Donna GLANT Terrian, Apopka, FL [email protected] BLAIR COUNTY HISTORY, VOL. 2 - 61 HARRY LANG JOHNSTON has been managing editor of the Altoona Mirror for nearly a quarter of a century and has been identified with newspaper work since 1892. Born at Hollidaysburg, Pa., April 1, 1873, he is a son of William Noble and Laura (Lang) Johnston, both natives of the same place, the former having been associated with Hollidaysburg newspapers throughout his life. He obtained his education in the public schools and learned the trade of printer in the shop of the Democratic Standard, of Hollidaysburg. In 1892, he became a compositor with the Altoona Times, of which he was made city editor in 1893, a position which he retained until June, 1900. At that time, he became a reporter with the Altoona Mirror, was subsequently advanced to the city editorship, and was appointed managing editor in 1908. He has since occupied that position. He has served as president of the Pennsylvania State Editorial Association, since merged with the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers' Association. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and served as president of the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce in the same year. He attends the First Baptist Church. During the Spanish- American War, he served as regimental sergeant-major of the Fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Mr. Johnston married Annie Cherry Bunker, daughter of Benjamin M. and Louisa (Glant) Bunker, the former a building contractor of Altoona, and they have two children, Helen Louise, teacher of modern languages, McKeesport High School, and Anna Margaret, the latter of whom is the wife of Frederick B. Sheldon.
