From there go to "Family History Centers." There will be an alphetized list of locations, and when you click on your choice there will be a list of Family History Centers in that location. Or copy the three and a half lines of gibberish at the top of this note into your browser bar. It should take you to the Pennsylvania list. 3. My great grandfather, James J. Gorham conveyed two lots in LeRaysville to his wife, Mary Angeline (Burns) for $1,000, fewer than five months before his death on 8 SEP 1894. He had been ill for quite some time and probably sensed that he was near the end of his life. My question is why did he feel it necessary to take these measures? I can only assume that he wanted to ensure that she held this property after his demise and didn't trust existing laws to accomplish that end. Wealthy Ann burried in the Universalist Cemetery in Sheshequin 1/2/1854 at age 87. Also, I have just typed out (from all that old fashioned script) her application for a widow's pension. 1. Re: [PABRADFO] Owning Property
    2. The guardianship issue is interesting. Isn't it true that when a father died that another male was usually appointed guardian of the children, even when the mother of the children was still living? I had an ancestor who was a land speculator in the 1850s and 1860s in Ohio. There is deed upon deed recorded for him in the courthouse there, and in every instance, his wife was taken aside. I wonder what would have happened if she would have said she was not acting under her own free will. Another thing that interested me was to find in one of my ancestor's wills that he had had a prenuptial agreement with his second wife in the 1860s. She didn't receive any of his property upon his death (I'm assuming she had her own, but have never checked it out). This guy's property had all been bought with money he and his first wife had received from selling land that the first wife inherited. Land records are some of the best genealogical resources you can find. If the kids aren't mentioned by name in the will, you can often selling them selling property. It seems to me that I have a copy of an 1850s PA land sale where ALL the spouses of both the sons and daughters of the deceased were mentioned. Debbie

    2. Seems this practice of questioning women when land was being sold goes a long way back. One of the interesting things I have come across has been in wills left by the husband, where he left his wife her clothes. How thoughtful. I did find something which I thought was unusual when I finally found info about my husband's grandmother. She died in 1894 in Cook Co, TX when Ed's Mother was 9 years old. She left a will and her husband had to go to court to be appointed guardian of the children. The land was in her name - probably since it had come from her Father. Any way, I certainly didn't expect to find a will for her. We had been trying to prove who his grandmother was - since her husband re-married and the only name the children knew was the step-grandmother. Of course none of us ever thought to ask his Mother who her Mother was. Would have saved a lot of time, but that's how it goes. Betty Gregory

    2. Hi Laura, You present some very interesting issues and it is true that women could vote even way back in the nineteenth century in regional or local elections. Believe it or not, women voted in Mainesburg in the nineteenth century. In many of the new states or land holdings, women voted and both owned and controlled property, example: Kansas. you are correct that the laws concerning women varied in time and place and can't really be treated in a broad brush stroke. Once again,. this is well documented and many resources exist on the subject.
