Hi this is Michelle, Jeanne's daughter. Mom hasn't had access to the computer for awhile now and she wanted me to let all of you know that her father passed away today, December 30th. If you want to give her a little message you can email either one of us. She sometimes checks her mail at a friend's house or mine. My email address is lilmisc3@aol.com. Michelle
I am looking for any Campbell's listed on the rooster of the war of 1812 from PA or New York. Thank You and Happy New Year. Cathy
I'm researching the WHITE family: John White b. ? m. ? McClain Eliza P. White b. 1833 Thanks, Donna
I> Elba, PA ??? My guess is that this is Alba, in Bradford Co. Dave Morehouse Hopkins, MN
I hope I don't point you on a wild goose chase, but I do know of an ELLIS family that was in the area, from Forty Fort, PA, by 1795 or earlier. Ellistown, Tioga County NY is today known as Barton, NY. Chemung County was cut out of Tioga NY about 1836, I believe. I don't know the whole Ellis lineup (Calista Ellis married Hugh HILL) Calista's father Samuel was one of at least 5 children of Israel Ellis. If you take this link http://tinyurl.com/2szoo and correspond with the researcher, the two of you may have some luck fitting your Robert somewhere. Happy and Prosperous New Year to all; I'm still going through my Dad's things (he passed away 2 years ago) and I came across a little slip of paper with my Great Granddaddy's name on it and the town of Elba, PA. I looked on my Atlas and could not find "Elba", Pennsylvania. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thank you in advance . . . Lynn WORRELL Hudson Great granddaughter of James H. WORRELL, son of Darlington and Mary Lee WORRELL - 1856.
Hello all, I am new on this list and like so many others I have a brick wall that I can't seem to get around. Any help will be gratefully appreciated. My gr.grandfather was born in Bethany, N. Y. 1842. His name was Robert S. Ellis. I am looking for his father and all I know is that he was born in N. Y. I was looking through the Chemung Co. Elmira area I found a Allen Ellis and the ages of the male children, one seems to fit. Is there any possible way to put a name to Allen's children? According to the 1880 census Robert's mother was born in Pa. so it does seem to me that they must all come from the tri-county area. Thanks for any help at all. Cynthia Ellis cellis@cmc.net
Back at it again. My gggrandfather bought land in Chemung township in 1830. He died in 1861 and is buried in Forest Lawn cemetary. I need help in locating whoever has the records from the cemetary. I'm sure finding anything about his death is hard to come by. I have been trying to trace his roots for several years. Gramps name was Samuel French born in Boston 1791. His wife was named Fanny born in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated. Charlie French
I have been getting inquiries of where Tioga Township in present Bradford County was located in response to my earlier email on the Tioga Township assessment list. Rev. David Craft in the History of Bradford County, Pennsylvania states that in the division of Tioga Township in 1797, which was formed in 1790 as part of Luzerne County, the northern portion became Athens and the southern portion became Ulster and that the name Tioga was "lost to our county." This does not seem to be the case and the name Tioga continued to be used on the 1800 census and on the 1808 assessment list. Tioga Township was formed in 1790 in what is now Bradford County as part of Luzerne County and was bounded by the north line of the State, on the east by the county line, on the south by an east-west line and on the west by the county line. The township is related to have been seventy-six miles in length from east to west and slightly more than eighteen miles from north to south. In 1795 the township was divided and the southerly portion became Wysox. In 1797 Tioga was further divided and the southern portion became Ulster. In the 1800 census of Luzerne County there were four townships in present Bradford County - Tioga, Ulster, Wysox, and Wyalusing (north to south in that order). Each of the first three were related to have been about six miles from north to south and seventy-five miles from east to west (extending across the entire width of the present County). In 1801, Tioga was further reduced by the creation of Rush and Mt. Zion (now Orwell) Townships, which included pr! esent Windham and Warren Townships. The 1808 assessment list is called Tioga and not Athens, which was perhaps created in late 1807 for the 1808 tax year. The 1808 Tioga Assessment list included what is now Athens, Ridgebury, South Creek, Wells, and the western portion of Litchfield townships. By the 1810 census enumeration the name Tioga had been dropped and Athens, Lycoming County had been adopted. To get a visual idea of the township formations, a map on page 112a of Rev. David Craft's History of Bradford County, Pennsylvania shows Tioga Township (labeled as Athens), before the creation of Lycoming County and then the creation of Bradford County. Connecticut held title to the same lands and had a completely different set of divisions, boundaries, and names. The Connecticut surveys refered to the area as Athens and Pennsylvania refered to the above described area as Tioga. J. Kelsey Jones
The "Census Taker" It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children ... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not quite two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the colour, the age .. The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? Or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some and write some ... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God Bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... it's now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voices in our heart. Author Unknown Happy Holidays to ALL! John H. If you are researching early Bradford County assessment (tax) lists, there are lists available that predate the formation of Bradford County. 1776 - Up The River District, Westmoreland County, Connecticut (included Susquehanna Valley and under Connecticut claim) 1777 - Up The River District, Westmoreland County, Connecticut 1796 - Tioga Township - 2 separate lists (Heverly and Murray and both contain more information on these lists than what was published in Pioneer and Patriot Families) 1796 - Wyalusing 1796 - Wysox 1802 - Ulster 1802 - Rush 1804 - Orwell 1804 - Burlington 1806 - Canton 1808 - Tioga The above townships existed before the creation of many of the present townships and covered a much larger area than present day. For instance, the Tioga assessment of 1808, covered present Wells, South Creek, Ridgebury, Athens, and the western half of Litchfield Townships. The above lists are copies from printed material and not copies of the originals. They are available at the Bradford County Historical Society Research Center. For information on other available assessment lists go to: http://www.bradfordhistory.com/Research/AssessmentBooks.asp Assessment lists are under utilized and an excellent resource for genealogical research. The Sayre Evening Times just published a b/w glossy photo book entitled "Memories". It is $46, hardcover, 128 pages of pictures of people and scenes of Waverly, N.Y, Sayre and Athens, PA, (known as the "Valley" to the locals), 1900s through the 1970s. Most of the people in the pictures are identified. (My brother Jim is in there.) I think this will be of interest to the genealogists who subscribe to this message board. I found it absolutely fascinating, well worth the money. Here's the link: http://www.eveningtimes.com/ I just got the book yesterday. Until yesterday, they had an easy clickable link where you could order the book. Now you have to call. Mike Tuccinardi
I have not been on this list in a couple of years...looks like y'all are kinda quiet these days! LOL At one time I was getting 20-30 emails a day from this list! Anyway...there are a group of 1850's photos of Charles Chaffee for sale on EBAY. They are not mine and I know nothing further about them. Hopefully a family member can get them. They may not sell, because they are being promoted on the value of the son (who is not pictured) who fought in the Civil War. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3261218770&category=408&r d=1 Mike Wennin Come Visit the Cameron County Genealogy Project! http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacamero
