    1. [TriCounty] New at Tri-Counties Saturday 12 noon
    2. Hi All Friends and Guests of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> I have just uploaded the Military Records of George Gould of Rutland. He was killed in the Civil War and his parents had to prove he was their main support. These are on the Rutland Township page of the site. Thanks to Charlotte for typing them all up for us. Actually I wish all of you would take a look at the Rutland Township page. This is the prototype of the way I'd like ALL EIGHTY of my township pages to look. It is aesthetically pleasing and packed with content. For that to happen I need MORE from YOU in the way of materials. Yes, I know I am not caught up with everything that is already here, but I can always wish. Anyway, if all my township pages looked so good I'd be completely happy. Joyce M. Tice - OVERHEATED (Finally) in NY - Yes, we have HEAT and humidity. It is finally summer.

    1. [TriCounty] Reporter Journal articles 1880's
    2. montrose
    3. The Reporter Journal articles on the various townships in the 1880's that I copied years ago came from a scrapbook collection at the Bradford County Historical Society. This scrapbook collection was not complete and today I copied from microfilm two more installments on Wells Township from May 14, 1885 and June 18, 1885. I always assumed there may have been some issues that were not in the scrapbook. Interestingly, the June 18, 1885 installment contains information on two of my ancestors David Corey and Dunning Killgore. As for South Creek Township the installment dated October 29, 1885 on Joyce's website is not correct (it is incorrect in the scrabook collection and thus the error on the website) and that installment is actually November 5, 1885 and begins with "William Thompson, a Scotch-Irishman . . ." The actual October 29, 1885 article that is not on Joyce's website covers the Jones, Gillett, Dunning, Inman, Williams, and other families. There could be missing installments for Columbia Township, however the 1884 newspapers that contained those articles have not survived to be microfilmed so we are lucky to have the scrapbook articles. Many other townships were also covered and these are a wealth of information because many times the children and grandchildren of those early settlers were still living and supplied information. The Zephaniah Knapp family of Wells Township is quite well documented, however I still learned new information on this family from one of the articles today. I will try to get these typed up soon and sent off to Joyce. For Wells Township researchers I also did two more assessment lists, 1835 and 1836. J. Kelsey Jones

    1. [TriCounty] New at Tri-Counties Friday 9 PM
    2. Hi All, I have continued to chip away at the supply of school related memorabilia all day and it has come in faster than I can work. After a full day of web page formatting, I find myself with a bigger back log than I started with. What a wonderful problem to have. I am very excited about the participation of so many of you in scavenging out these photos and informative materials from their attic hideouts. Bill Benson's negatives came in the mail today and I find that I can scan them successfully using my super-duper HP transparency scanner. So far, I have put up New Albany and Biddle from that collection. They are both in the 1920s section of the School Souvenir listing. I am so excited about that collection. I expected just photos of the old buildings, but they are so much more than that. They cover every aspect of rural one room school life of the time including tooth check (See Biddle). They are truly a glimpse through a window to a time and place and lifestyle that is gone. We are so fortunate to have them. I will be chipping away at that collection as time allows. Check out the latest additions to the School Souvenir page at <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> I am quitting for the night. I have worked right through Wall Street Week and missed the whole thing even though the TV is just across the room - What concentration. Not even Louis himself could break my focus. I tuned him out. Joyce M. Tice

    1. [TriCounty] New at Tri-Counties Friday 11:30 Am
    2. Hi All, I have added another page of Tioga County Newspaper Abstracts to the bottom of that page. You can get to it from Box 7B of the Online Research Library of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counti es Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> I also added an 1897 Football Team photo from Mansfield Normal School accompanied by its 1999 reenactment team from Mansfield's 1890s days celebration. That is on the School Souvenir page which is in Box 8B of the Library or which also links directly from the main page of the site. Joyce M. Tice

    1. [TriCounty] Tri-County Update - Friday 8 AM
    2. Hi All, For those of you using the 1868 Orwell School photo on the School Souvenir page, I just found the file with the name labels so have added that to the page. ALL my email last night and this morning and some of my postal mail yesterday is MORE MORE MORE school memorabilia and promises of more to come. This has really snowballed as people have jumped in and gone hunting through their boxes and albums. The section of the site already includes over 140 pages and probably another 50 will be added from materials already here. I am also bringing in the older school pages from the Schools and Churches section as it seems a lot of people don't find that, so I am merging the school part of that into the Souvenir section. I still have heaps of school photos from my postcard collection to add to the site. I am just amazed at what this is turning into now that I have turned my focus back to this section. Part of the reason is that we have so many more active subscribers to the mail list who are also contributors than we did when I scavenged for school memorabilia last time. Every day I get mail from people who have just found the site, so usage is growing steadily. This has turned into a near full time job for me to the temporary detriment of Sullivan-Rutland Genealogy Project which has had to take a back seat. My greatest reward, as I have said so many times in the past, is that I am learning about our area every day. The more we learn, the more interesting it becomes and we are a long long way from running out of new tidbits about this area. Thanks to all of you who are such a help to me. Joyce M. Tice <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A>

    2. Hi All, Today's new uploads to the School Souvenir page include MORE souvenir booklets, a baseball team, an undefeated EFA Basketball team, Graduation photos and I can't even remember how many I uploaded, but the collection is getting massive. You can reach all of these treasures from the School Souvenir page of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-C ounties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> Those of you who were worried that Pat Raymond would not know what to do with her recent retirement, be assured, I visited her today and loaded her up with enough typing to keep her out of trouble for some time. The new retirees are the greatest source of free labor as they have not learned how to relax yet, and I want to do my part to make sure they don't figure it out. I also met and fell in love with her nine week old Yorkie. What a cutie ! She weighs one and a half pounds. That was my treat for the day. Joyce M. Tice

