New Year Accidents Aged Man Struck by a Train and Seriously Injured. Marko Nicolege, of Water street, Huntingdon, was brought to the hospital this morning, suffering from a fracture of the right leg and lacerations of the scalp. Nicolege had occasion to cross the railroad tracks and in doing so was struck by an engine and hurled from the tracks. His condition, while thought to be serious, is not necessarily fatal. Patrolman Peter Harlow this morning brought a sick Slav to the Altoona hospital. the man approached him on the east side of town, bearing a note stating he was ill and needed medical attention. He was admitted for treatment. Carl Stambaugh, 65 years of age, residing on Sixth avenue, near Twenty-first street, was seriously injured at 8:00 this morning, on the Hollidaysburg branch railroad, just opposite JK office. Two engines were standing on the south track and Stambaugh passed in front of them on to the north track, directly in front of a passenger train bound for Hollidaysburg. He was knocked to the side of the track and received fractures of several ribs on the right side and severe contusions of the abdomen. He was removed to the hospital and admitted for treatment. His condition is serious. Mrs. May Oefflinger, aged 79 years, mother of Mrs. H. Grosse, of 521 Third avenue, with whom she makes her home, fell down a flight of steps yesterday morning, receiving numerous bruises of the head and body. Her chin and face were also cut and it is feared she was injured internally. On account of her advanced age, her injuries may result fatally. Miss Annie Nolan, of Twenty-fourth street, and Oak avenue, fell on the icy pavement while on her way to church on Sunday and fractured her left arm above the wrist. Dr. Davis A. Hogue rendered the necessary medical attention. A young son of Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Yon, while playing with the wringer attached to a wash tub yesterday, had his finger, upon which was a ring, badly squeezed. The ring had to be cut in two to alleviate the pain. Dr. Davis A. Hogue dressed the hand. Leroy Nycum, of Ray's Hill, while wrestling, broke his left arm. The fracture was reduced at the hospital. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- New Year Eve Events 1904, Ushered in With Noisy Demonstrations and the Holding of Receptions and Watch Meetings. The year 1904 was ushered in with all the demonstrations which generally make such an event. The loud blowing of whistles and the ringing of bells, together with the occasional shots and other noises gave evidence of the dying of the old and the birth of the new year. Many enjoyable receptions and watch meetings were held. The Eagles watched the old year out and the new one in at their nest in the Mateer building. Supper was indulged as an introduction of the new year. Last night the ladies' auxiliary to the Mountain commandery of the Free and Accepted Masons held a New Year's reception in the Masonic temple. A delightful musical and dancing program was enjoyed. A full orchestra furnished the music. The reception was a success in every particular. The Belvidere Social club held a New Year's dance in their rooms last night. It was a success, as is usual with Belvidere receptions. The annual New Year's celebration of the Froshinn society was held in the hall last night, on Ninth avenue. Dancing was the feature of the evening. Amusements and luncheon of an extensive nature was served. A unique scene was presented last evening in the upper vise and machine shops and also in the Juniata shops, to celebrate the last working hours of 1903. Chisels, hammers and other implements were brought into play and just before the whistles blew to cease work, the merry ringing of the tools sounded the death knell of the old year. Last night, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. McFarland celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of their married life at their cosy home, 1510 Second street. Fifty people were present from Bellwood, Tyrone, Coalport and this city. Among those were Mr. William Geesey, who is 74 years old and father of Mrs. McFarland, and four generations were represented. Dr. J. H. Mathers, who married them, and wife, were taken care of by the genial host and hostess. A great variety of silver presents were left by the guests, who were entertained in a musical and social manner, after which all refreshed themselves by a sumptuous supper. All wished the couple a happy future. Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

These Banks are all under the supervision and control of the "Buffalo kiters" who wanted to secure the Central Bank of Hollidaysburg, consequently their notes should be regarded with suspicion. The safest plan to guard against loss at the hands of these "kiters' is to refuse all notes on their pet swindling institutions. -------------- Man Frozen A man named Walter, aged about 55 years, was frozen to death in Greenfield township on Tuesday night of last week, whilst attempting to go from Claysburg to his home, about three miles distant. When his body was found on the Friday following, a flask partly filled with whiskey was in one of his pockets, of which it is supposed, he had partaken and was overcome. His sudden death is mourned by a large circle of respectable connections and friends.