Alice, Please contact me. I do not have your email address. Thanks, Joyce M. Tice
I'm looking for any information about my great grandfather, George Scott McKinney, who lived in Lawrenceville, PA until his death on June 24, 1907. I believe that he was a minister for the Methodist Episcopal Church, but I have not been able to confirm this with church records. He was married to Martha Ames, who died in Elmira, NY on March 7, 1933. I believe they had two children, Louis Harland McKinney (MacKinney) and Eva McKinney. In particular, I am interested in some information about George's parents and any information about Eva. Thanks, A. L. MacKinney
Hi All, It seems that I need to define what I mean by local. Local refers to the three counties represented on my site. Please submit information about history related events within the three county area that the site represents. Events should be history related. That does not include your church dinner or boy scout meeting. Thanks, Joyce M. Tice
Hi All, As you know, I no longer use the site's mail list as a form of communication to my guests. Be sure instead to check the site's What's New pages regularly for information on new additions to the site's massive library as well as local events that historians will enjoy and any messages that I need to communicate to you. If you are sponsoring a local event of interest to history minded folks or know of one in your area locally, please be sure to notify me at my regular address of JoyceTice@aol.com for it to be included. I have added a section at the bottom of March's What's New page for events that will occur later in the year - Future events. That way I won't forget them if I am notified early and people can plan ahead. If you are from out of the area and plan to visit here you might want to schedule it to coincide with one of the local events that interests you. The What's New pages always link from just below the top photo on the site's main page. You can reach it when you want it and not have it cluttering up your already overloaded email box. For those of you who are still not using the site on a regular basis, or who have not fully explored its 11,000 plus pages, the main page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm. I am also hoping to work more closely with more of the local historical organizations to publicize their resources. I have added a page this morning for the LeRoy Museum which so nicely contacted me and have started communications with the Johnny Jones Museum. We will be presenting them on site soon. If you have a local historical society - township level - and want more exposure to the Internet community, work with me to give you a place on the site. A write-up and some photos of your facility will be a good start. Notification of your events to me directly will also help increase your traffic and possibly your membership. Stay in touch and Best Wishes. Joyce M. Tice
This maybe sound like a crazy request, but after my question I will tell you a success story that is astonishing. My grandfather was Robert E. Dewing, his father was Fred Dewing, son of Andrew and Esther. My grandfather died in 1985. My mother and him would attend the Dewing Reunions in Warren Center. In 1988 I went to my first reunion and took my video camera. I have Mary and Nellie (Fred's sisters) on video, and Carl Dewing (Robert's brother). Did any of you ever take photos or videos of the reunion prior to 1985. I would love to have any images of Robert Dewing. This maybe reaching, but let me tell you my story now... About three years ago, my Uncle Robert Thomas (Tom) Dewing visited my mother and father at their house on Old State Road in Binghamton. They live on the land that was owned by Fred and Robert, and Uncle Harry. To make a long story very short. A conversation was stirred up by me wishing that I had audio of grandpa's voice. My uncle informed me that about 30 years ago, he and a friend signed out camera equipment for a place in Binghamton. They video taped the farm and interviewed my grandfather. Being a family history buff, I pressed my Uncle into a hundred questions. Each one being...."Rob, that was 30 years ago. The tape is long gone." I begged him to make some phone calls. Well...imagine our surprise. The director of the studio that signed out the cameras (30 years ago) was still the director and he said he has hundred of tapes (old 1/2 reel to reel) in his garage, but most are damaged and brittle. I called him throughout the next three years just keeping us on his mind. One day I walked into work to find an email....."Rob, I found the tape!" So, we sent the tape down to NYC to have it converted and saved (the odds were not in our favor). When the tape came back, I was afraid of what was on there. Was it blank, was it not our tape? Soon my grandfather's farm and sounds filled the air, and soon my grandfather sitting at the table eating breakfast and being interviewed graced the faded screen. After 18 years of silence after he died, his voice echoed into our hearts again. Nothing short of a miracle. So, hopefully there will be more tapes or photos out there to share with my children and their children. Please let me know. Thanks to you all. Robert Shoemaker

