Forty Years Service B. W. Flanagan Rounds Out Long Period in Employ of Railroad Co. Mr. B. W. Flanagan of 511 Eighteenth street, a well known employee of the Twelfth street tool room, on Saturday completed the fortieth year of his service with the Pennsylvania Railroad company, passed the day by working as usual, in the shops in the morning and quietly celebrating the anniversary at his home in the evening. Mr. Flanagan came to Altoona from Dexter, Maine, where he was born and raised, in the early part of April 1873, and, on the 19th of that month secured employment in the machine and tool room, where he has worked continuously ever since. When asked how he felt after working for one company so many years, Mr. Flanagan said that he felt like lots of other men in the Pennsy's employee who are past the age limit of usefulness fixed by Dr. Osler, "as fit as ever," and judging from the number of men employed by the company who are over that age, and the remuneration the receive, he believes the Pennsy's payroll disproves the Osler theory as well as anything has. ---------------------------------------------------------- End Of Fight Is Near Board of Public Works Member to Be Elected By Councils. The climax of one of the nastiest fights ever directed to the attentions of councils will be reached this evening when the two bodies meet in joint convention to select a member of the board of public works to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of W. T. McConnell. There are five candidates, Mr. McConnell and George Klesius and George W. Kuebler, both of whom have been former members of the board, C. L. Nonemaker of the Seventh ward and Simon Snyder of the Twelfth ward. The first ballot is not likely to result in a choice as each candidate will have a sufficient following to prevent an election. After the first ballot, the fight is expected to be between Klesius and Nonemaker. The subject of religion has been injected into the controversy, a matter which has been greatly deplored by many of the councilmen. Other positions will be filled by councils this evening, the vacancies on the board of appeals and a vacancy on the board of water, commissioners demanding attention. On the water board, President J. A. Elder will likely be chosen to succeed himself. --------------------------- MEMORIAL DAY PLANS BY G. A. R. Rev. E. G.
