Did you know ? NY had STATE CENSUS every 5yrs between the Federal ones. They are all available in Cooperstown at the Fenimore Museum and of course Albany. Don't know if or where in the Western part of the State. Good Hunting, Sarah.

Don't know if or where in the Western part of the State. That isn't entirely accurate as there was no New York State census in 1795, 1805, and 1815. The New York State census begin in 1825 and are every ten years, skipping 1845, and 1885, again in 1892, and then 1905, 1915, 1925. The 1855 and 1865 census enumerations are very good and give much more information than the federal census. For Chemung County they are at the County Clerk's office on Lake Street in book form. The Steele Library did have some and perhaps all of them now. Most counties have them locally at the county level, local library or historical society in original form or on microfilm. 1825 and 1835 for Southport, Chemung County are online on the Tri County site maintained by Joyce.
