Ken, I have no specific knowledge of the incident. However, if a women enters a catholic religious order she must spend several years, possibly 3 or 4, at the mother house being educated before she takes her final vows. She would not have gone directly into a convent in Elmira. The two most likely orders locally would havbe been the Sisters of Mercy or of St. Joseph. Both of their mother houses were and are today are located in Rochester, NY. Another possibility is the cloistered nuns of St Dominic of which there is a monastery(convent) here, and has ben since 1944. In this case she would have gone directly into this monastary and remained there for life. The Dominican monastery is located 1310 W. Church St. and the zip is 14905. The telephone number is 607 734-9506. George R. I know that St. Peter and Paul's Church had a convent. They were, if I remember correctly, the Sister's of St. Joseph (a teaching order, since St. Peter and Paul's had a school). I don't live in Elmira now, and can't remember exactly which street they were on, but the Church was across the street from St. Joseph's hospital. The Flood of 1972 destroyed the church rectory, and the priests moved into what used to be the convent. (the school closed in the 70's I think, and was being used at one time by human service agencies like head start. I don't know what's in there now, since I don't live in Elmira anymore. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice Chatham Township now has its 1880 census records on its page. AND the whole township page for Chatham has been renovated under the new format. ALSO, congratulations to Tri-County volunteer, Pat Raymond, on her retirement. Today is her last day in a long and successful career. Her party will be this afternoon, and then she can do whatever she likes (like work for us for nothing.) Send Pat a congratulation at Pat717@aol.com. Go check out Chatham from the Township Index of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice . Joyce M. Tice
There is a copy of this book for sale at: http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=32004161 I got to the above site by searching at this site: http://www.addall.com/Used/ This is an excellent source to look for used books, as many booksellers across the country list their inventory here. HI to all - What a wonderful reunion we had on Sunday, Aug 20th at the Cowanesque Lake. It was the 100th Reunion of the Cloos/Close Family that settled in Tioga Co. in early 1800. We had 247 registered family and we feel sure some never registered. I thank all of you who helped us find so many of the descendants of Newbury and Esther Short Close. For photos and other info on the reunion, check out www.snowscomputer.com. My nephew put it all on his website, just click on the logo for Cloos/Close. Thanks again to all of you and especially to you Joyce. Sally Close Meabon
Does anyone know if there were any convents in Elmira during the 1940's and 1950's, perhaps St. Marys? Ken Sullivan Canyon Lake, Ca
Hi Listers, I am looking for the maiden name of Melissa Horton, wife of John Horton, mother of Ruth Ellen Horton Wheeler, who was the wife of Harry D. Wheeler of Wellsboro, Tioga Co., PA. John Horton was born in Chenango Co., NY, 6 Aug. 1812. Melissa was born in 1813, probably in NY. John Horton is buried in the Wellsboro Cemetery in the Wheeler plot but Melissa is not. Ruth Ellen Horton Wheeler was the first wife of Harry D. Wheeler and Ida Butler was the second wife. Census records show that John and Melissa Horton lived with Harry D. Wheeler at his farm in Wellsboro. Janet Watkins, retired deputy count clerk of Tioga Co., is a descendant of Harry D. Wheeler and Ida Butler. While she is very helpful if I know what records that I need, she has no interest in the family history. The History of Tioga County, PA, has a large write up about Harry D. Wheeler, but I found nothing about the Hortons. Any help would be appreciated. Les Freeman
Hi Dick, Actually the site is Tri-Counties Genealogy AND HISTORY. You will find many articles that are only history and not genealogy on the site, including some on Queen Esther. However, the real reason I can't add it to the site is the one of copyright again. Anything that comes from any present day newspaper needs the owner's permission for me to reprint it on the site. We were given permission to use another article from the same newspaper recently, and anything that you can get permission to reprint on the site, whether genealogy OR history, I can certainly try to do. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I am including this answer to the list so that everyone is straight on the historical, and not just genealogical, focus of the site and also on the issue of copyright. Joyce M. If anyone has copies of the book or any chapters thereof, it would be most kind of you to type them up and submit them to the site so we can all have access to it. Hi All, I have just uploaded a new Mystery Marker to the flagholder page. Both B.A.R.C. and O. of I. A. remain unsolved mysteries, but I will retire them as mystery markers for the time being and give you all a chance to track down a new one. Joyce M. