    3. Hi all: Thanks for the help on Orange. Now I find there are lots of Oranges and Caleb Jones. My next question may be easier. On January 02, 1859 Kaura R, Simmons married Charles Stiles. Charles died in Wysox, PA Aug 1868. Anyone got any information on either of them? Thanks: Bill Stiles, Charlotte, NC

    3. My mother died in '91 and when we got the death certificates back (ordered several copies), there were 5 mistakes on there, and MY FATHER was the informant. He was, however, hard of hearing and if he didn't understand something he wouldn't ask what you said. So when I discovered the mistakes, I contacted the proper authorities (Ark.) and was able to get them amended. -Fortunately!!! But yes, they DO HAPPEN! 3. My husband's great grandfather Peter McAvoy lived in Potter Brook around 1900. Where would I find any school records? Was there a Potter Brook High School? Any help for that area would be greatly appreciated. Also thank you for the information from the Wetmore Bible. My great grandfather was the Jacob Jenkins who married Lucy Champney. He married Rodelphia Martin about 10 years later. She was my great grandmother. It seems both my husband and I have roots in Tioga County. Alexis (Jenkins) McAvoy

    2. My daughter's birth certificate says her name is Maurice Christine. Go figure. We were not allowed to change the original document, only amend it, like when a name is changed, so now she has to have the original with another paper stapled to it that says her name was CHANGED from Maurice to Maurie. Kinda irritated me, since her name was never Maurice to start out with, and I kinda thought the health dept. should have people working for them who could tell a female name from a male name. I know the name Maurie is a little unusual, but Maurice is not, and nobody would EVER name their kid Maurice Christine (see, the subject STILL gets me fired up!!!). Names are always questionable. My great-aunt changed her own name apparently from Opal Sue to Opal Frances. It seemed that a couple of generations of that particular family were unhappy with what their mothers (or fathers) named them. My great-grandfather changed his last name when he came to America from Italy at age 11 without his parents. We ordered his death certificate hoping to find out what the Italian name was, and his second wife had given his father the same last name as he had. She might not have known it, or may have not wanted to give an Italian name. We did figure it out through the LDS site and some vague memories my aunt had. My husband does not know his mother's parents names, or his father's mother's name. As far as cause of death is concerned, that sometimes is a little misleading even today. My Grandmother died as the result of a massive stroke, but since she lingered in a coma for a week, the cause of her death was recorded as respiratory failure. 1. [PABRADFO] Errors on Official Records
    2. Catherine Madigan
    3. Thought I'd add our family discrepancy. My grandparents gave birth to their 7th daughter, birth at home, 1916. While mygrandmother was showing the new baby to the 6 other little girls upstairs and excitely talking about her name - Grace -, my grandfather was downstairs giving the official info for a birth certificate to the Dr. 18 years later, Grace went to get a copy of her birthcertificate, only to find that the only one on record was for a Catherine. She came home with this distressing news - only to be told by her Dad, Oh that's you allright , I named you after my Aunt Kate. This story has been a source of amusement for our family for years. But also reveals much about the times they lived in. In defense of my grandfather though, with all the hubbub and chatter of all the little girls, he just became confused as to which name my grandmother really had decided upon and they had many a laugh about it while they waited for Grace to discover their miscommunication. So it can't all be blamed on those recorders of official information. Cathy

    2. Read very recently that the death certificate is generally made out by the undertaker and is only signed by the doctor, so don't always blame the doctor. My mother was born in Mass. and was to be named Alice Mae. Her father went to the town office to register the birth. 65 years later when she had to get birth certificate she found she was named Alice Mary -after his mother ! Ralph Weller

    1. [PABRADFO] Misinformation on "Official" Documents
    2. Hi All, I am glad this subject has been introduced on the Tri-County mail list. I have seen any number of "Official" documents with wrong information. My own aunt's birth certificate has the wrong surname for her mother. Doctor's made mistakes then, too and may not have filled out the paperwork when the child was delivered and tried to remember it later. A woman in our neighborhood (the one I grew up in and on which my research centers) who is now long gone, but whom I knew all my life was Charlotte Updyke. In the birth records at the court house, a child was born to her parents on the same date as she but with a completely different first and middle name. Either the parents changed their name or the doctor who recorded it got it all wrong, maybe switched with some other child he delivered that year (They submitted their listings annually). The most common error on the death certificates was cause of death. This was a function of limited medical knowledge at the time. A friend of mine found the death certificate of my elusive ancestors Amanda (maybe Sutton) who married Philip Tice. Her parents are not listed on it meaning that even her children, who provided information for the death certificate, did not know the names of their own grandparents. I have seen many cases of the wrong cemetery listed, perhaps because that was not fully determined at the time the doctor did the death certificate. Take nothing for granted even on "official records." Read my Warnings and Disclaimers page on the site which is about the importance of the researchers task in confirming the accuracy of any sources. Also, there is a test version of a frames version of the site. You can reach it by clicking on Enki's (little dog) face on the main page (Front Door) of < A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm">Tri-County Genealogy Site of Joyce M. Tice</A> The advantages to it are that it gives me the opportunity to keep links to the essential sections and resources of the site visible at all times on all pages. The disadvantage is that it further reduces the size of the main window. I have a large high resolution screen, but for some users it may have disadvantageous effect. I welcome feedback on that design at JoyceTice@aol.com Joyce M. Tice

