    1. [Tri-Counties] HARDING / STORY- OHIO
    2. Thanks to my dumpster-diving 85 year old mother, we have a family Bible that belonged to Chauncey Harding, who married Rachel Story in Richland County, Ohio, in 1833. He was born in 1801 in Pennsylvania, she was born in Maine. Both home counties were obliterated. There are children/grandchildren listed up to 1867. The Bible itself was printed in 1857. I'm not a genealogist, so I'm sure that those of you who are will forward this to the proper website. Their descandents may be interested in this, no charge at all. Thank you. 1. Re: [Tri-Counties] Fence Viewer
    2. Dave Clark
    3. Hello Dick, "What in the world was a Fence Viewer?" In Colonial New England, each town held an annual meeting where town business was conducted. Officers for the upcoming year were elected, and participation at the meeting was nearly universal. Fence Viewers, Hogreeves, Deerreeves, Constables and all other public offices were elected, and were required to serve for a period of one year. Refusal resulted in a fine. A Fence Viewer generally was responsible for deciding the condition of all fences, reporting broken fences, issuing warnings to the fence owners, etc. In many areas, the office still exists today. It is always an unpaid job, but usually those appointed take on the civic responsibility in the name of public service. 1. [Tri-Counties] Fence Viewer
    2. Jim Duggan
    3. Lots of hits on the web. Here an explanation of the role in VT. from http://www.shaftsbury.net/town_officers/appointed/fenceviewer.htm "Fence viewers played an active role in Vermont in the last century. Today, however, fence viewers are called upon to act only in limited situations. On occasion, the selectboard will call upon the fence viewers to examine a fence line between adjoining properties to determine what portion of the fence must be made, repaired, or maintained by each party. Fence viewers may also be asked to determine where a fence must be placed when a fence cannot be placed squarely on a property line." Three fence viewers are appointed by the selectboard each year. They must be qualified voters of the town and must be sworn into office. (24 V.S.A. 831,871) Fence viewers examine fences and other boundaries within the town when requested to do so by the selectboard. When called upon to act, the fence viewers must give notice to all interested parties, or their tenants or agents, of the time when they will examine the fence or line between adjoining lands, before they make a division relating to the fence or line. (24 V.S.A 3811) All decisions of the fence viewers must be certified and recorded with the town clerk. A decision so certified and recorded is valid against the parties and their heirs and assigns. (24 V.S.A. 3811) " The Nebraska "Fence Veiwer statute" is on the web at http://www.ianr.unl.edu/pubs/farmmgt/nf390.htm

    1. [Tri-Counties] Re: Fence Viewer
    2. A fence viewer is an official similar to an electrical or plumbing inspector in today's terms. The duties include functional inspection of fences for animal restraint and, nowadays, legal requirements as to height, appearance, offset, and structural integrity. It's not as antique as you might think, Dick. I was Fence Viewer for the City of Marlborough, MA for a while, until last year. (And still am a Civil Constable.) I thought it was somewhat antique, myself. I quickly found that I had to bone up on civil law and be knowledgeably involved in minor civil disputes (And, it's unpaid.) dlm

    1. [Tri-Counties] Nov. 2 - Local Event
    2. Press Release Contact: Linda Young-Miller Jim Glimm/Local Heritage Project Director (607) 562-3407 lindenmark3@hotmail.com Towanda - Old-time fiddling, clogging, regional stories, songs and tall tales will light up Towanda’s historic Keystone Theatre on Sunday, November 2 at 2 p.m. at the Friends of the Bradford County Library Appalachian Heritage Concert. Featured performers include Mark Orshaw and his daughter, Laura, 15, of Athens, local storyteller Dr. Bonnie Kyofski, of Nelson, and the Cherry Flats Ridge Pluckers, of Tioga County. The Markell Family Cloggers, of Columbia Cross Roads will keep the show hopping with clogging demonstrations and young fiddle players from the region will showcase their talents. Tickets for the show are $5 and are available at the door. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Friends of the Bradford County Library Jim Glimm/Local Heritage Project. Concert organizer and independent producer Linda Young-Miller explained that the concert came about as part of a fund-raising effort to produce a documentary on the late Dr. James York Glimm and the regional stories and songs of north central Pennsylvania that he gathered and performed for over 25 years. Young-Miller will produce the documentary in partnership with the Friends of the Bradford County Library. The hour-long documentary will be geared for PBS and cable stations. A companion, 15-minute educational video will be provided free to elementary schools and public libraries throughout Bradford, Tioga and Sullivan counties. In September, Young-Miller was awarded a grant to defray pre-production costs through the Bradford County Regional Arts Council’s Pennsylvania Partners-in-the-Arts program. “When Mark Orshaw heard about the project, he volunteered to do a benefit concert to help raise funds to complete the project,” said Young-Miller. “In fact, all of the performers are volunteering their time. There’s a tremendous amount of interest in local heritage,” she continued, “and everyone has been very supportive. We’re looking forward to offering an afternoon that’s both fun and educational.” For more information on the Jim Glimm Heritage Project, contact Diane Sadler, Bradford County Library System at 570-297-2436 or e-mail lindenmark3@hotmail.com. The Glimm Heritage Project is supported by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA), a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Bradford County Regional Arts Council.
