At the sale of Mrs. Belinda Stoner's effects, Union Bridge, last Thursday, a number of old books were offered. Of these, two ancient bibles were purchased by the auctioneer, George H. Eyler. They are leather bound volumes, with two clasps and in a good state of preservation. Both are in the German language from translations by Dr. Martin Luther. The older book was printed by Christian Sauer, Germantown, Pa., in 1776. The year made famous by the "Declaration of Independence" of the United States. C. Saur was the founder of the Publishing House of Christopher Sower & Co., which had a large exhibit at the Centennial, at Philadelphia, in 1876. Among the publications exhibited by them was the full issue of "The Genius of Liberty and Uniontown Adviser" published at Uniontown, Md., by Charles Sowers from 1812 until 1815 when the name of the paper was changed to the "Star of the Federation" and Mr. Sower removed it to Fredericktown where he continued in the printing business until 1821 in which year he died. The Saur bibles appears to have been the property of David Stoner, his name appearing on the blank leaf arranged for births, etc., with the names and date of birth of his children. The other bible is of later date, being printed in 1805, at Reading, Pa., by Gottlob Jungmann. There is no inscription to tell its owner.
