    3. a good number of those homes eventually became the VA Medical Centers at same locations. The "Veterans Administration" came into existence in 1930. Elevated to cabinet level department 15 March 1989 by President George H.W. Bush (not his son, ok?) VA took control of all national cemeteries in 1973 from the Army. http://www.va.gov/vafhis.htm David Samuelsen Marc Thomas wrote: > > Before the VA was created as we know it, there were still Soldiers Homes. > The Bath Soldiers Home existed well before WWI, and around 1905 was home to > about 2000 Civil War veterans of the G.A.R. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2002 8:03 PM > Subject: [Tri-Counties] VA Hospital Bath, Steuben Co > > > I realize that the list doesn't cover Steuben Co, but is there someone in > the > > Elmira area that knows when the Vet Administration opened the Bath > facility? > > Was it after WWI or WWII? > > Thank you! > > Gail- Syracuse, NY > >

    1. [Tri-Counties] VA Hospital Bath
    2. The Bath VA Medical Center began as a New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home. Initial funding for its creation was generated through a public appeal initiated by the Grand Army of the Republic in the 1870s. The first cornerstone was laid June 13, 1877, and the first member veterans sat down to a Christmas dinner in 1878. The state facility, which had a peak population of 2,143 in 1907, was turned over to the federal government in May of 1929 and in 1930 became part of the Veterans Administration. A Military & Medicine Museum containing artifacts dating back to 1776 is maintained on the grounds to honor the facility's long history. A National Cemetery with roots dating back to the Civil War is also located on the Medical Center Grounds. The Bath National Cemetery and its sister, the Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira remain open for burials today. The Bath VA Medical Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive quality healthcare services to veterans of the Finger Lakes Region and the Southern Tier of New York State. Primary and Secondary Services are provided in outpatient and inpatient settings. Inpatient care includes acute medicine as well as a 160 bed Nursing Home Care Unit and a 220 bed Domiciliary. Outpatient care centers around a primary care model supported by consultative specialist. The goal is to achieve excellence in the delivery of all services provided to our patients, employees, and the community. Localized services in Elmira and Wellsville provide timely and convenient quality health care for veterans across New York's Southern Tier. I found this information on the Bath website--hope it helps. Judy Neu Henrietta, NY

    3. CCC stands for Civilian Conservation Corps. In Missouri we had numerous groups who did a great deal of community improvement building. In our community a state park was created by their work. As to dates of operation, method of selection and time of service, I do not know. 2. Bill Benson
    3. The newspapers and newsletters published by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps at their camps from about 1934 to 1942 - over 5,000 titles - have all been filmed and are now available for purchase from the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). You can search for a title here http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/DBSearch/Ccc.asp For example, my father was in the 380th C.C.C., Camp Delmont, near Coudersport, Potter Co., Pennsylvania around 1933. A search on "380" and "Pennsylvania" produced this list: 1. Daily news. Coudersport, Pennsylvania 2. Moore's Run bugler. Coudersport, Pennsylvania 3. Moore's Run commander. Coudersport, Pennsylvania I can then click on a title to see the full record, which gives the years, frequency, number of microfiche, condition, etc. None of these 3 particular titles yet appears in the holdings on WorldCat (also called OCLC) as being owned by any of the 40,000 member libraries. The huge CRL libraries have their own catalog database, but many are OCLC members as well. This could mean that the films are just very new. Perhaps you are lucky enough to live near CRL, which is located on the southeast corner of the University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park (Chicago suburb). I think you get access them there, but am not sure. See http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/info/aboutcrl/directions.htm for more info. Hopefully some of the Tri-County, or nearby Mormon genealogy libraries will be buying those of local interest... If you had a relative in the CCC, why not ask them to look into it!
