Hi All, I have added a picture page of Cold Brook Park School off Maple Avenue in Southport to the School Souvenir Books section. This is where I started my academic career, kindergarten through part of fourth grade. I am looking for older pictures of this building and also looking for any former students who are on this mail list or who use the site to add to the listing. Joyce M. Tice Tri-Coun ties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice
Hi All, I uploaded another photo to the School Souvenir Booklet section of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice This is the 1915 to 1917 Maple Avenue School in Southport. I have had this photo from my grandmother's album for some time and was aware that my Aunt Freda was labeled. However, this morning I did a sharpen on it and found the names of my uncles LaRue and Gerald also written in pencil. The penciled names had been invisible before. Take a look at another great addition to this section of the site. I am copying some of my first cousins on this new find. Joyce M. Tice
Hi Again, I have just uploaded a postcard of School no. 8 in Elmira to the bottom of the School Souvenir page of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice Take a look. Can anyone tell me another name for this school and a location or anything else about it. Present condition, if it still exists. Thanks, Joyce M. Tice
Hi All, I have added several new flagholders to the flagholder section of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice There are several we still need help identifying or tracking down more information about. The new one on the front page says Legion and is a Maple Leaf. This is probably the Canadian Legion, but we need information about that organization. Hey, you Canadians out there, give us a hand on this marker. Thanks, Joyce M. Tice
Would like to make a comment about the article on Queen Esther. It is doubtful that the actual truth of the matter will ever be determined. But as the author says, some sqaw was on the scene and was seen by many settlers at the Forty -Fort stockade the day after the Massacre. I want to also point out an error , in that Wyoming and Forty-Fort are not part of "present day Wilkes-Barre" . Wyoming and Forty-Fort, both up river and on the opposite bank of the Susquehanna from Wilkes-Barre, have active Boro governments and are thus not connected politically with Wilkes-Barre. Loraine Prutzman , Danville,PA
Hi All, Clymer fans, do take a look at the new school photos Frank Carlson sent in for Sabinsville. They are on the bottom of the School Souvenir page of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice Can anyone date the photos or identify anyone??? Joyce M. Tice
Hi All, I have added two special pages to the School Souvenir book section of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice One is the 1910 Elk Run School Prophecy written by my grandmother, Mildred Mudge, and the other is the 1910 to 1912 Minutes of the Wild Flower Society picnics, which she also wrote. These are both very entertaining, whether you know the people or not, and they thoroughly reflect childhood in our rural Tri-County areas early in the Twentieth Century. I have intended to publish these ever since I found them in about 1992, and now, finally, I have done it. Joyce M. Tice
Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I have uploaded a few more school souvenir booklets AND seven or so pictures of the One Room Schoolhouses of Erin AND a couple of pages of school postcards. These undated pages are at the bottom of the listing of the School Souvenir Booklets that links directly from my main page. I get notes from some of you about how overwhelming the amount of material on the site is. Let me tell you, the amount I have here that is NOT on the site is even more overwhelming because it is not done yet. Just for schools alone, I have a lot of postcards of schools all over our area and photos that a friend of mine has been taking of local schools in various states of abandonment. I have brochures and pamphlets and all manner of things that all need to be scanned and processed and formatted for the site. THIS is overwhelming. Maybe I'll go take a nap and get that out of the way first. Joyce M. Tice
Cyndie, Who were Mary Ellen Goff's parents? I'm descended from several Goffs who lived in Wells Twp, Bradford Co, PA in the early 1800s. My ancestors Solomon and his wife Huldah moved to Medina Co, OH and disappeared about 1833. They originally came from Glastonbury, CT. I suspect they died in Medina Co, but no cemetery record yet. I found a Bethuel Goff living in the same area as Solomon in CT, then VT, then Bradford Co, PA, and finally Medina Co, OH. I suspect Bethuel was his brother. Bethuel had a son Luman who moved to Erie Co, PA. There's also an Aaron, who I suspect was the father of Solomon and Bethuel, who appears to have died in VT. I haven't been able to find birth records yet linking these Goffs, but I'm certain they're related somehow due to proximity. Solomon had many children. I've got them listed on my web page (address below). He applied for a Revolutionary War pension and gave a list of his dependents. Solomon's first? son, my ancestor, Elisha, moved to Allegany Co, NY, then Winnebago Co, IL. His descendents moved to WI, then IA. So far I haven't located any Goffs buried in Bradford Co, PA. Yours are the first. Let me know if you can determine if and how Mary Ellen and her parents fit in with