I can't say how far back they go, but divorce records are found in the Prothonotary's office in the Courthouse. They are in something known as the 'Lunatics Book" (!!) It's a ledger of "lunatics, habitual drunkards, those restrained by injunction from selling or encumbering Real Estate and persons against whom divorce have been granted". The book has indexes of the files which you can then view on microfilm. A quick call to the office should tell you how far back they have files. I viewed a divorce record from 1877 this summer. Interesting reading - he "failed to provide the necessities of life". I requested the widow pension record of thier daughter Mary Cease Newell. When questioned, She said that her parents were Stephen Cease and Alzadia Woodard and she was born in 1846. When she was about 4, her parents seperated and a few years later divorced. She was sent to live with her mothers sister Lydia McConnell and her brother Daniel Cease was bonded out to a Mr. Purshal or Parshall. Do you know if any divorce records would exist around 1850 to 1858? I give 1858 because Alzadia remarried then to Henry Buck. Does any one know if these records still exist and where I would write to find them? She said that she was in Sullivan, Tioga COunty until the age of 19 so I would think her mother would have gotten it there. Nancy Hicks
