    1. [Tri-Counties] Halt to surname blitz/rollcall
    2. Sue Perry
    3. For many of you that may be wondering about the recent "roll call" and Joyce Tice's request that it stop for now - - be aware that this unauthorized roll call was started by Roland Elliott, a mail list subscriber, who has been banished - - more than once, and perhaps finally from the list, - - for his inappropriate behavior and postings over the years. I don't know Roland, have never met him, and in fact, when asked a year or so ago if he should be allowed back on the list, I voted for putting him BACK on the list. At that time, I felt that most of his inappropriate postings were (1) either amusing, or (2) that I wasn't thin-skinned enough to let them bother me and it was easy to use my delete key. However, I now realize how much havoc this causes for Joyce in terms of (1) confusion for the rest of the subscribers, and (2) having to deal with emails from other folks who object to his postings. So, Roland has once again been removed from the list and I would not vote for his ! return in the future - - solely because he adds to Joyce's workload - - and that is not acceptable. Sorry, Roland - - you've been given more chances than my mother ever gave me to straighten up and fly right - - and she was pretty generous. It also bears repeating at this time - - Joyce's site is a gift to all of us - - a huge, huge gift - - and absolutely free! Have you yet to find another site that offers the depth and quantity of information she has managed to pull together over the years? In that sense, we are all welcome to make tactful suggestions, constructive comments, and reasonable requests to and of Joyce - - but we do not have the right to criticize her decisions or the way she manages the site or the mail list. You do have the right to unsubscribe from the list - - or not to use the site. I know that Joyce agonizes over trying to please everyone - - and tries to make the site and the list what the majority of the folks want it to be. You'd have to " walk a mile in her shoes" for at least a month or two to even begin to know what's involved in the work that she does. But we all know we can't please all of the people all of the time - - it's not gonna happen. Joyce, and Joyce only, calls for and announces the surname blitzes on a quarterly basis - - there are reasons for this - - which you can read about if you search the archives. (And Roland, I'm sure, was FULLY aware of this.) I know, I know - -- it's not like that on every list - - but every list owner has the right to make the rules and manage their list as they see fit. We can't possibly know all the why's and wherefore's that go into making these decisions - - and I don't personally need to know all of them. All I need to do is look at Joyce's site and know that there must be a very generous, committed, and knowledgeable individual behind it - - and that person must certainly be making decisions in the best interest of the site and list. I'll get off my soapbox now. I wish all of you much success and pleasure in your family research ! Sue Perry Ann Arbor, MI

    3. I'm sure the outlaws (me included) who thoughtlessly participated in the unauthorized blitz are feeling properly reprimanded. Can we apologize to Joyce, and the list members who were understandably annoyed by it, by making sure (at a leisurely pace so as not to overwhelm the system) that our surnames are all properly posted at the site? This is a great list, and the Tri-Counties site really is the best genealogy site on the web. -- Ann Sullivan

    1. [Tri-Counties] Halt - Please
    2. Hi All, I will consider it a great kindness if we can stop the unauthorized and unannounced surname blitz immediately. As you all know from the What's New page on the site, I am in the middle of a move and do not have time to deal with a surname blitz at this time. At Tri-Counties we recognize queries and surname listings as a very valuable research and communication tool. For that reason we put them on the site's query pages where they can receive the long term and higher volume exposure they deserve. They are too valuable for a brief second on the maillist only. Surname blitzes are announced in advance, so that those who do not want them can unsubscribe for the duration. We believe that services should be available to us when we want them as in the query system and What's New page on the site, rather than intruded on us as with the mail list. I am very overwhelmed at this time with my move and just don't have the time to pass these on for inclusion on the site as they deserve. We believe that for a county or regional site which is not well developed, using the mail list as a substitute is reasonable. In the case of Tri-Counties the query system and the periodic surname blitzes on the mail list are the way we organize it and keep this very large mail list from being overwhelmed. Queries submitted via the usual route on the site are included on the site within a matter of days, so a delay in the surname blitz in no way deters or delays your research. Starting a year ago I ceased to use the mail list to announce new pages on the site and chose instead to keep the What's New page updated so that you can all have that information at your own convenience when you want it. The quarterly surname blitz is indeed a little late due to my unexpected move - details on the What's New page. I ask that you return the kindness of having this great site available by doing me the kindness of putting this surname blitz on the mail list off until I can preannounce it and organize it and deal with it as it should be. If you have a response to his message please sent it to me personally only and not to the mail list. Keep in mind that even answering those responses is probably more than I really have time for at this time, so you might want to write me in a week or two when things will have settled a little better. While many of you like the surname blitzes, others of you do not. I try to satisfy as many of you as possible, but full satisfaction will never be possible. I will announce the next surname blitz when both myself and the person who maintains the query pages for me have the capacity. I told myself at the beginning that I could handle this move if the truck did not break down or the mail list get stirred up. The truck has had only one repair required and I am sure the mail list will quiet down until I can handle it as it should be. The movers will be here on Tuesday for the big stuff and there will be an end to this by October. Thanks for your compliance. Joyce M. 1. [Tri-Counties] Joyce Tice has asked that you stop this Roll Call
    2. Bill Klauk
    3. Hello to the Tri-Counties Mail List, Joyce Tice, your host for this mail list and the wonderful web site, is in the middle of moving this weekend and only has limited email access. She has asked me to post this note to the mail list to please request that everyone STOP the "Roll Call" / "Surname Listing". She has one of her quarterly calls for "Who are you researching" coming up, an asks that you wait for that announcement. Joyce apologizes that because of her moving she was not aware that someone had initiated this roll call, and would have immediately asked for it to be stopped. She will put further information out to this list when she is back at her main computer location. You fellow Bradford County researcher, Bill Klauk Volunteer County Coordinator, USGenWeb site, Erie Co (PA)