the rest of these Goffs. P.S. I'm in Herndon also. - ------------------------------------------------------ Winston Gadsby wingadsby@juno.com www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4678 - ------------------------------------------------------ Hi, Had the opportunity recently to visit Canton. Hi All, I have added some more school souvenir booklets to that section of the site. I am expanding that to allow booklets from other counties in as I don't know that anyone else is doing this. So if you have any from anyplace, send them in either as scanned 200 dpi jpg files or color photocopies. I also added a photo of the Whitaker store of Jackson Summit to the site. You can view it from the Jackson Township page, history section. I am having the darndest time writing this email as my first cousin keeps interrupting me with Insta mail. I hate Insta mail. I can't even remember what I intended to write about. Anyway, my brain is addled. Maybe I'll remember what I wanted to say. later. Oh Yes, I wanted to remind you old time list subscribers and the new ones that queries belong in the query system and not on the mail list. If you are not clear about the procedures or the reasons why I have them that way, please read the How to Use the Site page of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I am getting very close to catching up on all the submitted school souvenir booklets. I also found a few more of my own in my Uncle Homer's stuff that he gave me. I even have most of my grandfather's and uncle's report cards. My uncle, who never focussed on his grades at all, actually has certificates for four years of perfect attendance at school. I may put them up, too. Joyce M. Tice
Since there were a large number of Polish and Swedish immigrants in Tioga Co. in the late 1800s, especially in the Arnot area, were there any Swedish or Polish language newspapers? If so, what were the names of the papers? If not, what was the closest locality w/such papers? Lynne B. Howell
Hi All, The latest uploads to the School Souvenir Booklets collection of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice includes an 1892 graduation list for Mansfield State Normal School. These are the people who became teachers in the rural one room schools. Several more booklets have been added AND if you have looked at Maple Ridge and Chestnut Hill, look again as I have added photos to both. Marion Smith sent in (Dec. 99) a photo of the Chestnut Ridge students with everyone labeled. I found the father and aunts of my own late Aunt, Hazel PHILLIPS "Tice". Maybe you'll find someone, too. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I am continuing to format and upload more of the school souvenir booklets. Several new ones have come in in the past few days. If you are scanning any please scan at 200 dpi and save as jpgs. That is more resolution than I need, but it is easier to reduce than expand. If resolution is too low, I have to type in the names so you can read them and that can be time consuming. So far we have about 95 but I KNOW there are HUNDREDS more out there. For any of you who are local, consider visiting some of the older people in your area to see if they have any hidden in their attics that they would loan to us for scanning. Every day these are being thrown out as the older people die and someone with no appreciation for them tosses them to the trash. They are not only attractive mementos, but they also are valuable to the genealogist in locating families, especially when they moved around a lot between censuses. These census books are common in PA but much less so in NY. If you can't scan yourself, you can mail them to me and I can scan them and return them to you. I'd really like to see a concentrated effort to scare some more of these out of their long term storage and out where we can all see them. Photos and postcards of schools are also welcome, particularly the old one room schools that have gone by the wayside. Thanks for any help. Joyce M. Tice
Hi, Had the opportunity recently to visit Canton. Found my GGrandfather Solon A. REYNOLDS and some of his family including his wife Mary Ellen GOFF and her parents in the Main Street Cemetery thanks to the Veterans page on Joyce's site. Stopped at the small cemetery behind the Canton Municipal building but found no GOFFs there. Does anyone know where they went? Cyndie REYNOLDS Murdock Herndon, VA
Listers, I read that someone had applied for a civil war pension application and received the papers within a month. I applied for two. Both are for gr gr grandparents. One is listed in the index and the other died at Andersonville but is not shown in the index. Today, after exactly four months of waiting. I received notice from them that they had a complete file for the ancestor who died at Andersonville. Needless to say, I am ver excited. My information on him is sketchy at best. He is mentioned on the Clymer page in the story by Blanche Ludwig as it was her grandfather. Charles Johnson. My point is, don't give up folks. It takes awhile but for me will be well worth it. Harold
Listers, Seeing the addition of the Sabinsville High School booklet made my day when I saw the postcard I found in a family album of that high school and sent Joyce a copy of it. That's where it belongs. So listers, if any of you have old post cards of the tri-county. Be sure to let Joyce know of them in case she doesn't have a copy. Remember, this is for future generations also. Harold
