, a native of Pennsylvania in 1868. They have three children, one of whom, NORMAN, is engaged in practice with his father, and is a graduate of the Law Department of the University of Michigan. ===================================================== Jacqueline Sleeper Russell website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=jacquelinesr&surna me=A

    2. "COPIES OF PAPERS RECEIVED FROM MISS MARY C. BEAN PERTAINING TO JOHN JOSEPH ABERCROMBIE (RTA)" (E-mailed to me by BRENDA ABERCROMBIE LEDET) This is a transcription of a letter written by my 3-great grandmother ERNESTINE (ABERCROMBIE) FIELD to her brother, GEN. JOHN JOSEPH ABERCROMBIE, JR. ERNESTINE lived in Philly until her death in 1890 at age 96. ================================== Letter 1. Philadelphia, 17th April, '71 [1871] My dear Brother, ****** I wrote to Sarah Goodman some weeks ago, but have never received a line in answer. Now I draw the conclusion she has never rec'd. the letter, or has correspondence which occupies all her time. I love Sarah very much, she was kind and attentive when I stayed several days with her. I hope her impression of me is as favorable as mine of her. ***** Regarding the De Normandies, I have cast them from memory and interest. I know many years ago Mam told me her Uncle Abraham went to Geneva, I think that was the place, and spent all he could get possession of. I know from the Biles Family, John De Normandie, Mama's Nephew, her only Brother's Son, is now enjoying what property he could get in France, a few years ago. Caroline has one letter in her possession, but the most reliable information of the Family you could obtain would be from Capt. E. W. Willets, 209 Fourth St., opposite St. Mary's Catholic Church. His Mother was a De Normandie, and nearly related to Mama. This address he gave me when after a search he found me out and visited me. I suppose he is still in that location, as I was told he was well off and owned the house. I know he is a very pleasant and friendly gentlemanly person, and would be highly pleased to see the most distant relative of the De Normandie Family. For my part I would have turned my attention to the old Stock "Abercrombies" for an entailed estate no one can wrest from you. You should write to our Consul to search the "Kings Lyon Office" where my Father told me all the Abercrombie Papers were on record. I must conclude - or be too late for this mail - very affectionately with love to all, your ever affectionate. Ernestine. ============================================== Research on CAPT. I am descended from Clarissa who married Thomas Kirkbride Biles. The information that you have regarding the DeNormandie family history can be found in a book by Arthur Sandys titled "Annals of De Normandie" that can be found at the NYC Public Library as well as at the New England Historical & Genealogical Society in Boston, MA, and the Library of Congress. The only place where the book was easily accessible was in Boston, where it had been the gift of Louis Joseph Sands, the brother of Arthur Sandys, the author. Both of the other libraries house it in the rare book section and require special permission to view it. The book specifies that there were only 50 copies printed and were for the family. It is truly a treasure to anyone who is descended from this noble family. I have one entry in my files that differs from what you have and that is that Wm. Penn De Normandie (1824-1881) married Sarah Ten Eyck 18 Feb 1854 in Shodack Landing, NY. Regarding the Biles family, the children of Thomas Kirkbride Biles and his wife Clarissa DeNormandie were: Mary, Thomas J. (1793-1848), Charles (1795-1865), William Henry, James D. I just found that item by SANDYS today through GOOGLE BOOKS. (see items found below) I am a member of the NEHGS but live in California and cannot go to Boston to use their library but I do have a cousin who lives in Vermont who goes there every once in a while. He is a cousin by marriage. I have 18 pages of DE NORMANDIE research coming in mail from the National Genealogy Society, Arlington, VA. How do you descend from THOMAS KIRKBRIDE BILES? Do you have a website? I thought for sure CLARISSA was CLARE because of all the girls named CLARA DE NORMANDIE ABERCROMBIE in my ABERCROMBIE-DE NORMANDIE family. Collated, translated and explained by ARTHUR SANDYS. Cambridge. Printed by Riverside Press. 1901. 8vo. pp.308 1ll. The history of this distinguished family, cromprised in this volume, is comprised from such authentic sources, as the papers brought from Geneva by the immigrant ancestor of the American DE NORMANDIES, the records of Geneva, mentioned in the title, and of Noyon, a city of Picardie, also those of the Parliament of Paris, the tomes of the Grand Bibiotheque de France, and a collection of domestic letters. From such materials, MR. SANDYS has elaborated a narration of great interest, and one which, as it relates the part the family played by the family in promoting the Reformation, is also of historical significance. That the justifyable pride taken in narrating the share of the DE NORMANDIES in such a momentous movement has not obscured the author's discrimination, is evident in his discriptions of CALVIN and of the effects produced by his creed. The book is printed on heavy, unbleached, deckle-edge paper, and bound in boards with buckram back, its exterior being in ideal keeping with the contents of dealing with families and persons of exceptional distinction. ========================================================= [Manuscript notes of the genealogies of the Sandys, De Normandie, and Cruger families]. by Arthur Sandys Type: English : Book Publisher: [S.l., 1895?-1913?] OCLC: 58762088 Subjects: De Normandie family. | Sandys family. | Cruger family. | Normandie family. ======================================================================== Jacqueline Sleeper Russell website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=jacquelinesr
