Hi, folks. I have the same question. My great great grandmother came to the US from the Virgin Islands to Steuben County in 1865. She was a widow, and I think she was born in St.Croix, which was then Danish. Possibly her family was British. When she died, in 1892 in Chicago, her death certificate lists citizenshp as American. She owned land in Chicago at that time. Did a person have to become a citizen to own land in her own name? She never remarried, so I know she must have become a citizen, probably in either Steuben County or in Mansfield, where she lived around 1875. Help, help! Smiles today. The daffodils are so beautiful on the Tri-counties site, aren't they?