In one case it was a gold mine. Instead of listing the deceased mother"s as Elliott (per civil war records) the mother was listed as Manley. It turned out that Manley was a grandmother of the deceased. It opened up another generation for me. So look at the certificates well since although it may seem way out of line, it just may be what you need. 1. [PABRADFO] Rootsweb Merger w/ MyFamily
    2. Hi All, I see that the announcement has made it to the mailing list before any of us has had a chance to evaluate what it means. Rootsweb has assured those of us who rent low cost space from them that nothing will change. I hope that is true. I'd prefer that we keep discussion off the mail list as it is not anything any of us can do anything about. I have major concerns, also, as I can not rent the amount of space my site uses from any other organization at anything approaching the low price I pay at Rootsweb. Long term, this is no surprise. It was only a matter of time. I was asked a few months ago what I thought the future of genealogy on the Internet would be and I replied that sooner or later the sites that survive will be those with the revenues to support them. As much as we all like the volunteer nature of what has been done, it is unrealistic to think that people will be able to cover the costs of large scale development out of their own volunteer pockets indefinitely. Brian and Karen, who founded Rootsweb and invested large amounts of money in developing its technology so that we site developers could have low cost space have incurred tremendous financial losses. The people who use their many resources for "free" did not voluntarily send in the donations to make it possible for them to keep going. They were idealistic to assume that the grateful public would recognize that the technology that supports their operation costs money and would willingly chip in to help with the costs. 10% of the people who watch public TV contribute money. It is certainly much less for Rootsweb. Most people, and I hate to say this, are takers and not givers or sharers and that is what this merger is about. Many of you will not like to hear this, but if you are not contributing to the development of voluntary resources on the Internet either financially or by chipping in on the work, then you are part of the reason such things fail. I am very hopeful that the structure Rootsweb has created can continue as it has but realistically nothing that is "Free" can last forever. Someone pays the price and we all have limited resources to do it. My intention is to continue to develop <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm">Tri-County Genealogy Site of Joyce M. We have just gone through a rather lengthy discussion of copyright protection and since Rootsweb has ALWAYS protected the information submitted to it's sites, and myFamily does not (once you upload your trees, they show up on a CRdom in a short time-I've found my own unsubmitted information with the errors I know I had in them and they were on a rom that I bought from them) This makes me think that nothing is sacred. I hope Joyce checks this out for all of the work that has gone into her fantastic site. I'd hate to see all of that work destroyed by commercialism. Hopefully, I'm all wet. Acquires Number Two Genealogy Site, RootsWeb.com MyFamily.com, Inc. Increases Portfolio of Sites to Extend Its Position as the Number One Online Source for Families and Family History Research San Francisco, CA – June 21, 2000 – MyFamily.com, Inc., the leading online family network, announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire RootsWeb.com, the oldest and largest free community genealogy site. RootsWeb.com, a San Francisco, California company, is among the most popular genealogy sites on the Internet. With more than 149 million page views in the month of May 2000, RootsWeb.com was second among genealogy Web sites only to Ancestry.com's over 187 million page views, according to Nielsen NetRatings combined home and work statistics. With the acquisition MyFamily.com, Inc. will add RootsWeb.com to its portfolio of Web sites, which includes MyFamily.com, FamilyHistory.com, as well as Ancestry.com, collectively recognized as the premier Internet destination for families. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Following the acquisition, the RootsWeb.com site will continue to be free to all users and will maintain its own unique Web site address, www.RootsWeb.com. The acquisition by MyFamily.com, Inc. will provide the RootsWeb.com site the financial backing to expand its focus on preserving, sharing, and exchanging family history research. As part of the MyFamily.com network of sites, the RootsWeb.com site will expand with additional technology tools, increased family research content and a greater range of genealogical resources. With genealogy as one of the most popular hobbies online, the addition of RootsWeb.com extends MyFamily.com's offerings in genealogy research and further enhances its leading position in genealogy research and family services on the Internet. This new combination creates a central destination for the genealogy community online, offering something for every family historian. This move comes at a time when a recent Pew Internet and American Life Study reported that 54 million people belong to a family in which someone used the Internet to research their family history or genealogy. "This is truly a winning combination for both organizations and for the millions of users who make up our audiences," said Greg Ballard, CEO of MyFamily.com. "We believe that we are in an excellent position to expand our offering to consumers through a number of acquisitions like this one. There is no question that consumers are using the Internet to connect to their families, and we plan to put in place an aggressive program that will enable us to have the most complete network for families online." Strategically, the acquisition of RootsWeb.com will provide MyFamily.com with an increase in advertising real estate and an expanded audience reach, and will provide increased transaction and commerce opportunities. In addition, it will increase exposure to Ancestry.com's free and premium subscription offerings. Currently more than 600 million records and 2,500 databases are online at Ancestry.com, with over half of the data freely accessible to all Web users. MyFamily.com, Inc. generates revenues from diversified streams, including advertising/sponsorships, subscriptions and commerce among its network of sites. "RootsWeb.com fits well with the MyFamily.com vision of creating the largest and most active online resource for families and family history research," said Dr. Brian Leverich, founder of RootsWeb.com. "This agreement will expand both the number of RootsWeb.com users and content contributors. At the same time, we have ensured that RootsWeb.com content, services, mailing lists and Web pages will remain free, while allowing the site to provide more functionality and resources to a larger audience as a result of our being part of the MyFamily.com network." As part of its ongoing commitment to the genealogical community, MyFamily.com, Inc. will continue to support volunteer, non-profit organizations such as The USGenWeb Project (www.USGenWeb.org), Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG.rootsweb.com), The Free Births, Marriages, and Deaths Project (FreeBMD.rootsweb.com), and other groups that provide free genealogical content. 3. Is anyone on the list researching Hezekiah Darling? If so here is what the stone read. Hezekiah Darling Died Dec.21, 1872 Aged 66 yrs & 5 mos. This cemetery also consisted of mostly Loveland's but had several Bixby and Neal surnames as well. The location would be Windham Summit area. Very close to sitting on the boarder of N.Y. state. Please email me privately if you would like me to take a look for any of your ancestors. Carol J. cc11ab@epix.net
