Hi everyone, My mother and I will be going back to the Bradford Co area, specifically Troy, Canton, Towanda, LeRoy etc areas. We visited there in 1995 to do genealogy work. In were in the Troy area mostly. What places should we be sure to visit to do work in. My senior citizen mother is legally blind so I have to keep that in mind when we visit places. The Historical Socially Library - wasn't open unfortunately when we were there. Let me know of any places to be sure to visit for genealogical purposes. Please pass any current addresses, telephone no's, email etc, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bobbie [Speir] Jarvinen - @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ \ / | \ | / \|/ \ | / \ | / \|/ \| .... .. . The following excerpts appeared in an article in the Wyalusing Rocket, today: www.rocket-courier.com Welles Family Reunion Being Held 80 descendants of Frank Welles and Anna Thomas/ Shadowbrook Resort, Tunkhannock, PA/ July 5. They will visit the public libraries in Towanda and Wyalusing, both started with funds donated by Frank Welles. Born in Athens, PA in 1854, Francis R. Welles grew up in Towanda, graduated from the U. of Rochester and worked for Western Electric, serving mainly in France and Belgium, where he opened his first telephone factory in Europe in 1879. Anna Thomas, daughter of Thomas Thomas, Pastor of the Presbyterian Churches in Rushville and Stevensville (PA), was a dear friend of Frank's sister Emma and scandalized the Victorian folks of Bradford County by sailing with Emma and her mother to Antwerp, Belgium, where she promptly married Frank Welles. The marriage led to a long and rich relationship, with residence in France and retirement in California, producing two daughters and two sons,<snip>.
Hi all friends and guests of <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> I am forwarding a tip from AOL. It is pretty much what I have pointed out on the list before, but it does good to repeat it. Joyce M. Tice When Web Sites Don't Load Many Web sites simply can't handle all of the requests they receive during peak usage times. From 2 PM - 10 PM, millions of people try to contact Web sites whose servers can't manage the load. Which is why, on occasion, you can't get through. Fortunately, people come and go from Web sites all the time, so if you can't connect at first, it's a good idea to try again. A good rule of thumb is to try back three times before giving up. You can do this by hitting the reload button at the top of your Web window. This tells your AOL Web browser to try to connect with the Web site again. Wait a few seconds between each try, and with good luck, you'll get through. If your patience doesn't pay off, try back again later in the evening or early in the morning when the traffic is likely to have died down.

Audrey, Where were your Deckers living at the time that the NA became part of the family? The Northeastern Woodlands Indians of our research area, at the time of contact until the mid-1500's, were of two primary language groups: Iroquoian and Algonkian. If you know the extended family group (they used to be called "tribes," I may be able to give you some direction. As an aside... I have an association and undefined relationship with the Deckers of Durell, Asylum Twp, Bradford Co, PA. I also have Mohawk (Iroquoian) in my ancestry (Ots-Tosh (aka Alstock, Olstock) Hartell, dau of Jacques Hartell whose wife was Mohawk). She married Jacques Cornelius VanSlyck of Canajoharie, Montgomery Co, NY. During the 70's and 80's I was a Regional Conservation Archaeologist attached to the staff of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. My specialty was the Northeast Woodlands American Indian. Dick McCracken Towanda, PA -- Plan Your Work... Work Your Plan...
I got a new (1999) Kid's internet book with bookmark CD. The first site up is indian languages. Now if I could just figure out what kind of NA the Decker's were. I could learn "my" native language. ===== Sister Blue Rose http://www.egroups.com/subscribe.cgi/ER4YTtypeO http://www.broadcast.com/books/scifi/strangerinastrangeland_981.html http://www.egroups.com/subscribe/ZellRavenheart2K http://www.etour.com/default.asp?associd=aff18605 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I know that there are several Shoemaker researchers on the list - here is an obit for Moses Shoemaker - an ancestor of Col. Henry W. Shoemaker's. If you are related please let me know. I have a nice article about him that my great grandfather wrote. The obit is from the Sussex-L mailing list and it is with that list owner's permission that I pass it along: MOSES SHOEMAKER Moses Van Campen SHOEMAKER died at his home near Dingman's Ferry, Pike Co, PA on Tues. morning Sep 18th aged 76 years, of general debility. He was born in Walpack township, Sussex co, NJ but removed to Pike county in middle life and lived there for some 10 years until he died. He was the son of Daniel Shoemaker, who married a VAN CAMPEN of Wallpack. The deceased was twice married, his first wife being the daughter of Jessie BELL and a sister of Benton BELL, who lives in Sandyston township, and his second wife being Sarah HURSH, sister of the late Benjamin HURSH of Sandyston. Mr. Shoemaker leaves fours sons and seven daughters, all of whom survive him, viz.; Daniel, now living in Dakota; Jesse of Strousdburg, PA; Edward of Passaic, NJ; George of southern NJ; Patience, wife of John LAMB of Portland, PA; Mary, wife of George DECKER of Stroudsburg, PA; Jane,w ife of Isaac WESTBROOK, of Sandyston; Ida, wife of Harry BENSLEY, residing at the homestead; and Zera, Emma and Edna. Mr. Shoemaker was an upright man and a good citizen and was highly esteemed by a large number of friends besides relatives and family connections. His death will be regretted by all who knew him. Hi All, Today's second upload is another diary, the 1871 Diary of Chattie Fuller of Ridgebury. Chattie's 1870 diary was added to the site a month or so ago, so here is its sequel. It also includes a partial year diary of Chattie's little sister Julia. This diary is particularly poignant and emotional as it includes the death of Chattie's older married sister and the conflict with the brother-in-law over custody and care of the sister's young daughter. It gives us a look at the difficult episodes of life that are so often shielded away from us. It is my belief that history should be presented as it is and not sugar coated. In our generation we have to deal with many difficult issues, and it is important for us to understand that none of our problems are new or unique or in any way unusual. Our thanks to the submitter for allowing us to print this diary in its entirety. You may reach the Diary collection from Box 31 B of the Online Research Library of <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> Rootsweb seems to have its server up and running again, so you should be able to look at both new diaries of today. Joyce M. Tice