-Hol. Register. ---------------- Mail Messenger Mr. Wm. The loser can have it by proving property, paying for this notice, and taking it away, otherwise it will be disposed of according to law. ------------------------------ Police Notes Railroad Officer Corkle arrested a drunk and disorderly character Wednesday night who clawed and scratched like a cat and who had to be conveyed to the bastile in a cart. The Mayor fined the fellow $6.80. He departed for Tyrone on Day Express yesterday in almost as drunk a condition as when he arrested. About 12 o'clock last night a county constable arrived in the city, having in custody five tramps. He had caught the roadsters in a schoolhouse somewhere between this city and Blair Furnace, they having taken full possession of the seat of learning and its contents. When surprised by the officer they were toasting their shins about a fire made of school books, rulers, or whatever else of an inflammable nature they could lay hands upon. They were locked up to await a hearing to-day. -------------------------- A Young Girl's Leg Amputated About six months ago, Susie, the 14 year-old daughter of Mr. Joseph Biller, of Allegheny township, Cambria county, injured her left leg. The would did not heal property and resulted in caries. Lately the girl's conditions was of so serious a nature that Dr. Buck, the attending physician, decided that amputation was the only means of saving her life. The operation was performed by Dr. Buck at Mr. Biller's home yesterday, the leg being amputated midway between ankle and knee. At present writing the patient is doing as well as could be expected. ------------------ Death of Father Bowen Rev. Father H. S. Citizens' Engine and Hose Company The zeal with which the members of this company have entered into the spirit of their work, deserves success, and if we do not have a good fire company and a good engine, it will not be the fault of those engaged in the work, but may be attributed to the short -sightedness of the property-holders of the town. The Committee appointed by the company to receive subscriptions and money for the purpose of purchasing an engine and a quantity of hose, desire that all subscribers should pay up to previous to the 12th of September, and we sincerely hope the response will be instantaneous and liberal. It seems to us useless that we should here recount the advantages of having a good fire engine and company in this place, as we presume all are aware of them; therefore we will only add that now is the time to aid in securing what the nature of the buildings and good sense of the people tell them that the town demands, via: a means of protection against fire. --------------------------- Child Drowned On Friday afternoon last, a little boy, aged about two years, son of John Welsh, living on Branch street, East Altoona, wandered out of the house, while his mother was doing something up stairs, and went to a well in the yard, on which there was a loose board. As soon as the mother came down stairs and missed the child she made search for him, and discovered that the well-board had been shifted she rushed to the spot, only to find her fears realized. The child had fallen in and was drowned. The water being near the top of the well she reached in and pulled him out and gave the alarm to neighbors, a number of whom came in immediately and endeavored to resuscitate the child, but it was too late--the vital spark had fled. Mr. Welsh is a brakeman on one of the freight trains on the Penn'a Railroad and was from home at the time. An inquest was held by Coroner Fox and a verdict in accordance with the above was returned. ----------------------------------------- Married On the 20th ult., at the Lutheran Parsonage, by Rev. J. R. ---------------------------- It is seldom that a drunk man is seen in our streets, consequently the boys consider it almost a treat to come across some unfortunate individual who has imbibed sufficiently to bring him within their reach of torment. Passing up the street the other evening, we observed quite a crowd collected in the neighborhood of the R. R. ticket office, in the center of which was a wretched looking being who had taken on such a heavy load of tangle-foot whiskey that he could not navigate, and the boys were enjoying the delectable sport of letting him "drap" heavily on his posterior at every opportunity. It was no doubt fun for the boys, but hard on the dilapidated individual's corduroys. Seriously, we could not but think that boys who would thus impose on an unfortunate man were as much deserving of a place in the "Lock-Up" as he whom they tormented. ---------------------- Tobacco For Boys A strong writer administers a wholesome dose to the boy chewers and smokers assuring them that tobacco has spoiled and utterly ruined thousands of boys, inducing a dangerous precocity, developing the passions, softening and weakening the bones, and greatly injuring the spinal marrow, the brain, and the whole nervous fluid. A boy who early and frequently smokes, or in any way uses large quantities of tobacco, never is known to make a man of much energy of character, and generally lacks physical and muscular, as well as mental energy. We would particularly warn boys who want to be anybody in the world, to shun tobacco as a most baneful poison. ----------------------- Camp Meeting The colored folks of this county will hold a Camp Meeting near Brush Run, a short distance from Hollidaysburg, commencing to-morrow (Friday). It will no doubt be well attended by whites as well as blacks. We have been requested to state that