    1. [PABLAIR] DEATHS BLAIR CO., PA 1876
    2. Deaths from The Register, Hollidaysburg, Blair Co., PA. HAGAR - Albert Hagar, of Johnstown, aged about fourteen years, in jumping off a moving freight train at that place on Friday, 10th instant., was thrown to the ground with such force as to fracture his skull. ALEXANDER - James Alexander "Old Uncle Jim" as he was familarly called, an old colored man, who for many years, has been one of the institutions of our town, died at the Alms House, on Saturday last. Jim was about half-witted and his queer fancies and comical notions, caused merriment many and many a time. every one knew him, from the smallest boy to the oldest inhabitant, and when they hear of his death many will sigh, and say "poor old man./" Wed. 29 March 1876 issue. DODSON- TERRIBLE ACCIDENT - An old man, named John Dodson, who for a long time has been an inmate of the Alms House, met with a terrible accident on Wednesday night of last week. It happened somewhat in this wise. He had come to town and was at the new patent coke ovens, of the Blair Iron & Coal Co., on the Gaysport shore of the river, and had gone to the top of them and had lain down on one of the large iron plates, which are made to open, so that the coal, can be dropped down into the ovens. When he first laid down the plates just comfortably warm, but as the coal below began to burn the plate grew hotter, and the gas ascending from the coal rendered the poor unfortunate unconscious, and the plates becoming red hot, he was frightfully burned. The way his situstion was discovered, a workman at the Big Furnace, on this side of the river, and some distance away from the coke ovens, smelled something burning and tracing it up, found it proceeded from some place near the patent ovens. He crossed the river, and wakened the man at that place (this was about half past ten o'clock, p.m.) and together they searched for the cause of the stench. Happening to pass the ovens they heard a groan, coming from the top of them. They immediately proceeded to the top and found the man and a great part of his flesh completely roasted. Dr. Geo. Snyder was summoned and did all he could to relieve the sufferer. He was conveyed to the Poor House, on Thursday, and died on Saturday. Wed. 5 April 1876 issue. MCFEATERS - Mrs. Nancy McFeaters, who was about seventy years of age, and resided in Blair county, was instantly killed a few days ago by falling from a wagon load of straw, while on her road to visit her daughter.---- Huntingdon Monitor. One of the feet of the unfortunate man caught in the stirrup, and he was dragged through the water for some distance, until drowned. Wed. 12 April 1876 issue. CAMPBELL - SHANNON - MILLER - WALTERS - On Friday morning week a locomotive exploded on the Tyrone and Clearfield railroad, near Sandy Ridge, killing Joseph Campbell, the engineer; John Shannon, the flagman, and William Miller, a brakeman, and badly scalding Harvey Walters, the fireman, who has since died. 1. [PABLAIR] Thoughts on Genealogy for a New Year
    2. Tomi Larson
    3. We Are The ChosenWe are the chosen. In each family there is one who seems called to find theancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tellthe family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathinglife into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Thosewho have gone before cry out to us, "Tell our story!" So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stoodbefore now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told theancestors, "You have a wonderful family; you would be proud of us." Howmany times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love therefor me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I dothe things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever toweeds and indifference and saying, "I can't let this happen." The boneshere are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing somethingabout it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish, how they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting theirhardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resolutenessto go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that the fathers fought and some died to make and keepus a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they weredoing it for us. It is of equal pride and love that our mothers struggledto give us birth. Without them we could not exist, and so we love each one,as far back as we can reach. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So.we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because weare they and they are the sum of who we are. So, as a scribe called, I tellthe story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generationto answer the call and take my place in the long line of familystorytellers. That is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young andold to step up and restore the memory or greet those whom we had never knownbefore. -Author Unknown _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. 1. [PABLAIR] Question abt St. Patrick's records
    2. I have a page from The Blair County Genealogical Society? "St. Patrick?s Church Records, Newry, PA, Volume 1 1828-1844, Volume 2 1845-1907".? I would like to obtain a copy of page 162 from that same publication.? Does anyone have a copy? & would it be possible to e-mail it to me? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lynda or Listers: A quick question. Do you know if these records are contained in the five volumes of Fr. LeDoux's? I have been told he compiled Catholic church records for central PA, and since I live in northeast Ohio, and am not familiar with central PA, am wondering if the records for St. Patrick's are in his volumes. Thank you for your time, and any help you can provide. Marybeth C.

    1. [PABLAIR] Age question
    2. Lona Boudreaux
    3. Hi, My paternal 2nd great grandparents were married Jan. 30, 1843 in Wales. I have a copy of their marriage certificate and under the column age they are both listed as "official age". Can any one tell me what the official age would be in Wales 1843? Or, where I can look? I've searched but either I'm not looking in the correct place or don't know how to look for this information. Merry Christmas to everyone. Lona Monroe, La. Advice would be more acceptable if it didn't always conflict with our plans.