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I have just added the abstracts form the Troy Banner 1846 to the Tioga County Newspaper Abstracts section of the site. You can reach it from Box 7B of the Online Research Library. New pages are added at the bottom on the Newspaper page. Yes, all you purists out there. I do know that Troy is in Bradford and not Tioga, but Rhoda's group included this in their abstract volumes, so that is how this happened. BTW the following year the newspaper moved to Wellsboro anyway. I found the marriage announcement of my great great grandparents Mary Wood and Joe Holly on this new page. Take a look. Maybe you too will find a nice little tidbit. I also put an old postcard of the Almshouse at Troy on the new page. If any of you had any ancestors in the poor house, this is the place. Joyce M. Tice
Is anyone familiar with a book called "Fact and Fancies - a collection of articles compiled from the writings of Mrs. C.F. Munn and others" by Mrs. C.E. Munn. I believe it was published some time after 1870 because it contains an article from the November 13, 1870 "Athens Gleaner" newspaper. I have a multiple-times xeroxed retyped copy of an article from that book which tells about pioneer life in Litchfield township, particularly the family of Thomas Park (my 4G g'father). I'm interested in what other families are mentioned in the book and what else there is to be learned therein. Lee Kinnan Fazzari Aurora, Illinois
This is a hoax! It's not true and if you need evidence of this, go to UrbanLedgends.com, search on 602P and I'm sure it'll come up. For that matter, all you have to do is go to any search engine and type in 602P and I'm sure you'll find a lot of places saying what I am telling you, which is that THERE IS NO 602p IN LEGISLATION AND THERE NEVER HAS BEEN! It's something that someone created to get nice people like the guy who sent this out to the list to be concerned and send it out to who knows how many people and congest the internet with this stuff that isnt even true! It was a nice thought, but I thought I'd let all of you know that it's a falsehood from the research that I have done. Also, Bill Gates and Disney will never give you $5,000 or a trip to disney, Abercrombie and Fitch, The Gap and any of these other stores will not be giving out free clothes if you send the email on to 500000000 people, and you will never get free MnMs for forwarding emails! In fact, anything that tells you that they are doing an email tracking beta test and if you forward the email you will get free stuff is not true! It's not even possible to track email forward!!!!!! OK, I've had my say now. I hope I didnt make anyone mad, and if you don't agree with me, please don't write to me, just do some research. That's what I did. Thanks!
Hi Listers, Just a reminder: Most of the answers to questions on the list regarding location of cemeteries in Bradford County can be found on Joyce's site. Go to Online Research Library, Click on 1A - Cemetery Addresses and Locations, and 11C - Cemetery Addresses. There are a good many cemeteries in Athens Twp, Sayre and Athens Boroughs and the adjacent townships. In addition to the cemeteries in Waverly mentioned here in the past two days, MANY people from northern Bradford County are buried in the Nichols (NY) Cemetery. This cemetery is very important to both PA and NY family research. I know that Joyce is adding so much material that it is difficult to remember just what is available at the site. I find it useful and fun to periodically browse the site and refresh myself. Even though she announces additions, I always find something new or forgotten there. I am still looking for information regarding my grandfather, Chalres VanAmberg. Charles married my grandmother, Hannah Jane Stiles-Burroughs in Lindley(Steuben)NY on May 12,1888. In the 1900 census, he was married again to a Rinda Burton and living on Dennis Hill in Harrison Valley with Abner Burton (sometimes Button), her father . Apparently, Charles died in Elmira in 1929. Rinda, in 1938, is listed as an attendee at a funeral, still going under the name of VanAmberg, and it says that she has children. I am looking for those children....or their children. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Thanks bundles, Rose
What are the names of some of the public cemeteries used by S. Waverly residents? The family I am looking for migrated from Smithfield Twp. to Athens Twp. (S. Waverly) sometime between 1870 & 1880. The father was b. in Thomas Cemetery back in Smithfield Twp., but the mother, son, d-i-l, etc., are not buried there, and I am assuming they might be b. somewhere near S. Waverly. Both the father and son were employed by the railroad. I have checked all the Athens Twp. cemeteries currently on line and cannot find their names. Thanks for your help. Lynne B. Howell
