Hi, yes, it is the right spelling, and according to a two-year span of personal family letters in my possession, evidently it was quite prevalent in the 1860's. There was even a doctor in Iowa, according to one of the letters, who specialized in this disease, and was noted for his successful cures. Sometimes it caused much painful swelling of the face as well as the inflamed tissues. It is cellulitis primarily of the face and arms caused by a staph infection.
