Dear list members: James E. Mattingly obit from the Altoona Tribune, Thursday, March 26, 1874. This copy of an article was sent to me by Sharon Merritts of the Blair County Genealogical Society. --- James E. Mattingly, formerly foreman of the P. R. R. Company’s tin shop, died of consumption, yesterday about one o’clock, after a lingering illness. His funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock from his late residence on Seventh avenue, between Twenty-second and Twenty-third streets. The circumstances of the family are very distressing. His wife is lying dangerously ill, also his sister—so ill that the attending physician will permit no one to be in either room. There are six children left to mourn his loss. In checking the dates, I wonder how this could be from a paper dated Thursday, March 26, 1874 (as reported to me) when he died on March 22? Tuesday preceding date of the paper was March 24, making March 22 a Sunday. Does anyone have access to copies of the Altoona Tribune from that time frame? I’d like verification of the date of publication. I’ve been searching for any information of his family (other than his wife and children) for quite a while. The article mentions a sister who was “dangerously ill”. What was her name? He died of scarlet fever. Was there an epidemic in Altoona at that time? Could someone who has access to that paper check a few days after his death to see if there is any further mention of his sister? His wife survived, as did his children. Following are some biographical facts: James Edward MATTINGLY was born 16 April 1832 in Fairfax County, Virginia and died 22 March 1874. He is buried in Soldiers Circle, Fairview Cemetery, Altoona, PA. He married Susanna HOWARD DOTZLER on 03 August 1854 in DC. She was born 11 November 1831 in DC and died 15 October 1912. She is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery as Susan VERMILLION (her third husband’s name) near her daughter, Nellie E. (Mattingly) TREESE and Mayberry TREESE. Thanks for any and all help I can get. It's very much appreciated. LyndaLos Angeles
