    1. [PABRADFO] Old Saying
    2. I guess my grandfather used to have an old saying regarding something to the effect that if you wanted to keep apples over the winter you had to pick them before the September sun got on them. My Aunt Eloise told me the saying last year and I stupidly did not write it down. She passed away in October at the age of 92. Does anybody have any ideas what the saying might be? Thank you for any help. Marlene Andes

    1. [PABRADFO] Cemeteries question
    2. Does anyone know if the State of Pennsylvania would be more inclined to help preserve an old cemetery if it also contains an old Seneca Indian burying ground?? I reside in Florida, so I'm not able to personally visit this cemetery on a regular basis, nor contact County or State officials in person regarding the condition of the cemetery. I do know that there are Revoluntionary War and Civil War soldiers buried in the cemetery as well as the above mentioned Seneca Indians. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. 1. Re: [PABRADFO] moved to Wisconsin
    2. Many of the lumber farmers, loggers and other people related to the lumber industry moved to Wisconsin as the forests of Tioga Co. and surrounding counties were depleted. Additionally, many of these same people moved on to Oregon and Washington State later, for the same reason. Some of the people returned to Tioga County and surrounding counties after they had saved up a nest egg. My source on is from "Rafting Days in Pennsylvania", written by my great grandfather, John C. French. Hope this helps. Marion Scherer

    3. I was reading some of the extractions from the Tioga County Agitator and began to wonder why so many people from Tioga County moved to the Waushara County area of Wisconsin in the 1860's.There was a notation from a letter sent by one of by husband's people back to Tioga Co stating 2/3 of the town of Plainfield came originally from Pa. Does anybody know why? Thanks Joyce for those entries,I had been trying to find the Rozells, I never realized they had moved that far out of state Cindy Russell

    1. [PABRADFO] Elmira and Prohibition
    2. I have read that during Prohibition Elmira gained national notoriety when it was discovered that one of the breweries had parallelled the City sewer system with piping that carried illegal beer right into the illegal speakeasies. Does anyone know if these speakeasy establishments were in a central area(that would have much easier for the brewery to accomplish distribution), or whether they were spread out in various parts of the City? If they were in a central area where they might have been located. Were the breweries on the North side or the South side of the river? I have been told that there were speak easys on River Street west of Main St. Is there anyone out there that has either researched or heard passed down stories about the corruption and "party time" atmosphere that existed in Elmira in the roaring 20's. 2. Along the same question as Cindy had: I was wondering if anyone knows why there was such a large migration from NY to Bradford/Tioga counties the early part of 1800s. Have run across several families that did that -- then some returned to NY later. Would appreciate knowing this. Thanks. Lee J.

    3. Ever come across an ancestor with an old Bible name and don't know if the person is male or female? Drives me to distraction. Then I realized I already had the perfect source, my Scofield Reference Bible! It has a section that gives the meaning and pronunciation of the name. If that doesn't define the sex, you can go to the chapter and verse where the name is found in the Bible. If anyone has a name they want looked up, just send me an email. Lynn Tinsley

    2. For costs on vital records in NY, go to this site: http://vitalrec.com/ny.html Note that the "genealogical" fee is cheaper in some instances but if you are getting your own birth certificate, pay more and tell them you want it for getting a passport. That's the bc you'll need when you apply for social security. Might as well get it now. By the way, it has been faster to get from the county. I only apply to the state when I don't know which county! Pennsylvania has been different. Some counties don't even accept apps, just refer you to the state. It pays to know ahead of time which office handles what and to get their form online whenever possible. In fact, I tell them in my letter attached to the application that "according to such and such source, your office has such and such documents for the years such and such." I started doing this when the Scranton office referred me to the state for very old records that a reference had told me came from an office in Scranton. I got no apology but I did get the document the second time I tried. By the way, are you folks aware that the Mormans have made microfilms of many of the old vital records? I found the 1908-1926 Marriage Records for Chemung Co. on film. Go to the local FHL and get the numbers for the Index to the records so you will know which roll of film has the actual records. The index is also a quick way to know if they married there or you need to check another county. I got all my grandma's siblings' marriages that way. Wouldn't you know she married just before that time period, so I had to get hers the old fashioned way. By the way, they filmed the application for the marriage license which gives you all the genealogy goodies. The one you try to get when you apply for but often don't get. Nancy Long

    3. Good evening, list!! I would like to request several death certificates from Chemung County. I have the address, thanks to the tri-county web page - but would like to know how much to include in the envelope with my request. I read and reread and am sure going to feel silly if I just missed that information. Its been a rainy Monday up here in northwoods Maine. We have had the perfect balance this summer - warmth (no 90's !), just enough rain - its been the perfect summer (we have been so very blessed!) - but fair warning!!, the telling tree in the neighbor's yard has its first red leaves on several branches and there are a few leaves down every day now. Fall's a'coming in, way too soon. Would appreciate some guidance on the certificates. Thanks, Joyce in Millinocket, Maine

    2. HI All, I have uploaded flagholder pages for several lineage organization. I have a couple of questions maybe some of you can help with. Is the marker I found for Sons of the Revolution an earlier name for Sons of the American Revolution or a different Organization? Same for Sons of Veterans. Is that a related or earlier organization for Sons of Union Veterans? IF you know the answers or can do the research and find it, I can add it to the page and make it clearer. The flagholder page links directly off the main page of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M.
