Oh boy, you all are making me homesick! I'm in L.A. and haven't seen snow in about 20 years! It was in the 70's here today, just a beautiful day. But I do miss the magic of snowflakes. Enjoy 'em! When I lived in Rochester, NY, my mother-in-law always said there had to be snow on the daffodils. On April 19th several years ago, I was north of Asheville and we had snow during the night. The freeze almost ruined the peach crop that year. This is one reason I have lived in FL for the last 40 yrs. Not as pretty as PA, but you cant have everything. Eleanor Hobbs
Hi, It started to snow here that early in the morning, too..but we live 1500 FT above the ground and it coated the ground here......
Many years ago a lady from California wrote me that her grandfather remembered a family Bible in the home of Jacob Alanson Weller (1810-1887) in Greens Landing, Athens PA. He thought it had been in German. It could have come from his grandfathers family or from his grandfathers wife's family -she was Julia Fitzgerald, her mother was a Bookstaver. One of those intriguing never answered questions that stay with a family researcher.
I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are more that 4274 prisoners on record from the state of Pennsylvania and more than 1800 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of some 13000 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Hi Shawn and other willing transcribers. This is a WONDERFUL idea. Thanks you so much. Transcribe them per directions on the site and we'll get them on the site for all to see. Hooray. Joyce M. After reading the discussion last night on Bible records, I contacted my other lists, some being in England, and some responded very promising. There is a web site that records Bible records free of cost for all to see at: http://www.biblerecords.com/ Could we include the Bible records that the kind folks on this List contribute to this other site so everyone can find them? Hello, There are some family bibles in the Spaulding Memorial Library in Athens, PA. I plan on trying to get down there to try to transcribe them. IF someone else has the same plans, please email me so we can coordinate our efforts and not double eachother's work. Thanks! Shawn Woodard [email protected]
I am searching for anything that resembles a family Bible that might have belonged to my Carpenter Family who lived in Osceola and Middlebury Twps, Tioga County from c.1800 to at least 1850. The Carpenters have several times in different generations donated land to make it possible for churches to be built, and my g-g-grandfather even graduated from divinity school, but, as of now, no family Bible has been found. I often wonder if it was because my g-g-grandmother was illiterate because all of the documents I have that require a signature by her are signed with an X. My ggg-grandfather was Jededian Carpenter m. Sarah Burley, and their children were Mariah (Maria--who married Alonzo Locey), Elizabeth Ann Carpenter (married Silas Howard in 1848 in Penevang), James Carpenter and Rhoda Carpenter. The last entry I have for them in PA is the 1850 Census. If any records are found, I certainly will make them available to everyone. If someone knows of a Bible or any other records that exist for this family, please let me know. Judy Neu Henrietta, NY
Yes, yes, yes!! I only know of ONE family bible in existence for our family (and thankfully it's on Joyce's site already: Hunt/Nixon), and would be sooo grateful if other info surfaced via family bibles and/or diaries! Another source we should check: eBay (search: family* bible* NY* AND/OR family* bible* Penn*), AND "paper collectible" shows. I'm going to an "International Book, Print, and Paper Fair" in Glendale, California this weekend. Those of you on the east coast will undoubtedly have much better luck finding family connected bibles than I will out here, but it's still fun to look! Best, Lorraine ***** If you run into a yard Sale - look for family bibles. If you hear of a book sale at a library - check it out for family bibles. Do you have a local used book store - Check it out repeatedly. Then lets put them on the web.

