    1. [Tri-Counties] Washinton Landrus
    2. Sheila, There is a Washington Landrus listed in Heverly's "Pioneer and Patriot Families of Bradford Co., PA". Not much but says he married Lucinda Granger dau of Roderick Granger and Almeda Dunlap. Roderick lived in North Towanda, Bradford Co. PA. pg 91 Other Landrus listed in index: Cynthia, Lemuel, Lucy, Mercy, Phoebe, Samuel. There is also an article on Washington in the "Genealogy of Northern Pa" Vol. 2 page 555. Says he owned a farm at Maple Hill (poss. Blossburg) or Tioga Co. PA and later moved to Michigan. They do not know the father of this Washington. Says he is the first member of this family that they have any definite info on. He was born in the USA of French parents. His first son was born in 1839. This set of Northern PA is quite old. Published I think in 1913 by Lewis Historical Publishing Co NY. If I come across his parents I will let you know. Hope this helps some. Pauline Wilcox

    2. Does any one know why in the late 1700's early 1800's some people have 4 names , such as Alexander Hamilton Phyllip Hicks? Was it because they might have been Catholic? I know this is a stupid question but I am curious that I might be missing something that could lead me in a direction for researching. They are labeled with the following names: #1 Gordon Harrington, Evelyn L., Myrtle Harrington, Minnie Jones, Bessie Jones, Oscar Powell, Inez Gunderman, Myra Little, Milly Little, Charles Wandell, Lois Gunderman #2 Mc Cumber's School- Lois Harrington #3 Minnie Jones, Charles Wandell, Betty Clark, Joe Doan, E.L. #4 Helen Doan, Joe Doan, Charles Wandell, Minnie Jones, Mildred Doan, Lois Gunderman, Inez Gunderman, Gordon Harrington, Helen Mysliversek, Grace Parcels, Catherine Furman, Oscar Powell #5 Gordon Harrington, Myra Little, Myrtle Harrington, Grace Parcels, Lois Harringtron, Betty Clark, Helen Mysliverek, Elmer Oscar Powell, Lois Gunderman, Catherine Furman, Milly Little #6 Minnie Jones, Mildred Doan, Helen Doan, Betty Clark, Charles Wandell, Helen Mysliverek Notes on the back say they were taken about 1929. Some of the faces show better than others. I don't know what enlarging would do. Minnie and Bessie Jones were my aunts and some of the Littles and Doans were their cousins.

    3. Thanks Bill for the great info on the C.C.C. They did great work and it was a life saver to many young men and their families after the stock market of 1929. (Before my time). My husband and I say some of their great work in various places around the states east of the Mississippi River. One place was a fairgrounds where they young men had carved signs to be placed in front of each building that would indicate what was on displays in the building. Their work was valued so much that after each fair the signs would be uprooted (they were on posts) and put into storage to protect them from the weather and from vandals. I wish I could remember where the fairgrounds was. I'd ask my husband but he is sleeping. Pat of NYS

    1. RE: [Tri-Counties] More on the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.)
    2. Bill Benson
    3. Roberta (and Tri-Countians), Here is a brief summary about the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.). By March of 1933, 13,600,000 people were unemployed in the United States. Because of this emergency, President Franklin Roosevelt, only two days after his inauguration, called a meeting of high government officials to create a Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.). The plan was to put 500,000 unemployed youths to work in forests, parks and range lands. The Army would run the camps. The Departments of Interior and Agriculture would be responsible for work projects and provide the personnel to manage them. The Budget Director would provide the financial assistance, and the solicitor and judge advocate would offer legal advice. Rather than establishing a new bureaucracy, the president established this program within existing governmental departments. The boys to be enrolled were unemployed, between the ages of 18 and 25 and unmarried. They were to come from families on relief. The enrollment period was for six months with the opportunity to re-enlist for another six months for a maximum of two years. Each enrollee was paid $30 a month, of which $25 was sent to his family. The remaining $5 could be used by the enrollee at the camp canteen or for personal expenses of his choice. Room, board, clothing and tools were provided by the government. The enrollee was expected to work a 40-hour week and to follow the camp rules. While serving in these camps, each enrollee was taught a new skill and could also attend classes to better his education. It is a staggering fact that more than 38,000 vehicle bridges, 7,000 foot and horse bridges, and 100,000 assorted buildings were constructed by the C.C.C.s (many of which we still enjoy today). The buildings included overnight cabins, ranger headquarters, barns, bathhouses, equipment and supply storage facilities, lodges, museums, picnic shelters, fire and lookout towers, houses, and garages. Other diverse projects included stringing electric and telephone lines, fighting forest fires, and building culverts, wells, fences, and guardrails. 1. [Tri-Counties] Johnston WALT death record lookup 1930 to 1950
    2. Virginia Jones
    3. Would anyone have suggestions on how and where I might find a record of death or burial for Johnston (Johnson) WALT living in 1930 in the 2nd Ward of the Borough of Sayre, Bradford County, PA? Would Bradford County Courthouse have such records? Are there any indexed death records for 1930 to 1950 that someone could direct me to or tell me where to find, for Bradford County? Johnston Walt was living, at age 80 years, at the time of the 1930 census of Sayre. He would have died probably before 1950, as I do not think that he lived to be 100. The PA Dept of Vital Statistics requires a rather expensive $28 for a search of death certificates for a period of 2 to 10 years and an additional $25 for additional 10 year search. Therefore a 20 years search from 1930 would cost nearly $60 with copy, and I cannot do that just now. If you can provide a date of death to them, it is only $3.00 for a copy of the certificate. I need help, please! Johnston Walt's burial does not seem to be among any of the transcriptions available online at the Bradford County Gen Web page. I have searched. Some of his children are at Tioga Point but he is not there. Some reference for identification : Johnston Walt was born August 1850 in Perry County, PA and he was married to Kate Foster. Kate Foster Walt died between 1900 and 1910 in Sayre. Johnston Walt's given name is sometime spelled as "Johnson" and he was picked up in one earlier Sayre census as "John". I believe that Johnston Walt would have still be living in Sayre at time of his death, and he may be buried in a cemetery in Sayre. In 1930, he was living with his son Fred E. Walt, in Sayre. Fred Walt died in 1940. Johnston Walt's daughter Jennie Walt was married to Dewitt Blackman and they also lived in Sayre. Johnston Walt was Protestant to the best of my knowledge. There would only be one "Johnston/Johnson WALT" in this area, particularly at that time period. If anyone has a suggestion for the most expedient places to look for this date of death or if some kind person has any extant lists of cemeteries at Sayre who is willing to do a lookup, please email me. Any help is appreciated. Best regards, Virginia Jones Researching surnames: BAIR, BADER, CASSATT, DEVEREAUX, DOYLE, FIES, GALLAGHER, KENNEDY, McDONOUGH, POTTER, RYAN, SCOUT, SHAFFER, STEPHEN, UNDERKOFFLER, WALD, WALT, WHISTLER, WHITCOMB, ZIMMERMAN, AND ZERBE
