Would anyone be able to give me the location of the following places from Erin in Chemung County? 1. Harrington Corners 2. Harrington Cemetery Thanks, much! /Debbie Galehouse
Hi All, I have added another page of the Tioga County Newspaper Abstracts. You can reach it form Box 7B of the Online Research Library of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> Joyce M. Tice
Hi All, I have just uploaded three more pages of scrapbook clippings to the Obit and Clipping section. You can reach these from Box 8A of the Online Research Library at <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm "> Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> These are from the Veteran/Horseheads/Elmira scrapbook. You will not want to miss the article about Eleanor Roosevelt driving into town in her little blue coupe, secret service agent in the rumble seat, to ask directions to the reformatory where she dropped in unannounced. Have fun with the new scrapbook pages. Joyce M. Tice
How many miles to the gallon?Family Discovery like many new groups are fleecing our works and selling them, they also have change lines to fit what ever scheme or family you want.r ----- Original Message ----- From: <JoyceTice@aol.com> To: <PABRADFO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 16 31 PM Subject: [TriCounty] FamilyDiscovery.com Hello Friends and Guests of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> I very much regret that information about Family Discovery has reached you through the Tri-County mail list. This is pretty much a scam from what I have heard. I would not recommend it or any other organization of its type. If this is the one I have heard about, they are indexing all the work that the many of us have put up at our own time and expense and made free for all of you. They, of course, are charging you to see what we have already given you as a gift. They are in no way reimbursing those of us who have incurred the expense. This is a very bad thing. If you really insist on paying for what is free, then please send donations to Rootsweb from which I purchase space at less cost than I could any other place, or consider chipping in on some of the expenses of those who are providing you these free resources. There are many persons who have created entire websites with no new or original content at all, but merely links to sites such as my own where the real resources are. If they are not charging you to use them, then they are really just finding a way to create a website without having to do any of the real work. In the case, however, of those who create a web site to resources provided as a service to the genealogical community at the expense of people like myself, and then charge you to use it. Well, I really don't know what to say that is fit to print. The information that has passed through the mail lists for site providers like myself indicates that is the case with Family Discovery.com. Can anyone tell me where the Ellwell Cemetary is located? Is it large and maintained? Thanks in advance. Dick Simonsen Reno, NV
Dear Bradfordians, Can anyone walk me through exporting selected PAF files. When I try to export the descendants of one ancestor and his descendants, I get almost 2,000 records - nearly my entire database. I know that isn't right. Any help or leads would be appreciated. The PAF manual and FAQ site are no help.... I am using PAF 4.0. THANKS! Bill Benson
I've just joined the list and am hoping someone can help me. Could anyone give me sources for information on the Chemung County Poorhouse, located in Horseheads (or Breesport), NY? I just found my gr-gr-grandfather listed there on the 1892 NY census. I found a paragraph on it in the History of Horseheads in the "A History of the Valley and County of Chemung" by Ausburn Towner, 1892 on the Tri-Counties site which was interesting. Why would someone end up there, especially if they had a wife and a number of grown children living in the same area who could reasonably be expected to care for him if he was destitute and/or ill? Would the people who lived in there have been buried in the following cemetery that is listed on the Tri-Counties cemetery index? And can anyone tell me where I could find a listing for it? Breesport County Farm Cemetery (Poor Farm or Chemung County Home) Horseheads / Chemung (C14) Thanks for any information anyone can give me, Sandy Heaxt

To all my friends on both the PAERIE-L and PABRADFO-L maillists, As a part of my participation in providing copies of pictures of gravestone flagholders to Joyce Tice, owner and webmaster extraordinaire of the Tri-County History & Genealogy Site, I have gathered quite a collection myself from around the Erie County area. So for those on the Erie list (and for those on the TriCounty list who may be interested), I have posted my meager 83 pictures to a Zing album at http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293548315 . For my Tri-County friends - I am not in anyway trying to compete with Joyce, or match her number. I do however, have a number of local fire departments represented. Bill Klauk Millcreek Township, Erie County, PA
I dont know a lot about the family in Bradford, per se, but I do have Gates in my family which ended up in Tioga county about 1830...I can send info on the Gates altho it would be a bit further back in time... Let me know if you need something. Cynthia Dickinson
