Moore -------------------------------------------- Contempt of Court A man named Meloy, who was an important witness for the Commonwealth in several liquor cases which came up at the last Court in this county, but who was non est when his name was called, was brought up at the adjourned Court on the 24th ult., on attachment, and fined $20 and costs, and ordered into the custody of the sheriff until the sentence be complied with. The Judge intimated that his straightened circumstance has this time secured him a moderate punishment, but that a fine of three times that amount would be imposed in like cases in future. The Pittsburgh Chronicle in remarking on this case says:--"Judge Taylor is not a man to be trifled with, and if there were more courts like his in the State, there would be fewer rascals." ----------------------------------- Boys in the "Lock-Up" Two small boys, whose names we did not learn, were placed in the "Lock-Up" on Tuesday morning last, charged with stealing plums. "The way of the transgressor is hard," and they have early found it so. We hope it may prove a warning to them. We think it right to inflict punishment on boys for a crime like this, and hope that more examples be made, but plum thieves are not the only ones who should be dealt with-There are a number of boys about town who are continually in some kind of mischief-quarreling, fighting, throwing stones, &c-who deserve a few hours in the "Lock-Up," and we have the authority of our Constable for saying that he has eyes on some of them and will lock them up some day before they are aware of it. ------------------ Judge Taylor, of Huntingdon, has accepted the invitation of the Managers of Blair County Agricultural Society, to deliver an address on the occasion of the coming Fair--Those who know the man need not be told that it will be well worth listening to and to those who have not had the pleasure of hearing him, we can promise that it will be one replete with information. ------------------------------------------------ Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
