County News (cont.) Mr. Samuel Brubaker, of Fermanaugh township, Juniata county, was found dead in his wagon shed on Tuesday noon. When he went to his work in the morning he was apparently in good health. His wife went to the barn to look for him for dinner, when she discovered him laying on the ground in the wagon shed. He was about 40 years of age, and leaves a wife and two sons to mourn his sudden taking off. The Belleville correspondent of the Lewistown Gazette informs us that Harry Worley, while chopping wood struck one of his feet with the axe, making a four inch gash, extending through the foot. Also that Mrs. Sarah Byler is confined to her bed by injuries to her back sustained by a fall on the ice. John M. Ryder, a well known citizen of Gatesburg, Centre county, died some weeks ago in the 84th year of his age. He was the father of twelve children, eleven of whom are living. He had eighty-five grandchildren, sixty-five of whom are living, and thirty-one great-grandchildren, of whom twenty-six are living. A dwelling house occupied by Levi Dechert and located in the vicinity of Milroy, Mifflin county, was burned to the ground with part of its contents a few days ago. At the same time and near the same place, a house belonging to J. B. McNitt was discovered to be on fire, but it was not much damaged. The Bedford Gazette publishes their certificate of character: "One of the best known and most highly respected physicians in this county informs us that of all the towns in which he ever resided, and he has seen a good deal of the world, Bedford in the most immoral." Jerry Thompson, of Mount Union, while in the act of severing the jugular vein of a duck a few days ago, managed to sever the main artery of his left arm and would have bled to death had it not been for the prompt assistance rendered by a physician who happened to be by. ------------------- Blair County Court The January Term Now Being Held-Business of the First Day. The report of J. H. Craig, esq., auditor in the assigned estate of Simon Well was confirmed nisi. J. A. Doyle was appointed commissioner in the divorce case of Martha Black vs. Joseph Black. The sale of the real estate of Thomas B. Shaw, deceased, to J. D. Hicks, esq., for $860 was confirmed nisi. W. L. Pascoe, Esq., was appointed auditor to distribute the funds arising from the sheriff's sale of the personal property of A. L. Ritchey. Com. vs. Charles Chambers. Aggravated assault and battery in front of Arlington hotel, Altoona, on July 18, 1890; on Millard F. Bentley. District Attorney Bell and T. H. Greevy, esq., conducted the prosecution in this case and N. P. Mervine, esq., represented the defense. Messrs. James O'Neil, E. A. Pollet, Robert Shultz and Scott Williams gave their testimony for the prosecution. The Commonwealth's case closed just before the adjournment of the court. John Hunter and Jacob Ledley were discharged from imprisonment in the county jail under the Insolvent Laws. Com. vs. Charles Banner, fornication and bastardy, committed with Mrs. Kate Heinsman, in Altoona. The defendant pleaded guilty, and the usual sentence was imposed. Com. vs. Blair Brown, shooting at his father, Moses Brown, while intoxicated. The defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced to pay the costs of prosecution. On the request of the father, further sentence was deferred until the March term of Court. Com. vs. Charles Chambers, aggravated assault and battery, committed on the person of Millard F. Bentley, in front of the Arlington Hotel, Altoona, last July. Messrs. Lawrence McDonald, John Keyes and the defendant, Charles Chambers gave their testimony on the stand, in behalf of the defense. The gist of their evidence was that Bentley first struck Chambers with an umbrella, before he was assaulted and beaten. The jury brought in a verdict finding the defendant guilty of simple assault and battery. Com. vs. Blair Penlow. Damaging a building belonging to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Blair pleaded guilty and received his usual sentence of ninety days in jail. Com. vs. Sylvester Weth. Assault and battery, with intent to commit rape on Catharine Myers, in Altoona. A jury was sworn in this case, and it was in course of trial when court adjourned at noon. E. H. Flick, esq., is conducting the prosecution and A. V.
