1. [TriCounty] State Road Cemetery, Bradford Co, Vandalized
2. Dick McCracken
3. The following article appeared in The Daily Review, Towanda, PA today. Photo available at: http://www.thedailyreview.com/data/news1/ This new story will expire about midnight tonight. The Daily Review does not maintain an on line archive. Dick McCracken Towanda, PA ----------------- News Cemetery sacked By James Loewenstein OF THE REVIEW STANDING STONE -- Vandals tipped over and broke at least 40 gravestones, including those of Civil War veterans, at the historic State Road Cemetery during an incident discovered Thursday morning. State police are investigating the incident, and cemetery officials are considering putting up a reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. "There are many old 1850s-era gravestones that are broken and are irreplaceable," said Charles Miller, cemetery coordinator of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Towanda, which owns the cemetery. Five American flags, which had decorated veterans' graves, were thrown into a corner of the cemetery, added Father Ron Hughes, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul's Church. The vandals "would have to be mentally sick," he said. Many of the 180 people buried in the cemetery were Irish immigrants who had come to the United States during the first half of the 19th century to dig the North Branch Canal, Miller said. The canal ran from Wilkes-Barre to the Athens/Sayre area. The vandalism was discovered Thursday morning by a local resident who saw part of a gravestone lying in the road next to the cemetery. Miller said he believes the vandalism occurred Wednesday night. Hughes said he does not know who damaged the gravestones, nor why he would have done it. The gravestones of "a couple of Civil War veterans" were among those broken, he said. Around Memorial Day, the cemetery was hit by another act of vandalism, when vandals pulled all the American flags from the graves and burned them, Miller said. Those vandals were never caught. The cemetery, located at the intersection of state Route 1012 and Cemetery Road, is one of the oldest in Bradford County, Miller said. Most of the people buried there died in the 1800s, said Henry Farley, president of the Bradford County Historical Society. "This was a blatant destruction of history," said Farley, who has ancestors buried in the cemetery. "It would take a real sick person to do something like this. People come from all over the country visit this cemetery because of the canal and their families." Residents who live near the cemetery said they believe that authorities should interview youths who were seen partying near the cemetery on Tuesday night. The residents said some of the youths appeared to be intoxicated and pounded on the side of a vehicle as it passed them on the road. The cemetery used to be overgrown with vegetation. But for the past several years, the church had been restoring it by clearing trees and brush, righting tipped gravestones, and building a fence around the cemetery that is a replica of one from the 1800s. The fence has antique-looking metal fixtures. "This is very, very disheartening after doing all the restoration work," Miller said. The cemetery "will never be the same again," Farley added. The restoration needed to address this week's vandalism will cost thousands of dollars, Miller said. Updated: 09/29/00 00:58:19 -- Plan your Work... Work Your Plan...

One of my three great-great-uncles who were killed in the war, died at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island. Can you tell me why he would have been there? He was in the same regiment and company as his brother who died in the south. Thanks, Fran Clark

1. [TriCounty] Barclay mountain tour
2. Dana Richter
3. To answer Pat Raymonds request and for any other interested parties the Barclay mountain tour is this Sunday 11:00 starting on Rt 154 in Wheelerville. Wheelerville is on Rt 154 south of Canton. The tour starts at the Game lands parking area at the top of the hill just north(before) of Wheelerville. It is a self guided tour. Points of interest are marked with numbers which are described on a handout provided at the beginning of the tour. The tour goes from Wheelerville along the old CCC road to Sunfish Pond, Carbon Run, Barclay, and Long Valley. The tour ends on Weston Road a few miles south of Powell. Sunfish Pond is a good place to stop for a picnic lunch. Points of interest include the barclay cemetery, coal mine entrances, abandoned town sites, etc. The forecast calls for great weather and the colors should be a little further along at the higher elevations of Barclay Mountain. I highly recommend it and Joyce has some nice pictures from the tour a couple years ago. -- Dana Richter http://www.chess.cornell.edu/~richter der4@cornell.edu

1. [TriCounty] School Program Picture
2. I have a picture labeled "school program". It is of five girls in large hats with flowers. The girls are Marjorie Beach, Mildred Firman, Carrie McNulty, Ruth Cup & Ada Brooks. I am guessing the girls to be about 16 years old. I know that Marjorie Beach was born in 1890, so I am guessing the picture to be circa 1906. On the 1900 Wellsboro census, Marjorie and her parents, Jesse Beach and Eva M. Ruggles Beach were living at 385 Ellis St., Wellsboro. By the 1910 census, they had moved to California. Would anyone know what school these girls would be attending? Does anyone recognize any of the names? It would be nice to find out before Joyce gets back from her vacation so that I could send her a fully labeled picture. Sharon Crowely, Reno, NV

1. [TriCounty] Tri-County Vacation update
2. HI All, This first night we are in Nashua NH. I found some terrific new flagholders now that I am out of my normal territory. I tried to upload a new mystery marker, but the connection here is too slow. It will have to wait. Also found some wonderful new tombstone art in old cemeteries in Bennington and Brattleboro VT and in a huge and very old cemetery in Dublin NH. These are older cemeteries than in the Tri-County area and just full of incredible stone carvings. The new car drives very nice and it must be the first one to go through New Hampshire judging from the attention it gets. It's like a puppy. It makes people smile. It rained or was overcast all day yesterday, but the photos came out fine anyway. Joyce M. 3. Whomever sent me extensive information and research in the past on McClure please contact me. Sorry, I somehow lost your name and email. It is hard to keep up with who is researching what families and remembering everyone. There was some question as to whom David McClure married. David McClure married Angeline Gernett 3 Aug 1871 (Methodist Church record). J. Kelsey Jones

