Hi Donna, I do not have very much information on McLain/McClain beyond my link to George Wesley McClain, and very little on the branches. I've looked at my records, and I don't find any Curtin Emanuel McClain, but I do have a Clinton E McClain. Clinton's father is George and Amalia. Could this be the person you are looking for? In the 1910 Census on April 27, in Blair County, Duncansville Borough (ED76) McClain Wesley head 69 Amalia I. Wife 48 Clinton E. Son 16 Mary M. Daughter 13 Mildred H. Daughter 8 Hoover, Neff O Stepson 22 In the 1900 Census on June 5th in Blair County, Allegheny Township, Duncunsville Borough (ED73) McClain, George head unreadable Amalia Wife " Emory?? Son " Mary M. Daughter " Hoover, Neff Stepson " My father has told us stories of a half-brother of his Dad who was named Clinton and must have known him because he also referred to him as Uncle Clint. From the stories, I got a sense that David McLain did not seem to get along well with his father and his family. It seems he was raised and had much affection for William and Gertrude Garland (brother and sister). There are a lot of references in family history about "Aunt Gertie". Gertrude never married, but William did but eventually was left a widower and lived with his sister. Clinton also appears to be the black sheep in the family as my father has related knowledge about Clinton having beat one of his sons to death. My father appeared to be very much affected by this and gave that as a primary reason why he never (ok, maybe once) spanked us or physically punished us. Maybe he thought it could run in families. The name McClain appears in several censuses and George seems to always be listed that way. David's military records clearly list him as David R McLain, which is the name we go by now. Whether this difference in spelling is only phonetic (we pronounce our name as "Mcclain" and many people mispell it as such), or if it is indeed official. The census enumerators would write down the name they "heard" and that could be the reason for the difference in spelling. On the other hand, my father often mentioned that the McLain name was changed due to a family feud, but I always assumed that was farther back in the past. It could also have been changed by David because of some feud he had with his father. I hope this information has been a help for you. I don't know how much more I can share as I dont have much information before George. I would be interested in the census indexes for 1860 and 1870 for McClain/McLain. If this info has helped you, I can try to come up with more data and information about George McClain. Just let me know. William > > HI... Hi List, In going through some things of my grandmothers that my cousin sent, I found an "In Memory Card" of Ella Grace Fry. Her date of birth was July 15, 1917. Date of death Aug. 13, 1979. The funeral was at Friedline Funeral Home Aug. 16, 1979 at 11 a.m. Interment at Royer Cemetery, Williamsburg RD,Pa. There are some Fry's in my line, but have not heard of Ella. Is there anyone who can shed some light on this? Thanks, Maxine
Hello List, I am interested in Cemetery/Burial records of Family buried in St. Patrick's-Gallitzin - early 1900's. I have only the years and not actual death dates. Does anyone know exactly who would be holding the records? Or -- Does anyone know of a contact I could make who would 'look-up' the records? Thank you for any information. Piketre@aol.com

Hi all, I've been trying to trace my roots on my father's side. I have been having trouble tracking down information on his father's youth. One of the problems has been the 1890 Census gap. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Here is what I know. My grandfather's name was David Roswell McLain, born in Tyrone on or about April 25, 1876. His father's name was George Wesley McLain (McClain) His mother's name was Emma Retta Garland I found them on the 1880 census, in Tyrone. David's father listed his occupation as Locomotive Engineer. David McLain enlisted in the Army on July 30, 1895 at York, Pennsyvania 1900 Census has David McLain living in Tyrone, in a boarding house and working as a Telegraph operator. Family stories include a half-brother of David, named Clint. Recently I obtained an old note book that belonged to my grandmother (David's spouse). In it, was a birth date for an Amalia McLain. 1910 Census Lists George Wesley, wife Amalia, daughter Mary M, son Clinton E, daughter Mildred H. living in Duncansville Borough. 1920 Census Lists Amalia McLain (McClain), son-in-law Raymond Miller, and daughter Hazel (?) living in Duncansville Borough. David's mother, Emma Retta Garland had at least two siblings by family stories, William Garland, and Gertrude Garland. Their father was David Garland Their mother was Susanna Woomer The Garlands appear to have been stable as I can find them in subsequent census (1900, 1910, 1920, 1930). It appears in the early census, there were more children other than Emma, William and Gertrude. I am trying to piece together any information on both these families from about 1880 through 1930. If anyone can help me with this, I sure would appreciate it. If any of this information is useful to anyone, please contact me for what I have. Grace Honor Calhoun of Allport PA was supposedly wed 3 times. She was placed in the Soldiers Orphan School system in 1898 after the death of her mother in Nov. 1897. The first husband is unknown and there may have been a child born to this union who died in a fire. My mom's birth certificate indicates Grace had a child prior to Mom's birth in 1918 who was born alive but was now deceased, and Mother seemed to remember hearing about the girl and the fire. Grace's second husband was David Clapper Frederick of Altoona, they were wed prior to 1918 when their daughter Mildred (my Mom) was born. The only marriage I have proof of is her third to Howard Cloyd Gibson on December 11, 1933. They were wed by the clerk of the Orphan Court in Philadelphia Co, PA certificate # 630832, 2 1/2 months after the death of DC Frederick, who had disappeared in 1922 after the birth of his and Grace's son Richard. Is there anyone out there who can tell me where to go to find this info, or how ! to contact the clerk of the Orphan's Court for a check of their records. Michele Gibson-Pierson

One of our long time list members, Ron Weaver, passed away on Monday. I knew Ron and his family personally, he was a wonderful, kind, sharing person. Ann Denson, another list member, recently sent me the poem "The Dash Between the Years" and Ron certainly made his 'dash' meaningful. Ron's funeral will be tomorrow, in Saxton. Hello from London to all my Blair County Buddies. I need help with the William and Katherine (Hampshire) Davis family who, according to the 1880 Census, lived in West Martinsburg, Blair County. William was a house carpenter and 38 years old (indicating a birth date of about 1842) and had been born in Pennsylvania of parents both born in Pennsylvania. His wife, Kate, keeping house, was listed as 35 years old (indicating a birth date of about 1845) and had also been born in Pennsylvania of parents both born in Pennsylvania. William and Kate had four daughters (Minnie, Carrie, Ida, and Ella) and a son (Clarence). Minnie Davis was born 20 August 1861-1871 (the Census lists her as 19, which is possible, as her parents were 38 and 35 but the ages of the next children were 8, 6, 4, and 2 so she may have been 9 rather than 19). She married Edgar Warren Bowers 29 January 1896 in Roaring Spring. They had four children together - Floyd, Ray, William and Frank Bowers. She died 15 February 1905. I've just heard a family story, though, that says Minnie died giving birth to twins. According to the story, one of the twins also died and the other, a boy named Mahlon, was adopted by a family named Snyder. I would greatly like to discover 1) if this story about the twins is true and 2) the origins of William Davis and Katherine Hampshire. Can anyone shed some light on this family or suggest "places" to check? Thank you, Deborah Hainley Bonnar dahbonnar@aol.com London, England
Help! William Weir lived in Blair Co. PA in the 1900 census. Are there any records of him anywhere after that? He had a new wife and baby, as well as his 2 daughters who'd come from Scotland with him and 5 Keiper step-children, one named Goswin. There were Keiper children in the Soldiers Orphans Schools whose father's name was Gaswin/Goswin. Were they related to my Keipers? Does this sound familiar to anyone? Michele in Michigan
I too would be interested in any information on St Matthew's history, and how to obtain records, as my ancestors were members of St Matthew's. I do believe that Oak Grove Cemetery is associated with St Matthew's.
