I hope I don't point you on a wild goose chase, but I do know of an ELLIS family that was in the area, from Forty Fort, PA, by 1795 or earlier. Ellistown, Tioga County NY is today known as Barton, NY. Chemung County was cut out of Tioga NY about 1836, I believe. I don't know the whole Ellis lineup (Calista Ellis married Hugh HILL) Calista's father Samuel was one of at least 5 children of Israel Ellis. If you take this link http://tinyurl.com/2szoo and correspond with the researcher, the two of you may have some luck fitting your Robert somewhere.