Geo. McCabe will be on hand with his omnibus to run between this place and the camp during its continuance. ------------------ Visited Us. We acknowledge a visit from our respected contemporary of the Blairsville Records, James F. Campbell, Esq., who dropped into our sanctum on Saturday last. James is a clever fellow, prints a good paper, and we hope makes plenty of money. Company G. Bugler is Wounded in 4 Places Gassed in action "over there" and wounded in four places, Ralph H. DeAngelis, bugler in Company G., the Blair Union in the 110th regiment, "somewhere in France," is still smiling and cheerful, according to a letter just received from his parents, Louis and Jane DeAngelis of 509 Third Avenue. Ralph enclosed in the recent letter a souvenir from the battlefield, which includes the envelope and paper such as is used by the boches in writing field letters. The envelope is printed in German. The Altoona soldier appropriated the Hun stationery in communicating with the home folks. The soldier's wounds are to the legs and arms and he states that he able to be about now and that he visited in Aix les-Bains, the prettiest part of France, and that he slept in one of the famed hotels. A ring, given the soldier by his mother when he was home on a furlough from the Georgia camp last year, was destroyed in the Altoonan's fight against the Huns, Ralph writing that the ring was broken when going "over the top," the Huns breaking his gun, making it necessary for him to use his fists. He also writes the father for a new razor, the old shaving outfit being unfit for use as a result of Hun bullets striking him, one finding its way to the shaving kit. Ralph, who is aged 21, formerly worked in the Fourth Street blacksmith shop. He enlisted July 14, 1917. *I scanned a photo of Ralph DeAngelis from this article, email if you want a copy. -------------------------------- Ray A. Smith Recovers From Wound in Action Juniata Youth is Member of Company G, 110th Regiment in France Sergeant Ray A. Smith, aged 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Smith of 804 Seventh Avenue, Juniata, is recovering in a base hospital in France after being slightly wounded in action, the young man being a member of Company G., 110th infantry. Prior to his entry into the army he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad company. His wound was not a serious one, the soldier being struck in the thigh by a piece of shrapnel. *photo scan available --------------------------------------------- Hurry Examination of Registered Men Registrants of the Sept. 12 registration were qualified for general military service at the examinations held yesterday by the West side, No. 1, city draft board and the Tyrone, No. 2, county draft board. Cherry, Esq., of Altoona, Mr. GEORGE SHARRAH of Huntingdon Co., to Miss REBECCA KEES of Pinegrove, Centre Co. ---------------------------------------- Died On the 21st ult., near Rifflin, Seneca Co., Ohio, Mr. Michael Erhart, Sr., formerly of this place, aged about 65 years. In Logan township, on the 30th ult., Mrs. MARY ANN, wife of Wm. Black, aged 52 years, 10 months and 12 days. -------------------------- Estray-Came to the residence of the subscriber, in Logan township, on or about the 4th of July last, a RED AND WHITE HEIFER, supposed to be three years old, with the left ear cropped and a broad white stripe down the face. The owner is requested to come forward, prove property, pay charges and take her away, otherwise she will be disposed of according to law. Jonathan Hamilton. ----------------------------------------- House and Lot For Sale The subscriber offers for sale a HOUSE & LOT, situate in Loudonsville, adjoining Altoona, two doors from the main track of the Penn'a Rail Road. The lot is 50 feet front and 160 feet deep. The House is a good two-story frame building with all necessary outbuildings. A bargain may be had in this property as the owner is desirous of removing from the place. Possession given at any time. TERMS: One-third of the purchase money to be paid in hand. A title clear of all encumbrances will be given. Persons wishing to view the premises will call on the subscriber residing thereon. Jas. T. Moore -------------------------------------------- Contempt of Court A man named Meloy, who was an important witness for the Commonwealth in several liquor cases which came up at the last Court in this county, but who was non est when his name was called, was brought up at the adjourned Court on the 24th ult., on attachment, and fined $20 and costs, and ordered into the custody of the sheriff until the sentence be complied with. The Judge intimated that his straightened circumstance has this time secured him a moderate punishment, but that a fine of three times that amount would be imposed in like cases in future. The Pittsburgh Chronicle in remarking on this case says:--"Judge Taylor is not a man to be trifled with, and if there were more courts like his in the State, there would be fewer rascals." ----------------------------------- Boys in the "Lock-Up" Two small boys, whose names we did not learn, were placed in the "Lock-Up" on Tuesday morning last, charged with stealing plums. "The way of the transgressor is hard," and they have early found it so. We hope it may prove a warning to them. We think it right to inflict punishment on boys for a crime like this, and hope that more examples be made, but plum thieves are not the only ones who should be dealt