    1. [PABRADFO] Fries Cemetery/McClelland family
    2. montrose
    3. Hi Paul, I will comment on the Fries Cemetery and the McClelland family. Actually, 1842 is not the earliest date of a marker in the cemetery. The earliest date is Andrew McClelland who died 1836. This was six years before the death of his mother Anna Maria Weller (Anna was most likely of Dutch or German descent and hence the middle name for that time period and she and her husband were married in a Dutch Reformed Church). John McClelland her husand died 16 Nov 1821 and may well have been buried somewhere in a cemetery prior to the beginning of the Fries Cemetery. I am very interested in learning where you obtained the information about a flood as there are some other early settlers of that area that I do not know where they are buried. The earliest cemetery in that locale is the Morgan Cemetery in Austinville, not far away, and many early settlers are buried there. There were four deaths in 1842 in the Fries Cemetery so it certainly would seem to have been established by that date and perhaps by 1836 unless Andrew McClelland was reinterred from elsewhere. My belief is that the Fries Cemetery is a natural glacier mound. It has been awhile since I took Junior High science and the name of these types of mounds has escaped me, but they are quite common, and I know of no instance in this area for that time period of any early white settlers hauling dirt to make that large of a mound. Sandy Cotter at cotters4@home.com is also researching the McClelland family. Below is the McClelland family information: John McClelland b. July 1754, related to be a native of Ireland, served in the American Revolution, m. perhaps Jan 1784 in the Shawangunk Dutch Reformed Church in Ulster County, New York, Anna Maria Weller b. 25 May 1760 (pension ). Most of their children were perhaps b. at Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York. Settled in Columbia township perhaps 1807-8 on Sugar Creek west of Columbia Cross Roads. Application for pension (W2833) dated 2 June 1821 d. 16 Nov 1821. Pioneer and Patriot Families by Heverly indicates he was 62 at the time of his death, but if he was b. July 1754 he would have been 67. Widow's application dated 2 Nov 1838 d. 24 July 1842. Place of interment unknown, but perhaps in the Fries Cemetery near their settlement where other family members are buried including son Andrew who predeceased his mother. Dates of birth for children from pension application of Anna Maria. 1. Hieronimus McClelland b. 1 May 1784 enlisted in the War of 1812 and is related to have been killed in battle July 1815, single. 2. Martha McClelland b. 28 Nov 1785 m. 3. Hi Alice, I have not researched information regarding Phineas Helme, but I have researched information regarding Floyd S. Helme b. 30 Mar 1815 son of Phineas Helme and Betsy Smith. Floyd S. Helme and his family resided in Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania just over the state line from Southport and hence my interest. I have consulted two noted resources regarding Revolutionary Soldiers in Chemung County. One is the C. B. Payne NSDAR list of 1925 and the other is the 1975 list by Miss Isabel Ridall. Neither cite Phineas Helme as a Revolutionary Soldier buried in Fitzsimmons. In 1968 Miss Edith Carpenter made a notation that Mrs. Hugh Staver indicated that Phineas was a Revolutionary Soldier and buried at Fitzsimmons. However, not to discredit Mrs. Staver, but the credibilty of her work and that of her husband is in question, which I will not go into detail here. I copied the markers in Fitzsimmons Cemetery in 1979 and the wife of Phineas Helme is buried there and her marker reads: Mary wife of Phineas Helme died Aug 27, 1827 81y 7m 14d. The Helme name does not appear on the 1788 survey, which may indicate they came after that date. I would suggest seeing where family members were in the 1790 and 1800 census. I would also suggest seeing if Mary Helme filed for a widow's pension which would give you valuable information. The National Archives is notoriously slow in responding to these requests and a letter to the Onondaga Public Library at the Galleries on Salina Street in Syracuse will produce quicker results as they have all Revolutionary pension records on microfilm and will make a copy and forward to you. Have you checked for a Helme family file at the Chemung County Historical Society? Below is the information I have on the Floyd S. Helme family and a George Helme family. Floyd S. Helme b. 30 Mar 1815 son of Phineas Helme and Betsey Smith of Southport, Chemung County, New York m. Betsey C. Jones daughter of Philo Jones and Jane H. Carpenter of Seeley Creek, town of Southport. Mar 1856 daughter of Norman S. and Jeanette Davey of Wells and they resided at Seeley Creek, town of Southport, Chemung County, New York. George d. 19 Jan 1917 61y near Pine City, New York survived by widow and brother, Wilson of Webb Mills, New York, buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, New York (obituary). 3. I am researching the lineage of Christopher Helme. I am decendend from him through his son William and his great-grandson Phineas Helme. My Phineas of Cornwall, (the first, as I call him); was born in 1723, in Brookhaven, Orange County, N.Y. He married Mary Weisner. Then Mary Moffat. Some records indicate that he died June 25, 1798, in Blooming Grove, Orange County, N.Y. The records further state that he is buried in Cove Church, Bloomington Grove there. Now here is my problem. It also states that Phineas is buried in the Fitzsimmons Cemetery, in Southport, in Chemung County, N.Y. (I live in that County). It lists him as a Revolutionary War Patriot also. Now in the cemetery are other Helme members, but not one there that is identifiable at all for my Phineas Helme. There is no marker in that cemetery for him either. But there is a book in print called: Abstracts of Graves of Revolutionary War Patriots, Vol. 2, that states that he IS buried there definitely. There is a slate headstone a few feet away from the main family plot that has lost its front. It might or might not be my grave in question. Man has been cruel to the cemetery over the years. A nearby intersection at Maple Ave. and Ceder Streets, have led to various motor vehicle accidents ending up in the middle of the cemetery. This I see has led to the destruction of even more stones than Mother Nature. At least one-third of the stones in the cemetery are gone or totally unreadable. Don't get me wrong, the cemetery is beautiful and wonderfully kept up!!! A great job done by the Town of Southport, N.Y. There is Phineas Helme,(the 2nd) who is also in Fitzsimmons Cemetery. That was his son, along with various other family members. His Birth: Jan. 24, 1785, Death: Nov. 29, 1858. And I have even found my 3rd Phineas Helme, if you can believe that! He is the grandson of my 1st Phineas of course!! He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, on Walnut Street, Elmira, Chemung Co., N.Y. Has anyone out there done research on this Helme line? Can someone help find out for sure where my Rev. War Patriot is at? I have tremendously enjoyed reading every "letter" that the list has passed along. You all have great interests, stories, and heart to doggedly do all the research that is still new to me. With all your unknown help, I am learning something new every day! My best to all, and I apologize for the length of this first letter! It won't happen again. With Regards, Alice M. Hartford (technically, the little ole town of "Big Flats"!!) Elmira, N.Y.

    2. I have a few questions about some rural cemeteries in western Bradford County: Checkerville Cemetery A note on the Tri-Counties cemetery page for Berrytown Cemetery says "Most graves believed to have been moved to Checkerville in South Creek Township". Does anyone know when the gravestones/coffins were moved from Berrytown, and the reason for the move? The distance between the cemeteries is about 2 miles. Columbia Cross Roads My 4th great-grandparents, John and Anna (Weller) McClelland, were buried in a Columbia Cross Roads cemetery that was reportedly washed away in a flood, in the mid-1800s. Does anyone know where the old cemetery was located or when the flood occurred? The earliest recorded burial at the nearby Fries Cemetery is 1842. Fries Cemetery This cemetery consists of a large mound of earth about 100 feet long, 30 feet wide and 10 feet high which is a very unusual shape for a cemetery. The large mound is in the middle of a flat field, so the earth was apparently brought in from another area. Does anyone know the reason for the unusual shape of Fries Cemetery? Paul Newell

    3. Perhaps this will explain the then existing DAR Protocol. The Name in the first column is the husband's SURNAME -- Jones In 1926 a DAR Yearbook would have the members name listed as simply Mrs. John Famous Jones or as Jones, Mrs. John Famous (Mary Patriot Jones) or a similar form. Women were publicly referred to by their Husband's name and many Chapters still use this in newspapers and other printed form. Often a list of women attending any community meeting were listed in the newspaper as "Those attending were Mesdames: John F. Jones, Timothy Williams, V. R. Smith," etc.. Current publishing guidelines have changed and she would now be Mary Patriot Jones with no reference to her married state or husband's name. In the second column you have her given and maiden name .. Mary Patriot... with the husbands given names or initials in bracket Thus you have Jones, Mary Patriot (Mrs. John Famous) We might now see her listed by DAR Chapters as Mary Patriot Jones (Mrs. John Famous Jones) The last column is ,of course, the Patriot Ancestor the member descends from. I live in a small rural area so I put in my address and it brought up all the roads in my area and pointed out my place. Next I went to PA and entered Sabinsville which as every one knows is not another Pittsburgh and it showed it with all roads, highways, railroads, rivers etc etc. I am impressed. It does exactly what I need. To find a town where an ancestor lived and be able to compare to where it is located from other towns. It is also upgraded by going to their internet. Beside all that you get: listings for 409,000 restaurants 68,000 Hotels and Motels 41,000 Gas stations 1,200 Interstate America rest stops 78,000 ATMs and Banks 41,000 Colleges and Universities 11,800 Cinemas and theatres 7,700 Museums 9,000 + Woodalls campgrounds and more. And I haven't even read the whole thing yet. Harold

    3. Here is a wonderful source of information which includes some Bradford County residents during a period when Bradford Co. was part of Luzerne County. The URL is below. It is part of the Luzerne County GenWeb site. The 1790 census of Luzerne County contains Wyalusing, Wysox, etc., Twps. of what is now Bradford County. Henry Tuttle was my 5th gg father. He was born in Wysox Twp, abt 1764, married 1792, Mary STROPE (dau of Sebastian Strope and Lydia VanVALKENBURG, first settlers in Wysox Twp). Henry deserted his family in 1809, divorced in 1816. Henry's father, also Henry Tuttle (1733-1820), came to Bradford County with or shortly after Sebastian Strope and settled in Wysox Twp at the mouth of Wysox Creek. He died 1820 in Forty Fort, Luzerne County. His will is in the Luzerne County Recorder's office; it states that he was of Kingston (Luzerne Co), PA, 1820; Book A, page 229. The following newspaper clipping certainly does not portray the younger Henry in the best of circumstances. It seems he was a true rogue! However, what a wonderful physical description. It is an old book and wearing out and it has occured to me that there must be a program for the computer that will do the same thing only faster and better. I need one that shows all the counties and hopefully the townships as well and a good listing of all the towns and cities. If anyone can recommend such a program for me I would appreciate it. I understand that Office Max has one called "Street Address" that will do the same thing but I am unsure of it. Any help appreciated. Harold Hooper

    3. Thanks to your latest newspaper abstracts online I was able to locate a relative who unfortunately died at a tender age of 4 years--scarlet fever in 1880..There is a strong possibility the great grandparents returned to their beloved Tioga Co. after 20 years in Elmira and research has them living into the 1920's. Is there anyway I can locate death notices for these elusive gr. grandparents? Another thought about these hearty ancestors of ours..The heavy clothing that the women wore must have been unbearable in the heat of summer..No doubt they used large quantities of toilette water--Enjoyed the photos of these pioneers. Thank you for sharing them with this fan of this particular web site.. Beverly
