Hi Listers, I am looking for the maiden name of Melissa Horton, wife of John Horton, mother of Ruth Ellen Horton Wheeler, who was the wife of Harry D. Wheeler of Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA. John Horton was born in Chenango Co., NY, 6 Aug. 1812. Melissa was born in 1813, probably in NY. John Horton is buried in the Wellsboro Cemetery in the Wheeler plot but Melissa is not. Ruth Ellen Horton Wheeler was the first wife of Harry D. Wheeler and Ida Butler was the second wife. Census records show that John and Melissa Horton lived with Harry D. Wheeler at his farm in Wellsboro. Janet Watkins, retired deputy count clerk of Tioga Co., is a descendant of Harry D. Wheeler and Ida Butler. While she is very helpful if I know what records that I need, she has no interest in the family history. The History of Tioga County, PA, has a large write up about Harry D. Wheeler, but I found nothing about the Hortons. Any help would be appreciated. Les Freeman
