The only clue that even comes to mind is an old archaeology habit. When we cover up any sort of dig we place a coin with that year's date at the bottom. I adopted this as a way of leaving a memento marking that I found (and cleaned, cleared as best I could that day) old old tombstones that are toppling, eroding and crumbling and may not easily be found again. Have any of you Shappee researchers out there learned much of the origins of Ashkenas (sp) Shappee, whom I've read was born 1749 Lorraine, France, and died 1797 Newtown, Tioga (Elmira, Chemung) County, NY? Ashkenas was a Chemung original who came along with early migrants from Ulster & Orange Counties. And, who were the earliest Jewish settler families in the tri-counties area, and when? I recently signed up to be on the e-mail list; however, I am getting repeated messages stating that my computer has deleted unsafe messages. When I return an e-mail to the sender, they tell me they have not e-mailed me. Today I received one from another person stating they were having the same problem. Hello - I've just started going through my mother's old photos. Tucked in an album was a tiny photo of a parade float. I think it's intended to depict a chicken and says "Hollenbecks" on it prominently. My mother grew up in Van Etten in the 1920s and stayed in the Chemung and Tioga (NY) county areas most of her life. Based on this and the old car in the below photo, I make a very uneducated guess of before 1950 for the date of the photo, and I'm wondering if it might be the Spencer Picnic parade.
