My daughter and I are putting together a "family book" for her boyfriend's graduation from college. She has a photo of his father who died quite young and would like to include a poem. Does anyone know of a poem or such that would talk about a father who has died? I would appreciate any help or suggestions at all! Thanks! Jan in Lake Forest, CA
Hello list A few weeks back, there was a major discussion about the 2000 census and the long-form versus the short form. The problem is, I forget which list had the discussion. Could someone please remind me? I have a little something to add. Thanks, Dawn in South Bend
I'm sure the rain is appreciated but I hope you are not under that part of the weather map that is red or yellow. Last week we had one close hit of lightening - right on our service line. Burnt the lightening arrestor right off the pole, blew through the surge protectors, totally killed my computer and wounded my husband's. Also got the vcr, stereo, cd player, satellite receiver and dishwasher. Not a happy camper here. It has stopped raining here. Hope it stays dry so the Dairy Princess Parade and festivities can be held in Towanda. Have a great weekend! Lynn TAMLLM@aol.com wrote: > It's raining this morning and it's wonderful! Hi All, I have just updated the Lawrence Township page of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice to include the 1860 censuses for Lawrence Township and Lawrenceville Borough. I feel privileged to have both electricity and phone service today in spite of the rain that just will not stop, but AOL keeps kicking me off, so I am not even trying to do much online today. I am working on my own genealogy instead. That is probably all for today. Joyce M. Tice http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm
We sure could use some of that rain in Fl. everyday we hope for some. Charlyne

I received so many replies to my question about the lumber museum that I"m sending this thanks via the list. Thanks thanks thanks ! I just wrote them asking for info about the timber industry in that area...my family was heavily involved with timber and Phelps Dodge. Because my gr gr uncle, Daniel Dickinson went to Buenos Aires in 1839 for business, I'm pretty interested in timber in Tioga County---its appearing he was down there for Dodge and company and I'm trying to figure out if it was timber or mining that they were negotiating. I have quite a bit of info from Daniel's diary and family letters to him during that time period. Thanks everyone...I just got one step further on this family line. What is even worse than having your material used without permisson ( a distant cousin of mine sent in years of my research along with some of her own erroneous work) is a horrible sight I had the misfortune to witness several years ago. When the cds first came out I was up in Berks Co., PA doing some research on my husband's family and a librarian at the historical society was showing a couple how you could download all of these wonderful family trees into your own and have "instant" genealogies. Can you imagine all of the incorrect information being perpetuated forever because people are using this as a substitute for doing the work necessary to document? It reminds me of a complaint recently about work done by members of a certain religion who had done this work for religious reasons and not for public consumption - but then we dont want to go there again. It all comes down to education and this list is great for that :) Charmaine Riley Holley arkivemom@aol.com "May you ask the right question of the right person at the right time. " rootsweb sponsor
Please understand that my comments that follow are in no way meant to be disrespectful to anyone. They are intended to make you think. My wife and I have been serious, amateur genealogists for about twenty-six years. We have shared our information with people all over the world. We have seen some of it on the websites of distant relatives. We have never asked for or received any money for the use of our information. When we first bought Family Tree Maker and migrated our data to it about five years ago, I submitted our tree. I have never regretted this. Because of that single submission, we have been contacted by several dozen relatives who have helped us greatly extended our tree. When I submitted it, I believe there were about 10,700 names in it. Today, we have just passed the 63,000 mark. Every entry was done by hand. I tried merging once and ended up with quite a mess. Fortunately, I made a backup before that aborted attempt. I have purchased three Super Bundles from Family Tree Maker. In the third bundle, we noticed a significant amount of repeats so we haven't purchased any more and instead invested our money in other types of genealogical CD's. Most of the World Family Tree CD's contain approximately 3,000 trees. A super bundle of five costs $60. That works out to 0.4¢ per tree. For every 10,000 copies of my tree that Family Tree Maker sells, they take in $200 before expenses. Do you think they've sold 10,000 copies of my tree? I've gotten more than that out of GenForum alone. I realize Family Tree Maker provides GenForum at no cost to draw in more customers but what's wrong with that? If we work for ourselves, we expect to make a profit. If we work for someone else, we hope our boss makes a profit. We live in the richest nation in the world because of the profit motive. Why, day after day, do we hear complaining about someone making money? A couple of parting thoughts: How do you measure the value of all the contacts you have made because your information is out there for everyone to see? If you decide to write a book about your family and sell it, how much will you give to each of your cousins for their contribution? My 2¢ Ray Justus Chandler, AZ

I promise not to start trouble again, but if you have ever sent a GEDCOM file to anyone, that may well be your answer.