    2. HI All, For those of you watching the Elk Run school photos, I found the mate to the 1909 photo of the little kids. The 1909 big kids were hiding in one of my cubby holes right here in my own family stuff. I added it to the same page. Names were inked in, but in such random order, I can't determine with certainty where some of them belong. Joyce M. 1. [TriCounty] Sidney & Anna Boughton
    2. Hi Everyone, I have the minutes of the Smith/Schill Reunions from 1947 until they quit having them in 1972 or 74. These were loaned to me, and I have to return them in a couple of weeks. I always knew that Sidney & Anna Boughton were connected to this family somehow, but am sure now that I see their deaths recorded in the minutes. Does anyone have them in their research that could tell me anymore about them? I suspect that Anna's maiden name was Smith, but can't find any match in my family tree for her. I know that they lived in Big Pond on the road from the Berwick Tnpk. to the pond. I remember being at their house when I was little. I know that this isn't much information, but just thought it was worth a try. Pat Raymond

I had no idea why they do not get through correctly to some users of the mail list. Any attempt I have made to find out why has not met with success. I thank you for the clear answer and I would have appreciated it even more had you informed me directly. I am a little hurt that you would write a note of that kind directed at me to my mail list. I don't expect my guests to all like me or all the things I do for them, but I do expect all of them who use my resources to try to be as helpful to me as they can. It is called reciprocity. Thanks for the explanation, and now that I understand it, I am in a better position to do something about it. OK I just tried it and there is no way, even by typing out or cutting and pasting an http address that AOL is NOT going to convert it to HTML. That is what it does. Any comments or suggestions on this may be sent to me personally and not to the mail list. Joyce M. 3. Marilyn, It happens because some people continue to send messages to the list in HTML format. The RootsWeb mail server converts this to text and forwards it to us. Most mail programs do not recognize the HTML tags in the middle of a plain text document and do not convert it back. Those people sending these messages have already indicated they will not change their format so I guess we have to learn to live with it. Cheers! Ray Justus Chandler, AZ

    1. [TriCounty] Tri-County Change - I think
    2. Hi All, I had to go onto the mail list utilities this morning to see if I could discover why some guests' personal emails are going back to the list. Everything there is set OK so I don't understand it unless some are deliberately overwriting the Reply to with the list name. The list is set to respond to the original sender ONLY and only messages of general historical interest should be sent back to the list by deliberately redirecting them. While I was in there I discovered a new option to change the name of the mail list as it appears before messages, so that really is why I am writing - just to test it. Joyce M. 1. [PABRADFO] Old churches too?
    2. Lane Alexander
    3. Hi Joyce, you mentioned pictures of old school houses. How about old churches? About 20 years ago my cousins took a picture of the old Kennedyville Baptist church located in Tioga county. When we were there to visit this past June I took a picture of it and when I compared the 2 photographs I was shocked at how it had aged in that span of time. While I'm on the subject of Tioga county and our wonderful trip back there, I wanted to mention what a thrill it was to get to meet our cousins Ken and Sheila Chapman and to spend a bit of time with them. Also met Scott Gitchell and his lovely mother Isabelle they are another set of cousins. We also drove through a gorgeous part of Tioga county where we thought we were seeing rhodadendrons and upon closer inspection it turns out it was mountain laurel...acres of it...all in bloom. However, the biggest surprise (literally) was the black bear we spotted moseying along amongst the laurel and the ferns... 1. Mother Shipton's Prophecy
    2. Marie Brasington
    3. The following thought-provoking verse was first published in England in 1445 before the discovery of America. All events have come to pass except the last two lines: Mother Shipton's Prophecy "Carriages without horses shall go, And accidents fill the world with woe; Around the world thoughts shall fly In the twinkling of an eye. Waters shall yet more wonders do, Now, stranger, yet shall this be true; The world upside down shall be And gold be found at root of tree. Through hills man shall ride And no more horse nor ass be at his side Under water man shall walk, Shall ride, shall sleep, shall talk. In the air men shall be seen, in white, in black, in green. Iron in the water shall float As easily as a wooden boat. Gold shall be found mid stone In a land that is now unknown; Fire and water shall wonders do, Englad shall at last admit a Jew And the world to an end shall come In eighteen hundred and eighty-one." 1. [PABRADFO] Tri-County Request
    2. Hi All, I have uploaded at least 12 more school pages today and am just about brain dead. You will find that several of the pages at the bottom of the listing are present day photos of abandoned old one room schools in our area. In the neighborhood where I live in Cortland County, there was a lovely little red school on the corner when I moved here 23 years ago. Now it has collapsed into a heap of rubble and nothing remains to photograph. I would ask all of you who are local and who know of any old schools remaining in the Tri-Counties area, even if they have been incorporated into another building as so many have, to let me know what they are and where so that I can go photograph them before it is too late. Give me specific directions so I can find them. Or you may even want to photograph them yourself and send me the photos for the site. History is disappearing every day, so this is an important project. Thanks a lot. Check out the new pages. Joyce M. 1. [PABRADFO] Can you identify this school?
    2. Hi All, I have added ANOTHER page to the school souvenir page. It is of a school at Lowman which I photographed last year. I need name, history, etc. It may well be gone now as that is the area where they are razing buildings for converting Route 17 to Interstate 86. Thanks for your help. I just got a note form a woman who is sending color copies of seven school souvenir booklets. She comments that they've been in the attic almost a hundred years. She is so glad to have them out where they will be seen. Me, too.
