    3. The Booth Library of the Chemung County Historical Society will host an open house Friday, October 11, 2002 from 4:00-7:00PM in observance of Archives Week. Members of the society and the general public are welcome to meet the library staff and volunteers and peruse treasures from The Booth Library's manuscript, photograph, map and rare book collections, which will be exhibited on-site for one day only. Archives Week (held this year from October 6-13) is an annual, weeklong, national observance of important historical documents to our lives. Among the local historical documents to be exhibited for this event are Mark Twain's marriage certificate, a late eighteenth century land grant, Civil War documents and early "x-rays" on glass plate. Researchers from around the world use The Booth Library's resources for genealogical research, house histories, , and to study such topics the Elmira Prison Camp, Elmira's role in the Civil War, Mark Twain in Elmira, regional railways, and many other subjects specific to the Chemung Valley region. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer research questions and to help plan historical research. The Booth Library is located on the second floor of the Chemung Valley History Museum Building at 415 E. Water Street, Elmira, NY Admission to the event is free. Light refreshments will be served.
