>From the library I find that it was built in 1897 to house the Tioga Point Historical Society and a public library. Mr. Jesse Spalding of Chicago, a native of Athens, PA, donated $15,000 (which eventually became $25,000) for the building. It was erected in memory of his son, Robert L. Spalding. On a bronze plaque in the library: In Loving Memory 1872 - Robert L. Spalding - 1895 This Building was Erected by His Father, Jesse Spalding As a Gift to the Inhabitants of Athens Township In 1930, Mrs. Jessie Spalding Landon, daughter of Jesse Spalding left $50,000 to the library in her will.
