My great great grandfather John B. Gorham wrote about being unable to do any work for nearly two months as he was suffering from erysipelas in the "Letters to Mary BURNS Gorham (letter #03). My research said it was an acute inflamation of the skin formerly called St. Anthony's Fire. I didn't know it could be fatal, but I suppose under the right conditions any bacterial infection can. It is cellulitis primarily of the face and arms caused by a staph infection.
