I've just joined the list and am hoping someone can help me. Could anyone give me sources for information on the Chemung County Poorhouse, located in Horseheads (or Breesport), NY? I just found my gr-gr-grandfather listed there on the 1892 NY census. I found a paragraph on it in the History of Horseheads in the "A History of the Valley and County of Chemung" by Ausburn Towner, 1892 on the Tri-Counties site which was interesting. Why would someone end up there, especially if they had a wife and a number of grown children living in the same area who could reasonably be expected to care for him if he was destitute and/or ill? Would the people who lived in there have been buried in the following cemetery that is listed on the Tri-Counties cemetery index? And can anyone tell me where I could find a listing for it? Breesport County Farm Cemetery (Poor Farm or Chemung County Home) Horseheads / Chemung (C14) Thanks for any information anyone can give me, Sandy Heaxt
