Whilst proceeding along, a she bear, confronted him in his path, in a threatening manner, when young Moore turned upon it, and struck a blow with his axe, across the snoot, cutting it half way through, at the first blow- the bear being stunned, the boy soon killed it with other blows with his axe. He returned home, and informed his father of the fact, and the next day they proceeded to the spot, a very unfrequented place, and there, sure enough, was bruin, laying dead, from the wounds upon her, made by the courageous boy with his axe.
