1. [PABRADFO] Another Tri-County update
2. OK you folks. There is very little activity on the site and no email all afternoon. I know that this means that all of you are out enjoying this wonderful weather while I am in here pounding out new pages for the site. I don't know if the cemetery crew is still at it or not. If they are they are all tired and sunburned. I am going OUT to take the dog for a walk and look at the green green grass. Joyce M. Tice

1. [PABRADFO] New at Tri-Counties Saturday 6:30 PM
2. Hi All, I have just uploaded two Orwell Township Cemeteries: Allis Hollow and Orwell Valley. These are both pre-1955 listings that were included in the Detty book on the History of Orwell. So, you can access these both from the Detty Table of Contents and from the Orwell Township page as regular cemetery listings. I'd still like both of these cemeteries read again for recent burials, but these are both excellent listings, although outdated. Thanks to Carol Jacobs for doing an excellent job typing them up for us. Joyce M. Tice Tri-Counti es Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. 1. [PABRADFO] Old Frenchtown Update - Correction and Apology
2. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice Today the cemetery "crew" read the Gore Cemetery of Sheshequin and then went to Old Frenchtown. I managed to find Gore after they had left but know from the shaving cream that they had been there. I caught up with them at Old Frenchtown Cemetery in Asylum. We were very fortunate that some of the neighbors of the area came over to introduce themselves. Their version of what has occurred there is very different from what we had thought we observed. The removal of the logs was the first step in an attempt to clean up the cemetery. The logging crew, while they did penetrate the cemetery to some degree with heavy logging equipment, used the machinery that cuts and lifts the tree out of the way rather than felling it into the cemetery. Had they done the latter, the damage would have been much greater. The landowner is held in very high repute in the neighborhood and the intentions in the logging were very much in the right direction. The neighbors were very concerned that any negative publicity should come to the man when none is deserved. The cemetery does indeed look very rough at this point, but that is part of the process of getting it in better shape and the marks from the equipment will be covered by new growth. Only one or two stones were actually damaged as far as we could tell. We also were fortunate to meet the landowner. He was there in the cemetery cleaning up some of the brush. I very much wish we had a crew to help him with that as he is an older gentleman and the work is very hard for him. The landowner told us that a listing had been done of the stones about 1979. I hope we can somehow locate a copy of that listing for the site as it will be much better than we can do now with so many of the stones fallen and covered with growth and leaves. I don't believe we ever held the landowner in any error, but we did have some apprehension about the way the logging company had handled it. It seems that they did try to get the correct permissions, but the local authorities and they were not quite certain what the proper procedures were. The logging company believed they had the right authorization to do this, and perhaps they did. I think the misunderstanding came about because of the conversations between our representative and the logging crew he encountered there when he went to start the cemetery last week. Just bad communication. We have all experienced that I am sure. We need to use this as a wake up call to get out and read the small and abandoned cemeteries, before even more of them do come to destruction and before they experience further natural deterioration. I think we have all seen so much deliberate damage to our small cemeteries that we overreacted on this one. It seems that the landowner has the same objective as we do and is not at fault in any way. He was very pleased that we were there to copy the stones and that we are interested in that cemetery. I hope that if any of you have forwarded any messages to other sources, that you will also forward this correction to the same places so that there is no further escalation in this matter. I will put up a revised explanation on the Old Frenchtown Cemetery page later this afternoon. The crew transcribed the stones they could get to easily, those on the surface, but much probing will have to be done to complete the job. I have to say that the job would have been easier if the shade had still been there. Today is a very hot July day in May. Dick McCracken and I also went to Gilbert Cemetery which is down through a horse pasture in Asylum. I photographed that and Dick will inscribe it later - probably already has by now. It's quite a journey from Asylum to my place. That is very small, just one family marker and five individual stones. We definitely want to nip in the bud any negative effects of this event. Everyone involved is working in the right direction and we want to keep it that way. Joyce M. 3. I agree completely with Janet! Here in Stamford, we had an old (and nearly forgotten, except by the neighbors) cemetery cleaned up by a young man and his troop as an Eagle Scout project. What those kids did was miraculous, and the project inspired a donated new cemetery sign, as well. Anne Pratt Slatin Stamford, NY "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. 2. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I have just uploaded the 1878 and 1879 newspaper abstracts of the Mansfield Advertiser to the TC Newspaper page of the site. You can reach this from the Online Research Library. A special treat is that each of the four new pages is illustrated with a photo of a person who had an event published that year. I am very pleased that the photo collection I have amassed over the past few years is extensive enough for me to do that. I have not been able to confirm that the pages uploaded successfully as the server seems to be down just now. I am off now to Bradford County to track down the Cemetery Reading Gang and take photos. 1. [PABRADFO] Volunteer organizations to clean cemeteries
2. Cole Goodwin
3. Dear members of the PABRADFO list, I commend Janet Ordway's suggestion of asking scouts to assist in a project to clean cemeteries. Perhaps I might add a little to it: The Young Men and Young Women organizations of most local wards (congregations) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would consider such a service project, too, and most would likely participate. Here in Maryland and in the District of Columbia, where I live and work, respectively, LDS youth groups and scout troops are cleaning cemeteries around the area, with the help of their adult counsellors, members of the church and their immediate families. I believe there is an LDS Church in Towanda. Someone might try approaching them (especially if someone on this list is LDS and a member of the Towanda Ward) regarding this service project. Just say another Latter-day Saint recommended them. Sincerely, Cole Goodwin Washington, D.C. >From: "janet ordway" <janeto@cyber-quest.com> >To: PABRADFO-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [PABRADFO] Old Cemeteries >Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 06:28:32 -0700 > >Might I suggest that when you come across a cemetery in need of a little >tender care (mowing, cleaning, etc) let your local scouts know. 3. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. My sources are the following....... There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of some 13000 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please see my website which is dedicated to those who passed through the gates of Andersonville. http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/index.html I want to thank those of you who are regular subscribers and tolerate my frequent postings.. 1. [PABRADFO] Old Frenchtown Cemetery
2. I just viewed the before and after photographs of the Old Frenchtown Cemetery. I am at a loss for words. How can those of us who live out of state help to put a stop to this type of desecration? I know that there was an effort going about a year ago - nationwide - to put a stop to the "Cemetery Art" fad that was in vogue. Art dealers and antique dealers were selling monuments, tombstones, etc. as art work. Of course, all of those lovely markers were stolen from cemeteries. I haven't heard anymore about the Cemetery Art lately, or the efforts to halt the sale of those cemetery items. Perhaps the powers to be that were involved with putting a stop to the fad could assist in stopping the desecration to the cemeteries in total. Sincerely, Marion Scherer
