Hi Everyone, Since I seem to have started something with the snow e-mail, I'll add to it. The weather has been so cold the last two mornings that my hummingbirds are enjoying slushies (sp?) instead of their usual nectar. Pat Raymond
NOW I know why my great-great grandfather moved from Chemung County, NY to Illinois. That wasn't far enough. He then moved to Central Texas in the beautiful Hill Country. And am I glad! That still wasn't far enough for him. My Great grandparents stayed in Texas while he moved to the Isle of Pines (Now called Isla de Juventad, Isle of Youth) in the West Indies. And am I glad that his son and wife stayed in Texas, because Castro came along and confiscated all their island land and property to use for himself as a place to entertain his friends. G-g Grandpa had by then died and was buried in the American Cemetery in Columbia, Isle of Pines. But the rest of his children and grandchildren had to come back to the States, and dispersed all around the U.S. And I am still glad to be a Texan. But doesn't it sound as if GG-Granddpa led an exciting life, and saw a lot of beautiful country? By the way, if any of you know anything about John A. Ramsdell, at one time Post Master of Veteran, in Chemung County, I would love to hear more about my GG-Grandpa. Also, I have been trying for years to find where his first wife, my GG-Grandma is buried. Her name was Achsah Delora Buzzell Ramsdell, and her sister-in-law says she died in Sullivan Vaill, do you suppose that was the way she heard it, but that she did not spell it correctly? Could it have been Sullivanville? She died in 1852. P.S. The Texas weather is so beautiful, and has been for the past few weeks. Now, I promise no more long e-mails to the group, just thought I would join the weather chatter group for a few minutes. I do enjoy this list, and all you friendly, helpful people. Oh , I am getting so excited with all the information ,I am learning so much about the civil war and my GG Grandfather. Now I can compile everything and put it on the back of my cannonball quilt! I want to thank everyone for their help. This is a great group of people!:) Hugs, Sandy
There is a scientific explanation for the observations recorded in Heverly's history as presented by Dana Richter. About 900AD a four hundred year period of rising mean temperatures known as the Medeival Warm Period began. during this time Erik the Red buit settlements on the southern tip of Greenland where they raised cattle on as many as 280 farms. There is even some evidence that Alaskan Eskimos settled portions of the north western corner of Greenland. About 1200AD temperatures began cooling again, in what scientists call the Little Ice Age, until by about 1675 mean temps were several degrees below what they were in 1200. The Norse setlers in Greenland had gone on to "greener pastures" by this time, but the cooler summers caused Icelanders to give up farming and turn to fishing. The late 1600s seems to be the point at which climatic changes again reversed direction, but at a slightly slower rate. By the beginning of the 19th century mean temperatures had only increased about a degree when they leveled off until about 1880 when they resumed their upward climb which continues today. It's just the natural cycle of things caused by the sun's uneven heating of the earth's surface which is further modified by prevailing wind patterns resultant from the earth's rotation. Nothing hi-tech or revolutionary here, just Climatology 101. Aren't we fortunate that our pioneering ancestors had the pluck to survive such harsh conditions. Phil , Ty for the information , I bookmarked and will finish reading later, but wanted to ty for your help. Sandy
In my stash of miscellaneous Havens information, I have a census form I filled out for 1850 Richmond, Tioga County, PA and I copied some of the names that are living in a hotel because they are PA surnames I am researching: L. S. Havens age 23, Laborer, born New York [which Havens family does he come from ?]; Samuel Hunt age 61; Sally Hunt age 60; Polly Hunt age 18; Gurdon Fuller age 40, Sally Fuller age 33; Royal A Fuller age 7; Eldon A. Fuller age 5. Can anyone identify these person? I have a Fuller family of Bradford County as ancestors and I have a Theodosia Hunt who md. my elusive William Havens and they are the parents of the Havens I have been chasing around Bradford County: Henry H. aka Harry and his sister, Harriet "Hannah" who md. Thomas Ames. [Hoever, neither William nor Theodosia died in PA] Olive California
I was wondering if there are any civil war buffs out there? I am trying to find out about my GG Grandfathers battles in the civil war. Does anyone have an idea how I can get such info.? I made a cannonball quilt and wish to dedicate it to my ancestors who fought in the civil war. I would like to put all the information on the back of the quilt. I do know he was with the 53rd. Reg. Sandy
Two sons of Henry H. /[Harry] Havens and wife Catherine {H. Cranmer?} who may have survived long enough to have a family were: James Havens born abt 1832 in PA and Franklin, born abt 1838, also in PA. This information gathered from census that I have seen, through 1860 for Bradford County, and in not seeing them listed in Turnpike Cemetery where the rest of the family is buried [except for Henry/Harry who is still among the missing]. Is it possible there may be descendants who might have some family information to share/exchange? Olive California

I wanted to send everyone a warning that people are sending around a HOAX Virus again and it will delete your files if you do what it says. Never delede a file without checking with your virus protection Hoax first. You can delete important files to run your programs. The one I am talking about I got from several people today and I have already warned them of it being a Hoax. The virus alert that is the hoax was jdbgmgr.exe. Please if you get this disreguard it if you have already done it and deleted the files email me and I can send you the fix. Hugs, Sandy
Recently I came across a civil war web site Andersonville prison where 19 soldiers' names were listed on one headstone...I recognized one as a Tioga Co. Pa. enlistee who had died at Antietam; perhaps you might have the same bit of luck; the momument was at the Union M.E. Church cemetery in Cecil County Maryland. My father was born in 1880, in Rutland Twp.,Tioga Co. PA., and lived there most of his life. He used to say that he had seen snow in every month of the year at sometime during his life. Now you know why I moved to Florida. Creig B. Crippen Orange City, FL
Thanks to the help of a friend, I found the burials of members of the Henry H. "Harry" Havens family [all except Harry, that is] who are buried in Turnpike Cemetery - It would appear that only sons James and Franklin, born about 1832 and 1838, survived to adulthood and perhaps married and had families? Anyone descended from them or have information about them? I have been stuck on my Havens line and have not been able to get further back than William Havens, the Father of Henry "Harry", his sister Harriet "Hannah" and now, I think, a brother Albinus Havens who d 1833. If I can just get a clue as to where in New York all these people came from, perhaps I can finally crack this case. Olive California
I'm not sure what became of it, but my family used to have a picture taken in Overton, Bradford County of a pretty good covering of snow which occurred on the second of June sometime during the Twenties. On a clear day we can see the snow capped Sierra Nevada 75 miles away and that's close enough for me. Snow in May! That brings back memories of when I lived in New York State, near Watkins Glen. I have a picture dated May 23, 1974, with snow on my lilacs! No snow here in Phoenix, AZ. It was 102 degrees here today! Wonder what our temperature will be in July! Jane Gerber
Hello all, I had seen somewhere that the contents of the site were going to be for sale on CD-ROM. Is that still the plan? When will they go on sale? Thanks, Alice
