    3. Hi list, This is another long sad story about a computer...I lost a lot of "My Favorites". I'm looking for a Pennsylvania website someone posted several months ago, that had a search database of thousands of colonial Pennsylvania documents. It was one of those real treasures! I tried the archives site but did not find this particular one. Please help. ===== Catherine Hollenbeck Comeau =^..^= Researching the Hollenbacks __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 3. I want to thank all of the subscribers and volunteers to this list with a special thanks to Pat at Erin, NY. I went to my mail box yesterday and did I have a surprise. I had a letter from Pat and enclosed in it with a short note were five photcopied sheets of material of my Grandfather Carson brother's wedding. These included a copy of the marriage certificate, signatures in the guests book, and the wedding announcement. The marriage took place in 1908. The guest book contained signatures of my grandparents, and several of his brothers and sisters. What a treasure! Thank again. It was trhough one fo the roll calls on this list that I posted and Pat saw my post and wrote me. Thanks again Pat and for all your work in Erin. 3. I'm looking for the Bethlehem Church in East Point, Liberty, PA. My great, great grandparents were married there is 1860. Perhaps the church has been renamed? Is anyone familiar with the church? What denomination was the church? Is anyone familiar with a Rev. Simon D. Aurind? (spelling?) Thank you!

    1. Summer 2004 local cemetery readings - Note to volunteers
    2. Hi All cemetery reading volunteers, I will probably not have a meeting this year to review our intended Tri-County cemetery readings as we have done in the past. If you disagree with that, just send me a note and we can reconsider. If several of you would like to have it, we will, but it has not been as well attended as would be really productive. For those of you who have been able to attend regularly in previous years, thank you so much. I appreciate it a lot and so do the thousands of people who use our listings. Instead, if those of you who anticipate doing any cemetery readings this summer, will notify me what you plan to do, I can update the list and have an idea what is in progress. The present list with all the intentions I know of so far remains on the site in the Volunteers section of the site's Online Research Library. If this approach does not work for us, I will consider a meeting again if that will be more helpful. Just let me know what you think about it. Thanks to all our volunteers. You are the BEST!!! 3. I agree with "two cents worth." I have been doing genealogy many years and I too have seen some of my "old" work on internet that is incorrect but since have been corrected but the old is still there. Get your sources and proof. -----Original Message----- From: Chocybrown@aol.com [mailto:Chocybrown@aol.com] Sent: Friday, May 14, 2004 5:46 AM To: PABRADFO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Tri-Counties] Ancestry * Etc My two cents worth----While both of you have made good points on the subject of "free" verses "paid" on-line help---------------My "old" work still appears on some of the "paid" services which over 30 years appeared with the "Everton Publishing Company" in the form of queries which I paid to submit------------the information from the first "database" they had (via their publication) I also paid for while others had to pay a fee to get the information I placed in the database. That service was very valuable; as I made many contacts (by snail mail) with people who I was able to help and they likewise were able to help me. I also found some wonderful new friends and family members which you can not put a price on----------------------However, the "reality" today is that I recognize some of my old work of years ago that was INCORRECT and which I have since found the CORRECT information. This has been done over many years spent going over the "original" documents (wills, deeds, courthouse records and so forth).-----------------------The people on-line today are still passing around "wrong" information found on-line from many sources-------------Yes, this does point you in the right direction BUT you must do the base original WORK to prove your family history to truely have a valid history. ALSO, alot of the old "database" data from Everton is still out there burned forever in a CD! So, buyer "beware" and "always" seek to find that "document" that proves your data, thereby, gaining a true "fact"! 3. I agree. I have been researching for only 5 years, but I have found everything I ever needed online. Census look-ups are available for free on rootsweb census email lists or if you need to see the actual census you can purchase them on CD's for less than $20 and use them at will, then sell them when you are through. I have never talked with anyone who got their money's worth out of one of these subscriptions. Just would hate to see anyone throw money away. Supporting FREE genealogy! 3. Carol, If you use Netscape, I hope you haven't spent your money on Ancestry, yet! With Netscape, Ancestry only works with versions 4.6 or 7.0. I used Ancestry's link to update from Netscape 6.0 to 7.0. However, Ancestry's link actually took me to version 7.1, not 7.0, which I didn't notice until it was installed in my computer. Ancestry's census images can't be read or printed with 7.1, so I attempted to un-install 7.1. It didn't completely un-install. I had to send to Netscape and buy a CD of version 7.0. That still didn't work. To make a long story short, I was without my desktop computer for over five months, while it was in the shop . Eventually everything had to be wiped out of the drive and new programs reinstalled. Fortunately, my genealogy files were in my laptop. Also, If you are on a fixed income, the way Ancestry bundles their services gets very, very expensive! And, yes, I realize that the services they provide cost them a lot. But, the arrogance of their tech staff - if you can even ferret them out - leaves a lot to be desired. My recommendation is to use Ancestry, sparingly, if at all. More and more web sites are springing up. You might try "Googling" the thing for which you are searching. Good Luck. 1. Ancestry vs. Genealogy.com
    2. Ray W. Justus
    3. I support free genealogy too, Mike, but I'm also strongly in favor of the online "for profit" companies. They serve a valid purpose and my experiences with them have been very good. I have online subscriptions with both Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com. I have been more pleased with Ancestry.com, especially the quality of the census images. The indexes for the 1900 and 1910 censuses at Genealogy.com have been a big help but the images are not as good. I'm guessing that many of those "free" lookups you are getting are coming from kind-hearted souls with paid subscriptions. You're benefiting without realizing it. Additionally, through experimentation I've learned techniques for saving full census pages that are readable giving me the permanent source material I need to support my database information. Regarding the software issues mentioned by some, I have an old 450 megahertz machine that started out with Windows 98 First Edition and is now running Windows XP. No reformats. No corrupted programs. The only hardware problem was a CPU fan going out while still under warranty. My Best Buy extended warranty was good insurance. The guy came to the house and replaced it, no charge. Only thirty minutes down time. I have heard the horror stories of weeks in the shop. If that had happened to me and they didn't have it back in a week, I'd go get it and find somebody else who knows what they are doing. If they can fix it the same day for a work computer, they can certainly do it in a week for a home computer. To put things in perspective, I've bee doing genealogy for thirty years this coming July. I have done it the old snail-mail and microfilm way and the new e-mail, online way. I much prefer the latter. Now, Mike, although you haven't talked with me directly, you have it straight from the horse's mouth that commercial online enterprises do provide a good value. Happy Hunting! 3. Carol. In Texas you will want to get a free subscription to HeritageQuest through TexShare Databases, through you local library. The librarian will give you login info. It has every census film, some are indexed which are not indexed at ancestry.com (I have both) and they are sorted differently than ancestry's.