I've "rescued" an old family letter written by Frankie ROCKWELL of West Burlington, Pennsylvania to her brother Mr. Lewis AUSTIN of Williamston, Michigan in 1889. In the letter she mentions her husband Gamage ROCKWELL and his uncle Azor ROCKWELL. The letter is as follows: Letter to: Mr. Lewis AUSTIN Williamston, Ingham Co., Michigan Mailed from: East Troy, PA on July 15, 1889 Dated: July 1889 at West Burlington Dear Brother Lewis: I thought I would try and write you a few lines it is now after five and I will hurry we have 3 boarders Gamages Father and Uncle Azor own 165 acres joining this place and they have got a peice of wheat on it and are cutting it Uncle Azor and his 2 men board here and Father and his go down home Gamage is helping them to day he has got in some hay has a peice of Barley and a small peice of rye about ready to cut we have got a nice piece of spring wheat one piece of our corn look very nice and the other piece the water drown out we have terrible floods her this spring several towns and one city completely destroyed by water. What did you think of Helens picture I sent you by Mother I ment to sent you more was will send something some other time I will send you one of our cards. Write soon with love from us all I will close Your Loving Sister Frankie Calling card for Mr. & Mrs. G. ROCKWELL enclosed Based on limited research I believe that the letter is written by Frankie Helen MEADE, daughter of Frankie MEADE and Helen CALKINS b. 25 Nov 1867 at West Burlington, PA, who married Gamage ROCKWELL in Burlington, PA, and d. 30 Jun 1941 at Elmira, NY. Frankie & Gamage ROCKWELL had at least one child, Mildred Bertha ROCKWELL b. 8 Sept 1893 at West Burlington, PA. Mildred died 14 Apr 1969 at Canton, PA and was buried in Elmira, NY. Gamage ROCKWELL was b. 13 Sept 1863 in West Burlington, PA and d. 8 Apr 1922 in Elmira, NY. Gamage was the son of Orlando Willard ROCKWELL and Mary Eliza GAMAGE. During the 1880 census Orlando (age 50) & Mary (age 43) ROCKWELL are listed in West Burlington, PA with four sons, Delos (age 21), Gamage (age 17), Willard (age 9), and Irvine (age 7). All listed as having been born in PA, with Orlando's parents born in Vermont and New York respectively. Also listed in the 1880 census at Troy, PA is Azor ROCKWELL (age 45) along with his wife Eliza (age 46), a daughter Jennie (age 17), and son Azor R. (age 5). Again, all born in PA with Azor's parents born in Vermont and New York and Eliza's parents both born in MA. I'm hoping to find someone from this family so that this wonderful old piece of family history can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
A correspondent whose name & email have since become dustbunnies somewhere within my whimsical "filing system" once responded about Africa, who is buried at Tioga Co, PA. Recently I'd learned some info to pass on if he/she's out there - that may be new since the couple of online trees I found only show his wife's given name. From Frank Doherty's "Settlers of the Beekman Patent Dutchess County New York", the publication states she was Mary BURDICK, probably daughter of Robert who was a neighbor of Africa's father George. I guess her surname's not much of a secret since Burdick's the given name of one of Africa and Mary's sons. Kaye in Texas __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I am looking for a relative named Alexander Johnstone that we have been told returned to Reynoldsville, PA to live. We believe he was born 29 June 1861, Dunfermline, Scotland. I have found him on the 1880 census in IA. After that I cannot find him. He was married, but we don't know who to. Can anyone tell me where Reynoldsville is, if it still is, or what it changed to. I have noticed searching other family members that several of the town names are either extinct or have changed. Thank you. Have a blessed day! Perhaps some gracious expert on Athens, Bradford Co., PA and on Bradford County, PA Real Estate records can provide some guidance that will help me in my research on my Rice lineage. It is recorded that Prince Bryant was among the first settlers in the Athens/Ulster areas of Athens, PA (also called Milltown). It is also recorded that Prince Brant was the builder of a grain mill and damn on Cayuta Creek in Milltown just south of the present Pennsylvania - New York state lines. Subseqeuently, John Shephard obtained and operated the facility and in about 1817 conveyed the mill and dam to Wanton Rice. Wanton continued to be recorded as living in Athens through the 1830 census. I have a copy of the deed recording Wanton"s purchase of the dam and mill but have not found any record of the conveyance of the ownership of the mill and dam to his children or to anyone else. Is it likely that Bradford County land records would have a continuing chain of title in it's records somewhere showing the conveyance of the grain and mill to another party of record? Where in County land records would such information be most likely to be found, assuming the conveyance would have occurred in th 1820' to 1830's? Many thanks!