I would love to see the Cole family bibles from the Wyoming Valley. I have a handwritten history of the rest of the clan on down, but the first ancestor was an orphan of the Massacre of 1778. I'd be happy to share that history if any would be interested, although there isn't much about the area other than the mention of the Massacre, and mention of the Capron family of the Valley. Hi All, One more thing I want to add on obtaining Bible Records. For those of you who are local within these three counties, be aware that the attics of your neighbors are full of old Bibles with records included. I invited one of my Sullivan Township neighbors in a couple of weeks ago to identify some school photos. He possesses four family Bibles which he has loaned me and which I will transcribe for the site. Check your neighbors and lets build the database of Bible records that are presently unavailable to anyone. Thanks, Joyce M. Tice
Bibles - who has the trunkful of VAN LOON (LONE/LOAN) bibles anyway? I'm convinced a Bible would be the ONLY place there is documentation for B-M-D records for the Van Loons that would be newer than what is found in the Dutch Reformed Church records of the 16-1700s. Those records sure aren't to be found in the Black Hole of Records called New York State! Sue Alberts [email protected]
Boy! If I could find an old family Bible you would hear me jump up and down clear from California. Jane Webb
Hi Joyce, Last year, I submitted to you quite a bit of information on the GOULD/BENSON family. I have heard nothing about this and I have not seen it on the site. I am confused by your last e-mail to the list. Chocy
Hi All, Following is an email I received from a person and my response. I am passing both on to you as I would assume many of you are also receiving these. Just be careful, as always. See my advice and warning below. Joyce M. Tice Subj: Re: Recv'd an E mail subj: Joyce M. Yes, there is a virus going around and you fell for it. I am so sorry. Never download a file you do not understand. This new virus even uses email addresses from people you know and scans your email for subjects that make sense to you. I have even received some from myself. Keep your virus programs updated and do not download any mystery files. Check Norton or McAfee sites for solutions. So sorry. Good luck, Joyce M. Tice > Subj: Recv'd an E mail subj: Joyce M. Hi All, This month's focus at Tri-Counties is on squeezing out every last Bible record, Diary, and letter we can get from our loyal guests. At the end of this note I am including the preface to the page devoted to that that gives detail on WHY you should submit yours. So far this month, the 850 of you on the Tri-County Mail list as well as the several hundred others who use the site regularly, have submitted about 16 Bible records and one diary, twelve or so of which are now on site. Actually I have personally submitted quite a few of those myself. Don Stanton, Lee Freeman, Fay Morgan, John Clancy and all others who submitted - thanks a lot. We are grateful for the new submissions and they are now safe and in the hands of those who need them. Hooray. My goal is to say 10% of you on the mail list submit one of these and that gives us 85 new treasures to share with the world. [Here comes the guilt dose] If you are using materials on the site, then, yes, you are definitely obligated to submit what you have available. If you are taking advantage of the convenience and cost savings of researching online, then, yes, you too, must add what you can to the body of knowledge we are accumulating here. This site exists only on a two way, cooperative basis. If you take, then you must also give. I recognize that many of you are new to this and may have very little, but it all comes together to make this the extraordinary site it has become. If you truly have no records to share, then don't feel guilty, but if you do, your guilt can only be assuaged by typing them up for us. I have been putting up fewer pages than normal this month and am getting quite a backlog of other submissions which I WILL catch up with. I have been ripping up carpet, laying new floor and wallpapering at the PA house in preparation to moving in permanently someday. It's looking good and I will get back to the normal 200 new pages per month that we have been uploading. Keep your submissions coming. PLEASE read the WHY of this month's focus below and GET your Bible Records to me for inclusion and preservation. Thanks. Joyce M. Tice Diaries, Letters, and Bible Records are among the most valuable additions we can hope to have for the site. First, they are one of a kind. Only one copy exits, usually in private hands, unavailable to the public or to other descendants. Many even end up on the auction block where they are valued for very different reasons than we genealogists value them. Second, they cover events, relationships, births, marriage, deaths for a period when public records were not kept in our area, Pennsylvania and New York. They may well be the ONLY record of a person's vital dates, or even existence. Third, they are VERY vulnerable. If a person has the only copy of certain information in existence and it is damaged, it is GONE FOREVER. Getting these records transcribed and available is the only way to preserve this information about the people who took the pains to record their existence. We owe it to them and to our fellow researchers who have willingly shared their own resources. I am certain that many of you have in your possession Diaries, Letters, or Bible Records or transcriptions thereof that can add to the body of knowledge we make available to the researcher. I too am guilty as I have many Bible transcriptions I have collected for my Sullivan-Rutland Genealogy Project that I have not yet had typed up for the site. I will do it, if you will. Get those records in. At the same time you can register as a descendant for that following the format I have established below. If you descend from families whose Bible records are already on site, just give me the path to them from you. Use only real names and not married names, to show our female ancestors the same respect and individual recognition we give our male ancestors. Separate the generations with commas only, no number or any other indicator. Simple is best and causes me the least amount of editing. If the Bible represents multiple generations, as the one in my example does, present it as I have in the example. The Bible record transcriptions may be done in your word processor and sent as a file attachment or may be typed into your email. Please proofread FIRST. I do not want to have a submission followed by several corrections. Check your work and then send it. Do NOT use tabs in your work. If you are using columns, either use Excel or insert a table into your document. Tabs collapse when converted to HTML and all your formatting will be lost. If you have Bible records from other areas that are not already published, please include those also, as we need to get these out to the people who need them. Before sending your submissions. please read the directions a second time to ensure you have followed them.
