    1. [PABLAIR-L] Altoona Mirror, 1895
    2. TYRONE Great guns, didn't she blow yesterday? The winds howled, and snow blew and the cold was intense, knocking the mercury down to eight degrees below the cipher mark, with the Tyrone weather prophet of the Tribune looking out through the roof of his sanctum sauctorium for old Mars, and the more bashful bride, Venice, to see whether there was any escape for us in the near future. He held out no hopes and I, knowing that he is a veritable Hicks and can discount the old weather gauge fifty per cent, only wished that I could retire to the shades of private life on the interest of about one million, where I could keep warm. No doubt there are many more just like me in that respect, but, just like me, they will never have their wishes gratified unless they should happen to strike a gold mine in their back yard. But it was cold and really dangerous for any person to be out in it for very long at a time. A teacher in one of the schools near Grazierville, who always walks every morning from Tyrone to the school, was knocked out yesterday morning and she was afraid to make the journey, but she was picked up by a shifting engine which had business up that way and was landed safely near the spot. She was thankful, but if she had given up the journey there wouldn't have been much lost, as she had few scholars in attendance, and these would have been much better off had they remained at home. Three more cases of measles reported to the health board yesterday. Andrew McCamant has been appointed by the United States Trust company examiner for Blair county. Conductor Isaac Berg walked four miles yesterday to Tyrone to report that his train had stuck and that he needed assistance. His brakeman accompanied him and both suffered considerable from the cold. The mails were all late yesterday. Few women were out on the streets yesterday and those who were compelled to be out needed sympathy and pity. Mrs. M. Willey is going to open a milliner store in the new Berlin block. Parents should not allow their children to attend school on Washington's birthday unless the sessions would be devoted exclusively to the memory of George Washington. Mr. Shirk is the school director who offered the motion not to recognize any school holiday from now until Decoration Day. Surely Decorations Day is not more sacred to the mind of the true American patriot than is the memory of Washington, who made it possible for us to have and enjoy Decoration Day. Shirk is the director who stuck to Pinkerton when the latter's naughty deeds were being shown up. But I am surprised at Stevens, Miller and Lowrie voting for the same. Surely there must be a mistake. --------------- DUNCANSVILLE Rev. A. A. Bunner, of the Church of Christ of Altoona, is holding meetings this week in Yingling's hall. How surprised one is when he reads in the Mirror that the Altoona school board has decided to close the schools for Washington's Birthday. Behind the times gentleman! We are surprised again at a correspondent's remarks when he censures the Tyrone board, in which he charges them with lack of patriotism for deciding not to close their schools on said day. All persons do not seem to be aware of the fact that Washington's birthday is kept by GOOD schools quite differently from what it used to be. Tyrone scribe should migrate to Altoona where he would likely find more congenial company. Rev. Owen James of Hollidaysburg will preach in Hess's hall tomorrow around 2 o'clock. A cordial invitation is extended to all. If we may judge by the appearance of snow on the steps and walk leading to the railroad station, a stranger coming to town might be led to suppose that all the boroughites had joined the Anti-industrial association. ----------------- Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair
