Bill, Not only was there a poor house in Breesport, but it still stands. It is located on the Breesport-North Chemung Road across from the Breesport Baptist Church. There is also a burial ground there, but graves are unmarked. Does anyone know if a list of burials exist? Jean, I have many Beaches in the Glenwood Cemetery in Troy and Hilton Cemetery in West Burlington. I don't recognize you other names, but I am from John Beach one of three Beaches coming to this country in ~ 1637. Richard and Thomas Beach also have relations living in the area. Possibly Eugene Beach, Jr. might have it in his records. He is the guru of the Beaches and has thousands of Beaches in his research. Contact him at EugeneB@aol.com . Regards, John H. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I have spent the ENTIRE day putting more of the Bradford County Veterans pages online. I am up to page 86 and well into the database at this point AND I have a terrible pain in the back of my neck and my back from such a long stretch at the keyboard. The response to the Veteran's page has been much less than I expected considering the magnitude of this undertaking. This includes extensive information about 8500 Bradford County Veterans and their records and burials. The counts on the page are very low. Not even half the people on the mailing list who receive announcements of the additions to the site have even looked at the opening page of this massive work. I have received ONE, count it, One note of feedback since I started putting it online. The sad thing is that so many of you are searching desperately for information and ignoring a major new resource that is waiting for you. You can reach this very significant new publication from Box 12C of the Online Research Library of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I have had two notes about the Maccabees today and so I expect to have that figured out soon. In the meantime I found another Maccabee marker in the Whitney Point Cemetery that said L.O.T.M. instead of K.O.T.M. and fortunately got a note since explaining it. That's all for a while. I have to go for a walk and get this crick out of my neck. Joyce M. Tice
Hi Group. One of the list members wrote me that there was a Crippen Hotel at one time - probably either in Tioga or Potter Co. Does anyone have any info about this. She seemed to remember that she had seen a picture of it on a postcard. If anyone has any info about this I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks Betty Gregory Edmond, OK
Moses Calkins and Thankful Stevens are buried in Hilton Cemetery on Route 6. Their son James Calkins (Calkin on marker) is buried in Judson Hill Cemetery on Judson Hill Road in Wells Township (closest hamlet is Mosherville). James is the only Calkins marker in the cemetery. His date of death on marker differs from your date. There is much information on the Calkins family on page 247 of "Pioneer and Patriot Families of Bradford County, Pennsylvania 1770-1800" vol 1. There are many Calkins descendants in the Troy area. J. Kelsey Jones ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert C. Hi All, I have not had time for any site maintenance this week but hope to do some catch up this weekend. During the week I have been doing my usual traveling here and there on business (40,000 miles of it in the last year) and stopped at quite a few cemeteries along the way in search of the plaques and flagholders that are my latest object of scrutiny and photography. Once you start looking at these things, it is amazing the diversity that exists. In addition to the military ones, I have found them for Organ Donors, Letter Carriers, State Police, Lots and lots of fire department, fraternal organizations of all kinds, Railroad workers, ministers, scoutmasters, grange members and on and on. I have collected photos of upwards of 250 different plaque/flagholder markers just in this week and have them all organized in a computerized slide show. I include color variations as differences, so may have similar plaques in a variety of colors. As I present more of the Bradford County Veterans burials pages, I'll be showing you the diversity of the military markers in my photo collection. I was privileged to meet site guest Marilyn DEWEY Adams this week on her visit north from Florida. In fact, she accompanied me on a WET tour of Woodlawn on Thursday in my quest for new markers. It is always a treat to meet people with whom I have corresponded for years and Marilyn is every bit as optimistic and high spirited in person as in her notes. Also, I have a few of the markers that I do not know what they are about so I am asking the mail list subscribers (you) to tell me what you know about them. The first is an organization called K.O.T.M. or the Maccabees. I assume this means Knights of the Maccabees. I found three old and very rusty markers, all different from each other, locally. The burials they accompanied were 1904, 1919 and 1934. The dictionary definition of Maccabees made this sound like possibly a Jewish thing, but that does not fit with the demographics of the community where I found them - Virgil NY. Another is Degree of Pocohontos with a shield and bird. The bird makes me think this might be a Rebecca insignia. Any ideas? Another mystery is an eagle above a shield. I have found three of these in various places in NYS, all slightly different. Two of them say Camp 93. The other is very rusty and says just Camp No. (and no number given) Another is a very rusty marker that says Women's Relief Corps 1883 and in the center W.A.C. Can anyone identify this organization for me and give me some history on it. Another real mystery that I can make no sense of is a large rusty flagholder plaque. The outline may be a large C or just a curve. There are two large stylized initials inside that may be A R. At the top it says Bacon Port 53 and below it says Utica NY. I do not have a clue what this is about. I found it in Newark Valley. I will eventually be putting up some pages on my latest "collection" with explanations of what they are. For those of us who spend so much time in cemeteries, it is time we start understanding the "language" and these markers are certainly part of the language available to us. Joyce M. Dear List: If anyone is researching Edward Musselman, I have a History text book that belonged to him. It was published in 1853. It's called "Hale's History-The United States". He wrote his name all over it and in the back he wrote " Overton, Bradford, Penna". I picked it up at a sale in Mehoopany last summer, so I thought perhaps a relative would like to have it.
