Dear Lorei and List, When you go to the Vitial Statistics in Chemung Co., Elmira, NY., it is on John St.,( near St. Joseph's Hospital.) Johns St. is a cross street between Church and E. Water St. They have the new exit for Water St opened now and the one for Church St is closed---off NY RT 17 and future I-86. I think John St. is 3-4 streets off the exits. The cost to find and copy the certificates is $11.00 each. There are forms there for you to fill out. When I called the other day the lady said that they do have some birth records back to 1860, depending on what town it is. Self addressed envelopes are not required but I wonder if it wouldn't be nice to have them ready for the searcher. So I would guess that all you need to have is as much info as you can and a pen, and oh yes--money or check book.