with-There are a number of boys about town who are continually in some kind of mischief-quarreling, fighting, throwing stones, &c-who deserve a few hours in the "Lock-Up," and we have the authority of our Constable for saying that he has eyes on some of them and will lock them up some day before they are aware of it. ------------------ Judge Taylor, of Huntingdon, has accepted the invitation of the Managers of Blair County Agricultural Society, to deliver an address on the occasion of the coming Fair--Those who know the man need not be told that it will be well worth listening to and to those who have not had the pleasure of hearing him, we can promise that it will be one replete with information. ------------------------------------------------ Annie Whiteman PABlair Rootsweb List Administrator Annie Whiteman/Steve Patz Blair County Coordinators http://www.rootsweb.com/~pablair

Business Changes- Mr. R. S. Gamble, the successful and reliable Eleventh avenue merchant, has branched off in his business connections, having purchased the grocery store of Morrison, Bare & Co., Roaring Springs, this county. He will take possession on the first of July next, and will run both the main store and branches with the same energy and business correctness that have heretofore characterized his operations. We wish him success both in the new and old fields of enterprise. --------------------- An Omission- In our notice of the Silver Jubilee of Father Tuigg, last week, we unintentionally omitted from the musical part of the programme a very delectable instrumental trio, "West-End Polka," performed by Misses Annie V. Carr, Ellie Haas and Nettie Plack. We cheerfully make the correction as a just tribute to the young ladies who participated in the trio. ---------------- Valuable Mare Dead- A valuable mare belonging to W. Lee Woodcock, Esq., of this city, died one night last week very suddenly from some unknown cause. She was in charge of Mr. Samuel Orr, at Allegheny Furnace at the time, and the loss is a deplorable and heavy one, as Mr. W. would not have taken $500 for the animal. -------------- A Hollidaysburg Old Timer- Every resident of Hollidaysburgh of Thirty-five years ago will remember a man familiarly known as Rob Lowry-a genial whole souled fellow, brimful of humor and business vim. He was a passenger conductor on the old Portage railroad in 1837-9; afterward kept a hotel at the foot of Plane No. 2, and in 1844 removed to Davenport, Iowa, where he took charge of the first class hotel in the town, and where he did a thriving business and amassed considerable property. Subsequently he was elected to the State Legislature and the State Senate. At the session of the Centennial Commission, held at the Continental Hotel, Philadelphia, last week, Mr. Lowry was chosen one of the Vice Presidents of the Commission and many of his old friends who worked on the old Portage with him nearly forty years ago will be pleased to learn this fact. He was young man at the time he acted in the capacity of conductor on this road and many of his old friends and cronies are still living in this county who kindly remember him. ------------------------------ Plenty of It- On Saturday afternoon we counted no less than twelve games of baseball in progress at the same time. The players were gamins of all the tender years verging on incipient manhood, with occasionally a more advanced specimen who boasted a profusion of silky down on lip and chin, and who strutted in conscious superiority accordingly. There was no aristocracy, however, among the more tender aged juveniles-if any, it was the rank of superiority in the play; in all else the youth of whole breeches and well washed face and groomed hair was no more than the equal of the gamin whose unmentionables wore baywindows in the stern through which soiled linen peeped defiantly out, and whose faces and hands were as much strangers to soap and water as their hair was unkempt. The national game is at least a social leveler, and those who would wear its honors and pleasures must also tolerate its social ignorings. ------------------------ Married- At the Eighth avenue M. E. Church, on Thursday evening, the 20th inst., Mr. John Grove and Miss Rebecca M. Lewis, both of this city. The officiating clergyman was the pastor, Rev. S. C. Swallow, pastor of the church. ---------------------- Runaway Apprentice- A lad named John Wicker, aged about thirteen yeas, bound to the undersigned as an apprentice to the farming business, on the Charles Mason farm near Duncanville, having absconded. I will pay the customary reward of six cents for his return. John Forsht ------------------------------ Died Colyer- In this city on the 2d inst., Howard Livingston Colyer, son of J. W. and M. E. Colyer, aged 18 months and 3 days. Leckie- In this city, on the 7th inst., Edwin R. S., son of Rev. J. W. and E. S. Leckie, in the 3rd year of his age. --------------- Married- ZOLLINGER-HAUSFIELD On the 4th inst., by Rev. A. C. Whitmer, Mr. Charles E. Zollinger to Miss Catharine Hausfield, both of this city. MILLER-GREEN May 23, at the First M. E. Parsonage by Rev. James Carns, Mr. James G. Miller and Miss Rachel Green, both of this city. HOLSINGER-STREIGHT At the Delta House, June 1, by the same, Mr. John R. Holsinger and Miss Essie A. Streight, both of Bedford county. MCDONALD-CURRY At the residence of G. W. Anderson, June 7, by the same, Mr. Edward McDonald and Mrs. Margaret M. Curry, both of Osceola, Pa.
