    1. RE: [Tri-Counties] Burial Permits - Chemung County
    2. Myrt Townsend
    3. Pat, from reading your e-mails printed on the [email protected] today, I get the idea you might be willing to do look-ups when time permits. I have been trying to find the burial place of my gr-gr-grandmother, probably in Chemung County. Her name was Achsah Delora (Buzzell) Ramsdell, wife of John A. Ramsdell. My source is a small genealogical record written by John A. Ramsdell's sister in 1891. Her words, "Achsah died in Sullivanville, Chemung County, N.Y. March 25 1852." I have been unable to find any record of her death or burial anywhere other than this. John A. and Achsah Delora Ramsdell's daughter was born March 17, 1852 in Sullivanville, N.Y., and I have also been unable to find any record of her birth anywhere. I have never been in New York or adjoining states, so have no idea of where these places are situated; how close they are to other townships; which cemeteries have been enumerated, and which have not, etc. If there is some way you could check out the burial permits, it might give some pertinent information. I have been stymied by this brick wall forever, and would be so grateful for any help anyone can offer. I have been checking Joyce's site for three years now, and have found nothing to help in this search for my gr-gr-grandmother's grave, only the information that John A. Ramsdell was Postmaster in Chemung County at some time in the 1850's. Thank you, Myrtle (Ramsdell) Townsend Lewisville, Texas [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, August 08, 2002 9:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Tri-Counties] Burial Permits - Chemung County Bill, do you have an approximate date of death for Oliver Darwin Stiles, M.D? If you do, it would make it easier to check the obits. Even a year would help. A lot of the obits have been copied from the newspapers and put into binders by the volunteer genealogists at our Chemung Co. Library. This has been a big help to all of us in our searching. 1. [Tri-Counties] Mitchell Cemetery
    2. Hi Edna, According to our cemetery book here are the directions. From Van Etten you would take Rte 224 West to a left on the Marsh Rd. which leads one to the hamlet of Hicks. At the "Forks", previously known as Mitchell Corners, go west a short distance to the cemetery. There were noted a number of burials without any stones and a few with marked with field stones that are of course unreadable at this time. I don't know the condition of the cemetery now it was becoming over grown with locust trees a number of years ago. According to state law the towns are responsible for keeping this cemeteries mowed but a lot of towns do not adhere to this law. Thank goodness Erin does so I hope they have cleaned up the cemetery. I haven't be over by there in a long time. I am also sending this to the list in case anyone else is wondering where this cemetery is. This there anything else that I can help you with please let me know. Pat Wainwright

    3. Craig M Spencer here. A few members of the Spencer Historical & Genealogical Society, Inc ( SHGS) have participated in a DNA study to try to determine if we descend from a common ancestor.( http://www.familytreedna.com ) "Spencer DNA Project" results had returned that I descend from the "Four Spencer brothers". This test just solidifies what I thought all along. Has any other Canton or Wellsboro Spencer's participated in this study? CRAIG MICHAEL SPENCER born 1955 Elmira NY CLARENCE DAVID b. Caton NY d. 3. A big thankyou to everyone that responded to my question about burial permits. It is part of a search to find the date, place and cause of death of Oliver Darwin Stiles, MD. His grave marker is in Woodlawn cemetery but records are incomplete. Search of city, county state and other sources came up negative. Thanks again; Bill Stiles, Charlotte, NC [email protected]

    3. I asked one of our long time genealogist today about the burial permits in Chemung Co. He said that they are usually found in the Town Clerks offices if you are lucky. Sometimes they are kept and sometimes they are not. Pat Wainwright

    3. Bill, I don't know where Buriel Permits would be in Chemung Co. In Tioga Co. NY the Town of Barton has their permits in the Town Clerk's office. I was looking through them for the death date of my grandmother in early 1900's. Then I could get her death certificate. But Chemung Co. is different on a lot of things. If you would tell us whom you found and where then maybe one of us here in the county could help you. 3. Hello List , There is a series of Books containing information on the land sales by Connecticut called "The Susquehannah Company Papers" . This series contains over 30 volumes. I am told that the Historical Societies in Wyoming and Bradford County have the complete set.. In Volume 11, . 240, Wm and John Drown signed a petition to Congress dated Nov 1801. Does anyone have access to these volumes and if they do, could they see if these men or any other Drown families are mentioned in the other volumes ? If not can anyone verify that they are available in Bradford or Wyoming County and where they are located ? Thank you Marilyn Bess

    1. [Tri-Counties] Eli Conklin 1837-1902
    2. Tom McAlister
    3. Hello to all Bradford County PA researchers, A week ago, I received 75-100 pages of Eli Conklin's Civil War Pension papers. Yes, I read them all! Eli Conklin was born in Canton, Bradford, PA on 18 Aug 1837. He served with Co. C, 107th Regt. of PA and was an infantry volunteer. He was wounded by an exploding shell and also he was captured by the enemy. He married Nancy O. Gibbs of Overton, in 1866. They had several children including Orville born in 1890. Eli Conklin died in Dushore, Sullivan County, PA in 1902. His wife continued to receive a pension until her death in 1925. 1. Who are Eli Conklin's parents? 2. Where can I send for his enlistment papers? In his pension papers, Angeline Rinebold Haverly stated that Eli Conklin had lived with Reuben Rinebold (her brother) since he was three years old. Reuben Rinebold was married to Catherine Heverly. Their son, Addison Rinebold also made a statement. Also there is a statement by Clemet Heverly. Some where on Joyce Tice's site, I read that Eli Conklin had managed the original Heverly family homestead in Overton, for a period of ten years or more. Unfortunately I didn't document the statement. Can anyone help? I am working on a premise of who I think are Eli's parents. I would love to hear from anyone who has info on Eli. Thanks.