Hi All, In New Brunswick, in all the cemeteries we visited, flagholders are very very rare. However military and organizational emblems are etched on the tombstone as they are in some cases here. On several stones where I found the Knights of Columbus insignia, I also found another on the woman's side. It is a bird diving from above into a globe. I suspect this represents a Catholic women's organization equivalent to the Knights of Columbus. Can any one give me any ideas on this? Please contact me directly. I do not have that insignia on the flagholder page yet. Thanks, Joyce M. Tice
Hi All, I have just uploaded the new Mystery Flagholder that I tried to upload earlier in the week. You can reach it from the Flagholder section of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> I found two of these in the same cemetery in Vermont. It is very pretty but none of its acronyms or insignia ring any bells with me. Give it a try and see if you can come up with an identification. Joyce M. Tice
Glad you enjoyed your visit to New England. Those are neat little cars. I have lived in Vermont for ten years and have seen only 2 moose. A lady in this area woke up to seeing a moose looking in her bedroom window. Someone asked what I would do if I had a moose looking in my bedroom window. I said I would get my camera - my bedroom is on the second floor. A friend of mine who is 6-8 and weighs 325 was out fishing and got treed by a moose. (I would have bought a ticket to see that.) A week later he hit a moose and totalled his truck. The real danger in hitting a moose is that the bull moose are so big and heavy that if hit by a car, they fall into the windshield and kill the occupants. They can weigh up to a ton. Hence all the I brake for moose stickers. The tombstones are so interesting. There was a stone carver in New Hampshire who was happy in the town where he was living and carved smiling cherubs on the grave stones. For some reason he was forced to leave his town and didn't like his new home and carved frowning cherubs on tombstones in the new town. Jim Avery Quechee VT
Hi All Friends and Guests of <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A> , I am back from my New England vacation. It was great. We had wonderful weather and wonderful LIGHT all the time except for one snow spitting morning in New Brunswick. We saw covered bridges, light houses, wonderful buildings, fantastic scenery and tombstone art that is astounding. You will eventually be seeing some of that. I have a new supply of flagholders and organizational plaques which I'll be getting on site as soon as I can. I spent ALL of yesterday cataloguing the 940 photos I took in the six days and today has gone in to answering email. Those of you on the mail list who got the message were very good about not sending mail, but there are so many site guests who are not on the mail list that sent mail. Anyway, I am trying to get organized again and get my stride back. It will take a while. We did NOT see a moose and my friend is convinced it is just a marketing gimmick. There are all these signs that say Brake for moose,. Hundreds of Collisions and we saw nary a one. We did see a bald eagle on the way but that was in the first twenty miles of the trip right here in New York State. AND I have seen a moose in New Hampshire on an earlier trip, so I know they are real. The new little cruiser was the sensation of New England and New Brunswick. It was great fun. Even customs was more interested in the car than anything we might be carrying over the border, and construction came to a halt in construction zones when we went through. Whenever we stopped anyplace people were all over it trying to peer inside and wanting to know all about it. One couple even chased us into a gas station to get a look inside and one poor kid on a bike almost hit a tree attempting to get a better look. It now has almost 2000 miles on it and is full of New England sand. It needs a cleaning and a rest. That's all for now. Joyce M. Tice <A HREF=" http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/jmtindex.htm ">Tri-Counties Genealogy & History Sites of Joyce M. Tice</A>
Good morning list- I am new to this list, and decided I'd post the names I'm reseasrching to get started. David Allen b. 02-22-1798 I believe in Pa. Married Sarah Coolbaugh. They had one son, Aaron Chubuck Allen, who was born in Towanda, Bradford Co. Pa. Aaron later moved to Sycamore, DeKalb, Il. Is anyone on the list researching this family? Rodger GRIMM in Nashville,Tn.
Hi, I am looking for someone willing to take some pictures of gravestones in the Riverside Cemetery, near Elmira, Chemung Co. There are four Brewer graves there (maybe more, I don't know). Abraham, Elijah, Eunice and John Brewer. Also, perhaps someone might be willing to see if there were any cemetery information available about these folks. I would be most grateful and would be willing to pay expenses. Thanks for any suggestions. Bonnie Briggs Brewer
Hi Everyone, Mrs. Barbara Gates Decker, who taught in East Smithfield for many years, is interested in the Gates Family history. She is in the Bradford County Manor, unable to walk, but her mind is sharp as a tack. When I visited her on Friday, she asked me what I could find out about her father's family. Her father was Freeman Gates b. 1878 in Springfield Twp. he died 1957. He is a descendant of Oliver Gates who settled in Springfield Twp. in 1806. I have researched this family on Joyce's website, and came up with quite a bit of information, but if anyone has really worked on this family would you please contact me. Thanks Pat Raymond
I'm sorry about this I didn't know it would send it to everyone