1. [TriCounty] Methodist records in Wells and Jackson
2. montrose
3. The Methodist Church records for Wells Township, Bradford County and Jackson Township, Tioga County have been located by Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Barnes of Mosherville. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to them for locating these records and for allowing me to spend hours at their home photocopying the records. The records begin in 1868 and include a list of members, probationers, marriages, and some deaths. The marriages are from Sept 1869 through Nov 1896. These records also include a small class at Pumpkin Hill in Rutland Township, Tioga County and a class at Webb Mills in the Town of Southport, Chemung County, New York. In the History of Bradford County, Pennsylvania by H. C. Bradsby it states that the Judson Hill Methodist Episcopal Church was "an appointment on Daggett's Mills charge. Rev. J. Merring, pastor. Old church burned, doubtless by an incendiary. Present house erected about 1865." If a house of worship existed in 1858 at Judson Hill it does not appear on the 1858 ma! p as do the two Presbyterian churches existing in the township at that time. The church is shown on the 1869 map. The church was located on the west side of Judson Hill Road in western central Wells across from the Judson Hill Cemetery. The church was closed prior to 1962 and long ago fell into a state of disrepair and neglect and the building no longer exists. Various classes were also held in Wells Township at Mosherville, Rowley Hill School, Knapp School (located at Ayers Corners near the present junction of Bird Creek Road and Ayers Road), and in southern Wells at or near Coryland (formerly Aspinwall). All of the probationers and members who attended these classes will be forthcoming once I get the information forwarded to Joyce and Joyce gets the information up on the site. The information is extensive and voluminous so it may take a few weeks. The marriages are done and I will be proofing those today. The Methodist Churches in Jackson Township, Tioga County were at Daggett, Jackson Center, and Millerton. All three of these churches still exist. The History of Tioga County, Pennsylvania by Brown relates the Daggett Church was built in 1854, Millerton in 1853-4, and Jackson Center in 1871. There were various classes at the Cotton School (Trowbridge), Maple Ridge, and the Everett School. All of this information will also be forthcoming. J. Kelsey Jones

1. [TriCounty] Tri-Counties Site Additions Saturday 9:23 AM
2. Hi All Friends and Guests of Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice I have added pages 129 and 130 to the Tri-County Obituary & Clippings section which you can reach from Box 8A of the Site's Online Research Library. I have also added the 1902 graduates of Horseheads High School with picture and article to the School Souvenirs Section of the site. Other additions have been made to the Schools section, but I do not always announce it. I do try to get all new submissions on the list whether or not I have time to get them online just now, so that it reminds me what is waiting and lets you know what is coming. Check out the additions. I will be leaving on vacation early tomorrow morning, so try to keep down the mail you send me next week and hold off on any submissions until I return next week. I will have online access some of the time when I am in an area with toll free access to AOL. I will probably put up some pictures if I can. This is NOT a genealogy research trip - believe it or not. I do not have ancestry in the areas I'll be visiting. It is primarily photographic. I'll be looking for flagholders and cemetery art, and my friend will be looking for lighthouses, so we will be mostly on the coast. Both business trips and vacations make me lose my stride, so I am already feeling disrupted in keeping track of everything that is coming in to go on the site. BUT, sooner or later, I'll get to it all. That reminds me. I wanted to point something out to you. I do not put counters on most of the lower level (internal to the site) pages, but I did on the Athens Blacksmith photo. Here is a photo that is over a hundred years old and which has probably been hidden in a box for decades and now in the space of two days, fifty people have had the chance to look at it. That is the case with all the submissions that make it to the site. It helps me to place materials you send in if you tell me not only who the people are, but what areas in the Tri-Counties they were associated with. That way I can position them for maximum usage. It also helps me if you put your name and email address IN the document you are sending. Each month I make a new download directory and all submissions for that period are placed in it. As I process them, I move them to a directory called DONE (how creative). When I am looking at older materials and the name of the submitter is not included IN the document itself, I have to go searching by date through my email to find an email with an attachment on that date. It slows me down. Also when you send materials in the mail, please include your email address so I can let you know they are here. Sorry this is so long, but I got going on some things I had been meaning to point out for a while. I will probably add some of this to a page on the site for permanent reference on submitting materials. That's all (for now), Joyce M. Tice

1. [TriCounty] Census & Tax Assessments
2. Hi Everyone, I am transcribing the tax records for Smithfield Twp. for 1818, 1819 and 1820. In order to check spellings, I also printed the census for 1820. I find a LOT of people on one but not on the other in 1820. Any ideas why? I found a lot of spellings wrong on the census, and certainly understand why since I have read that microfilm myself and the writing leaves a LOT to be desired. The writing on the tax records were pretty good until 1820, but that year there were a lot of very hard to read names, and I have some question marks on spellings of some of the names. If you want to know what year your ancestors actually came to a township, this is a very good reference, and is pretty close to alphebetic order. In some cases, it also tells who they bought land from, or sold it to. I will send these three years to Joyce as soon as she returns from vacation. Pat Raymond