    1. [PABLAIR] James Mattingly in Altoona Tribune 1874
    2. Lynda Snider
    3. Dear list members:   James E. Mattingly obit from the Altoona Tribune, Thursday, March 26, 1874.  This copy of an article was sent to me by Sharon Merritts of the Blair County Genealogical Society.   ---  James E. Mattingly, formerly foreman of the P. R. R. Company’s tin shop, died of consumption, yesterday about one o’clock, after a lingering illness.  His funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock from his late residence on Seventh avenue, between Twenty-second and Twenty-third streets.  The circumstances of the family are very distressing.  His wife is lying dangerously ill, also his sister—so ill that the attending physician will permit no one to be in either room.  There are six children left to mourn his loss.   In checking the dates, I wonder how this could be from a paper dated Thursday, March 26, 1874 (as reported to me) when he died on March 22?  Tuesday preceding date of the paper was March 24, making March 22 a Sunday.  Does anyone have access to copies of the Altoona Tribune from that time frame?  I’d like verification of the date of publication.   I’ve been searching for any information of his family (other than his wife and children) for quite a while.  The article mentions a sister who was “dangerously ill”.  What was her name?  He died of scarlet fever.  Was there an epidemic in Altoona at that time?  Could someone who has access to that paper check a few days after his death to see if there is any further mention of his sister?  His wife survived, as did his children.   Following are some biographical facts:   James Edward MATTINGLY was born 16 April 1832 in Fairfax County, Virginia and died 22 March 1874.  He is buried in Soldiers Circle, Fairview Cemetery, Altoona, PA.  He married Susanna HOWARD DOTZLER on 03 August 1854 in DC.  She was born 11 November 1831 in DC and died 15 October 1912.  She is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery as Susan VERMILLION (her third husband’s name) near her daughter, Nellie E. (Mattingly) TREESE and Mayberry TREESE. Thanks for any and all help I can get.  It's very much appreciated. LyndaLos Angeles

    1. [PABLAIR] End-of-Year Reminders and News
    2. Judy Banja
    3. 1. Blair County Genealogical Society http://www.bcgslibrary.org/ library is closed during the month of December. 2010 memberships are being processed by the volunteer staff, however, so please be kind and join the organization to support its continuation. BCGS has added benefits to membership. You can read about them in the September 2009 president's message here - http://www.bcgslibrary.org/pres-message.html The membership form is here - http://www.bcgslibrary.org/member_app.pdf 2. Blair County Historical Society http://www.blairhistory.org/ will be closed from December 24 through January 5. 2010. Membership renewals are due, and membership revenue is very much needed as the state is not giving grant money to historical societies. Their membership form is here - http://www.blairhistory.org/membership/graphics/bchsmemberapp.pdf I got a note last week from Gary Burkett at the Somerset County Historical Society asking me to post a message to our mailing list about this, too. He said, "Because of Pennsylvania's massive budget cuts the PHMC (Pennsylvania History and Museum Commission) has reduced staff at ALL sites across the state. The Somerset Historical & Genealogical Center now only has a state paid maintenance employee. The Somerset County Historical Society has hired a couple of the employees full or part time to keep the center open. But, and this is the reason for my email, we have been forced to cut the hours the center is open to the public. With the Christmas holiday fast approaching I wanted to alert the Genealogy Community that the Center is only open Tuesday - Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. There are NO weekend hours at this time. We plan to re-open on weekends in the spring." Blair County Historical Society operates all these sites - Baker Mansion, Royer Mansion, Dick Schoolhouse and Royer Mansion. Many of you are saying to yourself, "Why would I care?" but the fact is that because of the PHMC cuts, preservation of all PA county historical and genealogical societies has been jeopardized. BCHS is a county treasure-trove of bound newspapers, family bibles, photos, etc. What would happen if societies like these had to close their doors? The big genealogy subscription sites online certainly do not duplicate all the material they hold in their libraries. 3. I closed the Blair Photos group that had been migrated from MSN to Multiply when MSN discontinued all their groups. I found Multiply invasive (it's one of those social networking sites that wants to read your address book and upload the entire contents of your MyPictures folder). I started Blair Photos about 10 years ago as a sort of adjunct to BCGS, and on MSN, we had over 200 members, and over a hundred photo albums started and maintained by members. RootsWeb mailing lists are wonderful, but we can't attach photos or scans, or save them to the RootsWeb mailing list archives, so I started a Yahoo group for Blair County genealogy, similar to the one Ellis Michaels has for Clearfield. - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/clearfield-genealogy/ The url of the new Blair group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blair-pa-genealogy/ I hope all our old Blair Photos members from MSN will join the new group, and please consider this an invitation to all to join. Yahoo is NOT invasive, I promise. 4. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the folks who've transcribed Blair County material and donated it for use by researchers via Blair Archives and this mailing list. You're the folks who help make "online research" possible. THANK YOU. Happy holidays, Judy

    3. A Faithful Employe. John Montgomery has for the past twenty-three years been a faithful employe of the shops. He is as regular as clock work in ringing the bell for the workmen, and every morning at just seventeen minutes of six can be seen walking up town to the company's office to compare time. So promptly does he come to the minute that if the time was lost they could set it within a few seconds by his movements. Old Residenters. John Stanley yesterday brought to the TRIBUNE office for the reportorial eye to gaze upon, a rather remarkable pair of pantaloons. They were of Irish twilled linen, and made by the owner's mother-in-law, in the year 1828. They are in reasonably good repair and were worn by Mr. Stanley only about two weeks since. What is stranger still is that they are in the prevailing fashion. A Cave. In the city stone quarry is located quite a cave, which is frequented more by the small boys than any one else; but it is quite interesting and contains several pretty minerals. It is entered through an angular hole and is about twenty feet deep and as large as a small room. From this two branches lead off. On one side the water has flowed down through the limestone rock and encrusted the face of it with a very pretty stalactite formation. When broken off this looks to be crystallized and appears much like maple sugar. These stones, if they could be removed, would make beautiful rockeries. They cover one side of the cave like a curtain, and where not broken look like a beautiful ruffled screen. The Good Will Engine. The Good Will steam fire engine is again in first-rate order. It has had new flues put in it and together with the hose carriage has received a handsome coat of paint. On next Saturday they will give it a public trial. The company is determined to get into first-class order, and has appointed James T. Dougherty and Augustus Clemens to buy a fine pair of horses for company use. The first engineer of the organization is William Enny; second engineer, James T. Dougherty, a locomotive engineer; third engineer, Ed. Gardner, and first fireman James Lafferty. Quite a number of the old members are moving back into town and rejoining the company, which is in a flourishing condition. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, April 13, 1880
