List, What is the definition of a freedman/freeman in the 1820 era? Are there records of them? If so, where would I be likely to find that type record? The man I am looking for is Waterman H. McIntyre listed as a freedman in the 1823 tax records for Wells Twp.,Bradford Co. Any help appreciated. I don't know the difference to your Freedman/Freeman question, but if you check out the site www.familysearch.org, and click the download/order products/ click Immigration & Freedman you will see the they have to offer on the Freedman CD. This is the description of the Freedman CD. Description The Freedman's Bank was created to assist newly freed slaves during and after the Civil War. The records cover the time period from about 1864 to 1871 and document the names and family relationships of those who used the bank. While the information contained in these records is very incomplete by normal genealogical standards, they are some of the very few records that document these individuals and are a vital source of information for those with African American ancestry. There are approximately 480,000 names in the file, which have been entered in a pedigree-linked GEDCOM format.
